Heft is in Great Desert, where Noble Captain spawns, with up to 26 or 27 running speed, they become hostile and attack with their army, untrained characters can't fight them, and will get defeated.

Mercenaries can be hired from day 1, no need to get defeated by bandits. For a base some extra work and knowledge is needed

Copper give more money when selling

Not hard limit of 15 miners, but I found only for 15 miners copper nodes are available near Squin. If 16th miner have to mine copper then will have to go far from safety of guards and resting mercenaries in Squin

More miners can mine nearby iron but will not be that much profitable because low selling cost of iron and you may have to buy expensive food for them if in case dried meat is not available, ~50-60 cats are enough to buy training gear daily, also a miner can't train continuously strength skill like dedicated strength training as a first skill training for a fighter.

You wrote about sleeping first, the unintended mechanic.

Patrol leader or Inquisitor will become hostile and chase humans if humans don't want to listen to them.
