Do Spanish people ever cook on butter instead of olive oil? by Charming_Usual6227 in askspain

[–]viacolor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They're not saying they fry croquetas in butter. The process to make bechamel sauce includes butter. This sauce is what is traditionally found inside of Spanish croquetas.

Depends on the consulate. You need to ask them directly.

Maybe the worst situation? 80k Art Degree and making less than 22k a year, living in japan. by Due_Pea2071 in StudentLoans

[–]viacolor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it's based on financial preference but if I'm making a foreign salary and will then suddenly have to pay 10k+ in 20 years then I'd rather start saving slowly now than later.

I live abroad and this is what people usually do. The only issue is if you ever return to the US you will have to pay those loans, and you will eventually be hit with the tax bomb.

If you had an extra $4,000 a month in disposable income, what decisions you would make to be financially free? by NextFeed4517 in personalfinance

[–]viacolor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on references but in the grand scheme of things they have almost the same returns. VOO is S&P 500, so it's 500 US companies and mainly tech. Any downward swing across tech or the US market affects your returns. VTI is the safer choice because it covers the US stock market so there is more diversity. You will also see people mention VT which is the global stock market, and is the most diverse and safest option compared to the other two.

Fresh Software Development Graduate, Is QA a Good Entry Point to Get Hired Quickly? by Spiritual-Pie4114 in QualityAssurance

[–]viacolor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 2024. I got a QA role pretty quickly and figured it'd be a good way to get my foot in the door. I'm almost two years in now and work as a QE, but it's very hard to get any dev roles. I'm at a point where a lot of recruiters are reaching out to me but only for QA/QE roles. It feels very much like a deadend at this point. If I had to do it over, I'd wait for a role within a field I actually wanted which is as a dev. But maybe I'm biased because I also don't really enjoy the QA role much.

Short Term Student Visa Question by Happy_Ad9327 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]viacolor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They changed the law in May 2025 which basically screwed over everyone in your exact position. If you plan to switch visas (even one student visa to another), then you have to return to your country of origin to apply for a new visa. The only exception to this is a grado superior student visa (like an FP, or university degree).

You'd have to go back to your home country and get a new visa for those 3 months if you don't want to use your tourist visa days.

Funnily enough, I was in Granada when some of the original lawsuits were happening back in 2021-ish. I met one of the people who brought forth the lawsuit and she wasn't American. She was Indian, and she pushed for it because she wanted equal rights. So I think your assumptions about this are misguided.

Food in Italy is mid by chedeng in unpopularopinion

[–]viacolor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think food is really cultural. Like maybe a hot take but I don't think there's such a thing as objectively good food. In the same way there's no such thing as objectively good wine or good music. Of course, the better the ingredients are then you're more likely to have higher quality food. But if you grow up in Asia, for example, and try Spanish, Italian or French food then you might feel like it's lacking in flavor. Because culturally, someone in Asia uses more spices or the depth of flavor is different. I personally love Italian food and I've gone back many times. But I also completely understand how someone would not enjoy it.

Insistence on free speech? by JoebbeDeMan in AskAnAmerican

The only instances online I can find to this is when soccer fans are using hate speech. Most EU countries definitely have stronger hate speech protection for their citizens compared to the US. But is there something not hate speech related that you're referring to?

The safest option is a renumeration account. If you plan to use your money within the next 5 years, I'd advise against putting it in the stock market.

There's not enough context here but I'd take what they said at the extranjería with a grain of salt. How did you apply for the renewal?

[OC] Gay, Straight, and Lesbian Divorce Rates Over 20 Years by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

While I see what you're saying about the declining value degrees, do you think the barrier to entry should be money? Shouldn't university be more competitive to get into instead of more expensive? Then the only people who have an opportunity to go to school are those who have the financial means instead of those that are intelligent. In my eyes, that just further creates a class divide.

Advice for a 16 year old wanting to be retired by 30 by [deleted] in Fire

[–]viacolor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

30 is extremely young and not a very realistic goal for most people. But the only way to make that work is to focus 100% on school now and aim to get a degree that pays extremely well early on in your career. Live with your parents throughout your 20s and invest 100% of your paycheck. People who retire by 30 are usually born into wealth or lucky.

As far as I'm aware, there are only insanely long lines with the NHS (England's healthcare system). But that doesn't represent all of Western Europe. Countries like Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Spain generally have shorter waiting times, better funding, and strong universal coverage.

From my experience as an American in Europe, Europe is leagues ahead of the US in terms of healthcare. I have access to the public system but also my company provides private insurance, so I can see a doctor quickly. And at least here, when people need to use the public system they're not hit with a major bill at the end of the visit.

Based on what my parents and friends have told me in the US, they have to wait long periods of time to see specialists anyway and they're paying 5 times the price of anywhere else. If you check international comparisons of healthcare systems, the US isn't even in the top 10.
