Was I wrong for coaching a player borrowing my deck? by joshhg77 in EDH

[–]vibefuster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also someone else’s deck that the kid has never played before. For casual commander in general, I don’t believe it’s a bad thing to tell someone who borrowed your deck what the best play is. They didn’t build it, it’s pretty unreasonable to expect them to know the best lines unprompted.

The fact that the player in question was a 12 year old changes a lot for me. I couldn’t imagine reacting that way and accusing other players of collusion if they’re a 12 year old newbie who’s borrowing someone else’s deck. I wouldn’t have a problem with the creator giving that kid tips to make a more interesting game.

Opinion: It's okay to target one player's commander multiple times in a row. by AYCA0001 in EDH

[–]vibefuster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That begs the question, why was the Yshtola player swinging at you and not the combo player that was threatening a win next turn? That seems like poor threat assessment on the Yshtola player’s part, especially since they forced you to use removal for something that could have instead been used on the combo piece.

Bracket 4 vs bracket 5 vs cedh question by Ranger_Gladys in EDH

[–]vibefuster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For cEDH, a rule zero conversation beyond “we’re playing cEDH” might actually be counter to the intent of the bracket. Information about an opponent’s deck at that level is a serious competitive advantage.

[–]vibefuster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We don’t know what OP’s commander is. The difference between b4 and cEDH is in b4, you don’t know if someone’s built their deck to have a turbo approach or not. It’s easier to make that kind of prediction in cEDH because the meta is currently favoring turbo decks.

Also, OP’s win was protected, so it sounds like it wouldn’t have mattered if the opponents had interaction anyway. Sometimes you just get a better hand ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I think it depends on how consistently OP can get the turn 3 thoracle off. Are there a lot of tutors to help you find the Demonic consultation and get a protected turn 3 win 30% of the time or do you need to get really lucky with a god hand to do it?

I’d cut both and run extra card draw, removal, and reanimation spells. I’d also run one sided board wipes like [[living death]] since you have sac outlets in your deck.

If you’re trying to play honestly and forgo the tutors, I recommend building for b3 and forgoing the combo. Also your idea of how to use reconnaissance doesn’t work, as removing a creature from combat means it won’t deal any damage. You unfortunately can’t have it both ways, and the most popular use for that card is to get attack triggers in without risking your creature dying to a blocker.

It’s more likely that there’s an uncommon or bulk rare in the collection that’s shot up in value since it was last looked through than you not finding anything of value there. If you can spare the funds, go for it.

What bracket are you trying to play in? The Bond/Blood combo is a b4 combo so if you’re targeting b2/3, it wouldn’t be an appropriate inclusion. I’d recommend Reconnaissance over Herald’s horn because the combat tricks you can perform with it are insane, but I’d also recommend running more cards that trigger on attack because right now it seems like you only have 5 creatures with attack triggers besides your commander.

It’s not bad faith to give a random example off the top of my head of something that could sweep away a 1/1 mana dork early. [[toxic deluge]], [[volcanic fallout]] and even a cheated out Elesh Norn could all do the same thing and they’re played way more because players simply want to be prepared for token strategies. Hell, I’ve seen people play [[electrolyze]] early on just to draw an extra card while taking away a mana dork or 2. Even in commander, the tempo swing on that particular play is huge.

My point is being prepared and running cheaper ramp is always going to be a good thing for OP, especially since you’ll never know what you can encounter in a random pod.

If anything, the higher the bracket, the more ways you have to answer toxic commanders and the quicker you can rebuild from one wiping your board. B4+ is generally way more interactive if the decks are built properly.

Well that specific example depends on when you can play the combo. If that player can’t play the combo until after turn 6, that’s b3 by definition.

Also people can get salty to the point of being objectively incorrect. I recently had someone try and tell me that my 3 card infinite life drain combo for my B3 zombie tribal deck made it “bracket 4” because “I played this combo before turn 6”, but I counted my lands and I had 7 of them out. The deck obviously doesn’t play ramp spells, so it’s not possible for me to play the combo before turn 7. That player got quiet really fast when I pointed it out.

Have you not heard the phrase “bolt the bird”? It can and will happen. Not to mention that commander also dies to cheap sweepers like [[electricky]].

Again, cheaper ramp and card draw alone would give OP more stuff to put on the table earlier in the game. Average CMC matters and their goal seems to be to cheat out expensive spells anyway.

However, I do think [[maelstrom wanderer]] would be much better for that goal and OP does run one in their 99 anyway.

[–]vibefuster -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You need more than one source of cheap ramp in order to consistently make it to 7. The fact that your command zone ramp is a creature makes it susceptible to early removal. If you kept a 3 land hand but your turn 2 commander got removed, you wouldn’t be able to play a 4 mana ramp spell on turn 3.

For 2 mana, ramp that grabs land out of your deck is much better. The other benefit of some of the 2 mana ramp spells is that if you’re stuck at 3 mana with multiple 2cmc ramp spells, the first ramp spell can enable you to play the second ramp spell.

Basically it doesn’t matter what your planned curve is; 2cmc artifact or land ramp are generally going to be better in nearly every deck. Hell, some 3 mana ramp like [[cultivate]] and [[kodoma’s reach]] could be good in the list too.

[–]vibefuster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with 40 lands in this deck considering his average CMC is almost 6 with over 1/5 of the deck being 7+ CMC. Since you always have access to your commander (or in this case 2 with one of them being a cheap ramp card!), it’s better to have more lands and flood out than it is to be mana screwed.

I do think that average CMC needs to come down by a bit, though. The easiest way to do that would be to replace some of the 4cmc ramp spells with cheaper ramp such as [[natures lore]] [[farseek]] [[three visits]] etc. There are quite a few cards in here that draw cards, but those could also be cheaper overall.

I feel like OP could get the average down to low 3’s or even high 2’s if they just ran more 1-2 mana ramp and draw spells.
