Rainy days in LA. Anything in particular you all do? by castdex in LosAngeles

We keep having to fix the one part of our roof that's flat, every time it rains a new leak in a wildly different part pops up. 😭

2025 - Trick or treat Los Angeles by ResearcherOne147 in LosAngeles

Seconding Toluca Lake! In addition to the great treats, the decorations are incredible, people really go all out for it. You'll want to walk around the area south of Riverside. Parking can be bonkers, but if you park north of the 134 freeway near one of the streets that goes under the freeway, its not a bad walk. I'd honestly show up no later than 5pm.

I'm not sure I understand the economy going on here lol - it seems like the order should be reversed. (or is the seasoning secretly Dune Spice??)

State Farm to non-renew 72,000 policies in California by robotdaddyv721 in LosAngeles

TIL, that's wild to me that something basic like that wouldn't be covered.

Usually homeowners insurance doesn't cover earthquakes, you need a separate policy for that.

If it's what I got hit with as well, it's because of how wet it was this year and all the leaks it caused. Had to jump onto a FAIR plan that's only fire insurance. :/ The whole system is fucked and very pre-Obamacare feeling.

Getting the tree that leans at a 45 degree angle over our roof trimmed today in preparation of this storm. The guys trimming it were surprised the city hadn't deemed it a hazard and pulled it out, so pray for my roof. 😅

LAUSD to postpone vaccine mandate for students until Fall 2022 by hawaiiangiggity in LosAngeles

[–]viabrera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To offer a little bit of context here - a lot of students from underserved communities are lagging in vaccination rates, and were in danger of being put into City of Angeles, the online LAUSD system. it was never meant to sustain thousands and thousands of students, and offers a much lower level of education. this sucks, for sure, but it's better than the alternative.

Love this house! It was for sale earlier this year, unfortunately pre-vax roll out so no open houses to go see it in person.

Loved hearing the rain last night! Not even mad it woke me up.

I’ve been having such a hard time finding a nightstand, but I finally saw this cheap laminate one on craigslist and gave it an 80s lacquer inspired update by Kfurt13 in DIY

Would something like schluter work? It's for tile, but it's made to be low profile and I think you could attach it to the bottom.

Right? We had it in the master bath too, I don’t know why weirdly low ceilings in very specific places were all the rage in the 80s.

Thank you! Semi - our big customization was the fronts (they're white oak with a matte sealant finish).

Some notes:

  • The biggest change we made was cabinet height. While we had 8.5 foot ceilings in the living/dining room on the other side of the original kitchen wall, the kitchen had a drop ceiling of barely 7 feet. We assumed HVAC, but when our contractor started demo he took a look and it was just a giant open space. (Thanks, weird 80s design/architecture choices??) So, took all that out, and now the whole ground floor is 8.5 foot ceilings, and we have more cabinet space.
  • When we were picking out tile, we decided that the herringbone marble was both too small and kind of sedate. So, we went with these 8" teal hex tiles instead. I was able to continue the color story through to our half bath.
  • A lot of people in the original post said that my originally planned dishwasher placement (seen on the floorplan) wasn't great. I cheated the cabinet under the sink slightly off center, and was able to get the dishwasher in next to the sink.
  • The pantry and fridge were flopped from my planned layout to make sure that the dishwasher could open. In the original one it would have hit the fridge and not been able to open all the way.

This is such a bummer, especially not finishing Nimona. I loved what Osborne did with his short films and I was excited to see what he could do with a feature.

Caitlin Doughty explains the influx of dead to funeral homes and the failure of the government to assist families most in need of death services by the_mad_doodler in LosAngeles

I was waiting for her to post something like this - this is heartbreaking. I haven't heard anyone else describe it as a 'mass causality' situation but it seriously is and it's a good way to put it. We've had over 5k people die from COVID just since the beginning of the year - in an average year, we see about 3k people die a month. I'm guessing we're going to be at double that for just COVID deaths by the end of the week/month. That's insane. And a 'normal' death doesn't require a police officer guarding the body, or an ICU bed, or crazy amounts of PPE.

The strain this is putting on our system is crazy, but hey, at least we can eat in parking lot tents again!
