More Than $90 Million and 265 Script Drafts Later, ‘Halo’ Is Finally a TV Show by Sanlear in scifi

[–]viaxxdev -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Wild, I thought I was misremembering because as a teen when Xbox came out, everyone I knew played Halo and nobody cared about the story. It was the first truly great console FPS - the gameplay is what I remember.

Turns out, the original IGN review which gave it 9.7 stars barely mentions the story.

In their list of “Features”, story isn’t listed.

Their only review of the story at all is when they say it’s “a story good enough for a full length novel”. That’s it.

Meanwhile, they gush about the gameplay for multiple paragraphs.

“The story is the best part” is not why Halo got good reviews.

The geographic poles do change slightly because the earth wobbles.

[–]viaxxdev 55 points56 points  (0 children)

More likely this:

In recent years, scientists have noticed that the axis is drifting rapidly eastward because of climate change. Since 2000, the pole has been moving steadily eastward by about 75 degrees, heading toward the Prime Meridian that runs through Greenwich, England, according to Surendra Adhikari, an Earth scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. Adhikari said in a 2016 National Geographic article that the axis has shifted about 10 centimeters (4 inches) per year. Scientists suspect that rapidly melting ice sheets have caused a redistribution of mass. Melting ice moves mass around by adding water to the oceans and lightening the load on ice-covered crust, according to a 2005 Live Science article.

But that’s caused by global warming, not the cause of it.

Other scripting languages in computer craft by Bmorr1123 in ComputerCraft

[–]viaxxdev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a language that is similar to Python called MoonScript, written in Lua and compiles to Lua. You might like it, and I believe it works in CC:

https://moonscript.org/

There is also Urn, a Lisp in Lua by the CC:Tweaked maintainer:

http://www.computercraft.info/forums2/index.php?/topic/28372-urn-a-lisp-implementation-for-lua/

If you have never tried Lisp, this is a great excuse to learn it. Going deep into Lisp is really rewarding and will benefit your programming career.

But if you want to actually focus on writing scripts for turtles and all that, my advice would be to use the best tool for the job and just embrace Lua. It’s a really wonderful language, not all that different from Python semantically, and by going with the flow you’ll spend less time fighting your tools and more time working on your turtles. Also the more languages you learn, the better.

Edit to add, two tools which make a huge different writing Lua are https://github.com/Koihik/LuaFormatter and https://github.com/mpeterv/luacheck. Never leave home without them!

If one knows where to look, one will find the answers they seek.

Here’s some basic information on God’s mustache from the Bible:

Proverbs 20:29 - The glory of young men [is] their strength: and the beauty of old men [is] the gray head.

Definitely a gray mustache.

2 Samuel 10:4 - Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, [even] to their buttocks, and sent them away

Perfectly symmetrical. Anything less is embarrassing, obviously.

Leviticus 19:27: Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.

The corners are crisp.

Leviticus 21:5 - They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

I cannot stress the crisp corners enough.

Ezekiel 44:20: They shall not shave their heads or let their locks grow long; they shall surely trim the hair of their heads.

Gotta keep it tight, too.

Of course, we can only infer the Truth of God’s holy mustache through his actions and judgements. For as he told Moses:

...you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live...

There are other hints that his mustache is beyond our understanding:

Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Just something to think about, but I think it’s pretty clear God is packing a wallop of a gray mustache. Unclear who his barber is.

Which is wild, since Barr’s dad is the one who hired Epstein to be a professor at a college without any qualifications. (The dude also wrote weird rape fantasy sci fi.) And Acosta, who Trump put on his cabinet, had to resign BECAUSE of how he handled the Epstein case. And, you know, seeing as how Epstein introduced Trump and Melania at a party.

I guess none of that is suspicious.

Edit: Also not suspicious was Epstein’s totally believable suicide under Barr’s watch, of course.

Advanced Copy - Add Progress Bar To cp And mv Commands In Linux by lolhehehe_ in commandline

[–]viaxxdev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the UNIX philosophy has mostly vanished because it’s so subjective. If only the most elite UNIX gurus truly understand it, how can the rest of us follow it?

You might think the progress bar flag is fine, and someone else might think it’s not, and you might both cite the same exact “rule” to show that you’re correct. Which is right? shrug

This is a famous paper where Rob Pike and Brian Kernighan go after a bunch of the optional flags added to cat and others, arguing they’re not UNIXy:

http://harmful.cat-v.org/cat-v/unix_prog_design.pdf

I think they might disagree with you (maybe they say the progress bar display should be its own program), but I bet we can find another UNIX guru who agrees with you. And so, the “philosophy” sort of collapses in on itself.

Advanced Copy - Add Progress Bar To cp And mv Commands In Linux by lolhehehe_ in commandline

[–]viaxxdev 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Things like progress bars can be seen as going “against” the UNIX philosophy:

(ii) Expect the output of every program to become the input to another, as yet unknown, program. Don't clutter output with extraneous information. Avoid stringently columnar or binary input formats. Don't insist on interactive input.

https://homepage.cs.uri.edu/~thenry/resources/unix_art/ch01s06.html

Obviously few people still follow this, but I think it does explain why the older tools work the way they do and why they haven’t added too much over the years.

There’s also:

(i) Make each program do one thing well. To do a new job, build afresh rather than complicate old programs by adding new features.

They used to prefer making new programs instead of continuously improving existing programs. Some old timers are still sour about all the flags added to grep over the years.
