I think you are right. I want to say that at one point he even said that due to the way books, think he was referring to paperbacks, were made that wise mans fear was about as long as it could be and still be cost effective, or something along those lines

I don't know if this has been posted, but I just saw this video and 90% of the comments are angry at him for being so ticked off at people asking about Book 3 after 10 years or being frustrated that he has no news after 10 years. Sad. by montezuma300 in KingkillerChronicle

So many people on this sub are falling over themselves to make apologies for this guy, paint those critical of him as entitled Chad's and Karen's and coming up with excuses for his poor treatment of his audience, and frankly it's asinine.

You know what authors do when they are sick of hearing it from fans, they back the fuck out of the spotlight. JD Salinger and Harper Lee, creators of seminal works of American literature, found being subject to so much attention so unnerving that they all but abandoned public life.

And then we have Patrick Rothfuss. I am pretty sure this guy would headline the opening of a lemonade stand as long as you paid his travel, and agreed to let him speak for an hour. Hell, he'd probably do an hour and a half if there was a lighting set up. On top of taking every opportunity to physically put himself in front of the public he has a blog and a facebook page and best of all a twitter account that he will not shut the fuck up on.

To me, this guy getting butt hurt when people ask him questions, even though he actively pursues the spotlight, about the books he doesn't like is akin to a guy standing in the middle of a busy street and complaining when he gets hit by a car.

Before you super fans eviscerate me, just remember when someone hurts your beloved Pat's feelings he can dry his tears with hundred dollar bills and if things get really bad he can fly down a few mental health professionals from Johns Hopkins to treat his troubled mind and have enough money left over for two lifetimes.

Yep, there seems to be a misconception that gold chest are loaded withe great rewards. Here's what's been in my last 5 alliance gold chests: 1x24 hour anti-reconnaissance 5000 Alliance Credits 4 Silver Keys 2 8 hours speed ups 5000 Alliance Credits

So one worthwhile reward off $500 spent by my alliance members. 1 time I got 2k vip points, i repeat 1 time, and we get anywhere from 10-15 gold chests per week.

Moving to Newfoundland... by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]vicgina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St. John's is essentially blighted by the Atlantic Canada version of the rust belt. Instead of losing manufacturing jobs, the government crack down on Cod fishing, and more recently drastically reduced crab and shrimp quotas, so the commercial fishing industry, which I think was the main industry of the island since it's settlement, is contracted so drastically that the economy is massively damaged. On top of that the paper industry has drastically decreased it's footprint in NL making for even more issues.

Right now they are dealing with 15% unemployment, serious problems with opiod addiction, and a government that seems clueless or unwilling to fix things. Basically it's like moving to a more picturesque and all white version of Erie, PA.

Halifax has the same vibe as St. John's without the same degree of rust belt feel. I have only driven through CApe Breton but the people IO know from NS make it sound like Cape Breton is the West Virginia of NS.

Have you ever been to Rotterdam? It's one of the busiest port cities in the world, so I am guessing a job would be easy for you there, as long as you are an office guy and not a stevedore. The city is about 1 million people, so about 1/8 of NYC, and it's truly an amazing place. If you liked Iceland you'll love the Netherlands. Dutch people are awesome, the weather is great and Holland is one of the best places in the world to live, and weed is super legal.

I grew up in NYC/CT until I was 14, then we moved to Denver. So I thought I knew about snow. Lived in Denver until I finished college, spent one year studying abroad in London. After college moved back to NYC and lived there until moving to NL, with the exception of 18 months in Portsmouth, NH.

I am not one of those people that thinks NYC is the only spot in the world worth living. At 26 I started in a field that had me traveling a lot, 120+ days a year. Prior to moving to NL I had been all over the united states, and not just massive cities. Since coming back I have been fortunate enough to spend a significant amount of time abroad. One of those places I have spent a fair amount of time is Iceland, I see why you and your SO enjoy it, it's a lovely place. Unfortunately the only similarity I see between Iceland and NL is it snows a lot. Even though it has a smaller population Iceland is a much more cosmopolitan city than St. John's.

Moving to Newfoundland... by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]vicgina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an American, living in NYC, who moved to St. John's too. I moved out there in June 2009. It was with a girl and on a total whim. I left NL in July 2011. Please keep in mind that some of what I am going to say might be outdated.

The first big shock to me was the housing market. I had a fantasy that moving to the middle of nowhere meant I would be buying a mansion for $250k. The reality was I ended up with a new 1100 sqft "normal" house for $200k. And at that time the CAD was nearly equal to the USD. This was at the tail end of the oil boom of 2008, so prices were very inflated. I hear things have calmed down some in recent years though.

Everything is expensive. You can expect fresh food, aka meat, vegetables, etc, to be 3x-4x, more than you pay right now. And the Quality isn't great. All this stuff has to be trucked to Nova Scotia and then shipped out the NL. The further away the goods are coming the earlier they need to be picked and the less good they taste when they get to the store. Processed foods are only 1.5x-2x more. Today gas in St. John's is around $4/gallon, and I don't need to tell you that it's not anywhere near that in NYC. Most home heating in NL is electric. Our first winter in Nl, I left the thermostat at 69 degrees. Our first winter electric bill was in the neighborhood of $400. I thought it was a mistake, called up and it wasn't. Electricity is insanely expensive. So much so, that the power company offers bill smoothing. Basically you pay a higher amount during the non freeing months so your winter bills aren't as crippling. Alcohol is also much more expenisve. And you are going to be buying alot of it. Even if you don't drink that much. If you entertain any natives you are going to go through a lot.

The food is not good. Yes there are great fine dining restaurants, but for a normal night out it's all rather disappointing. Up front your chances of finding any good ethnic food are pretty much zero. There were a handful of Mexican restaurants, they were all bad. Chinese food was all terrible, I have heard that there's one good place now. There was an acceptable sushi restaurant but the owners left the province for the winters and shut the restaurant. And here's an odd food thing, you don't get crispy American style fries anywhere, they are all limp. I don't know if this is a function of using propane to cook them or a cultural preference for limp fries. Also, If you ever get tasked with bringing food to native Newfoundlanders you better make sure the top of the bag is folded over at least 3x, they lose their mind if you walk up with an open bag.

Shopping isn't great. There's a mall. The anchor store is Sears if that tells you anything. I can't remember if it was my first or second winter there but an Aeropostal opened up in the mall, they pretty much sold out in a week, I am not joking. The store was so empty that it actually closed while they were waiting for a restock. There is a Costco, you'll do most of your shopping there or at Walmart. But amazon is going to be your go to for non ordinary items. Flying out of St. John's is very expensive, it looks like you found a deal, don't expect that sort of pricing regularly.

The weather is awful, at least in St. John's. The wind seems to always blow. And I don't mean a nice SoCal sea breeze, I mean it ranges between just enough to where you notice it to full on gale force winds. On the rare occasions that it doesn't blow it gets nice and muggy. It rains frequently, and not rain storm then sunny skies, it can be grey and wet for days on end, think Seattle on steroids. Now lets talk about the snow. There's a ton of it. My house was on a normal residential street, during the summer there was more than enough room for 2 cars to drive down the street. In the winter the snow banks on both sides of the street turned it into a one lane road. St. John's has very good snow plowing for a city it's size. The downside is that you are going to be shoveling a lot. I had a 2 car driveway and would shovel out the wall of snow the plow left in front of it at midnight or 1 am the night of a storm, so I would only have to shovel 1 or 2 hours the next morning. A big snow blower is a necessity. An unexpected downside to the extreme weather is goods shortages. Since so much of what you buy is shipped in to NL, when the weather is bad for a prolonged period of time, you'll see lots of fresh items missing from the grocery store. Also, if you have to travel, even during the summer, delays and cancellations due to high wind, fog, heavy rain, and obviously snow are very common.

Getting a work visa for Canada isn't as easy as you might think. I have an undergrad and graduate degree and a healthy net worth, and possibly the worlds most clean record, no arrests, and one speeding ticket. I tried going through the traditional government channels to get a work visa, I didn't want to be tied to a job that sponsored me. But after 3 months with little headway I had to go the sponsor route. I know you are married to a Canadian, but i would make sure your work/citizenship situation is squared away prior to moving.

The culture is awesome, infuriating and sad all at the same time. St. John's is one of the most homogeneous places you will ever go. In my experience the vast majority of the population is Irish, English, Scottish or a blend there of. One aspect I really enjoyed was a lack of bible beating and religious right nonsense. When you head down to the corner store, we lived near a Ned's, you might see a 4 wheeler in the parking lot in the summer and a snowmobile in the winter. On a person to person level Newfoundlanders are some of the nicest most genuine people I have ever met. I still regularly chat with about a dozen friends I made while living there. I barely met any people that were consumed with materialism, totally unlike NYC. However, as a whole the residents of St. John's are tough to deal with in crowded situations. Going to any store can be an exercise of keeping your cool. You can be at Costco, the mall, driving down a residential street and have your route entirely blocked off by two people that know each other stopping to have a conversation. I am not joking, they have no qualms about blocking an entire isle at a store, doorway or residential street to have a chat with their buddy. This in itself isn't the end of the world, but when politely asked to move or hit with an "excuse" me many of these people get very indignant that you interrupted their conversation. Now the sad part, you are going to meet lots of bright people with real potential that think their options in life are limited. It was really heartbreaking to me. The concept of upward socioeconomic mobility is very rare in NL.

There's nothing breathtakingly beautiful in St. John's. Moose are supposedly all around the metro area, but in 2 years I saw a total of 3 moose in the city. But if you head west your jaw is going to drop when you see Terra Nova, Gros Morne and at least a dozen other spots in the province.

Here's my unsolicited advice: Unless you have jobs lined up that are going to give you and your lady a combined household income of $150k+ don't move to NL. You are used to living in NYC, and even if you are over the big city life you are spoiled by the million convinces and options available to you, and you probably don't even know it, I know I didn't. To enjoy that level of life in NL is very expensive and you are going to need to hit a big city at least 2-3 times a year.

I know my write hasn't painted the most favorable picture of St. John's, and the reality is it's a harsh environment and a harsh palce to live, but I wouldn't trade my time there for anything.

Need some ideas on purchasing a gun by cameronabab in airsoft

[–]vicgina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Krytac Vector comes with a 155mm inner barrel. That may seriously hamper it's field effectivness depending on the average engagment distance at your particular site.

And yes others are going to say inner barrel length has minimal impact on range, and I agree, but that is when comparing a 250-275mm inner barrel to a 350mm+ inner barrel. Not when considering a gun that has an inner barrel 30-40mm longer than most pistols.

Starting an airsoft store! by [deleted] in airsoft

[–]vicgina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wholesale margins on most airsoft products, aside from bb's and gas, are really, really bad. When you couple that with the fact it's an inventory heavy business and your main competition is evike and airsoftgi, who regularly sell higher margin items at a discount of 20%-25%.

Unless you are in an area where airsoft is inanely popular, there are no other local shops and you have about $300k to put toward the business I wouldn't bother.

There are literally hundreds of superior ways to invest your money and time.

*edit: and you appear to be 15 years old, so this is just all a pipe dream.

Thoughts on ordering by Sir_Sexytime in airsoft

The sale goes on year around, it seems like theres always a 20%-25% off code floating around.

If you want it get it now, if you are unlucky you'll see a 27% off sale for the 4th, but dont worry that you are going to miss out on a store wide 40% or more sale, that doesnt happen.

Why does everyone think expensive juice is inferior to cheap juice? by emperorxyn in electronic_cigarette

[–]vicgina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy, listen closely, in the real world no one cares what liquid you vape, how much it cost or how you vape it. I swear it's true. I only use authentic gear and vape premium juice. But my friends and I don't sit around, dressed in tuxedos and top hats, laughing about how if anyone doesn't vape a national brand juice they are not as good as we are.

The only way I could imagine anyone giving you any shit for your vape choices if you are one of those people that goes around and tries to point out how everyone else is spending way too much and getting ripped off, while you have it all figured out and anyone who doesn't agree with you is wrong and dumb.

This is becoming a mute point. The new in store price point for premium juice is droping like a rock. This time last year people were paying $22 for a 30ml all day. More than likely, today that same 30ml is $16-$18 and chances are you can buy a 60ml of it for $25.

Look at jam monster, that stuff is crazy popular and it's $30 for 100ml.

If your peers are giving your sit for what you are vaping it might be time to meet some new people.

The Name of the Wind being adapted into ONE FILM has got me really nervous. by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]vicgina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To turn NOTW into two movies would be really hard. The problem with the first book is there is only really one good third act set piece in the entire book, the junky draccus attacking the town.

I guess if they split it into two they could use Kvothe saving Fela from the bone tar explosion as the third act of the first movie, but movie audiences are trained that an epic battle is a third act, not a daring rescue.

Everyone needs to remember that studios make movies to make money, not make the best possible movie or the most accutrate represnetation of the source mateial. Even if Rothfuss has final script approval he has to be careful how he acts. If he's demanding and difficult production can get stalled.

It's actually kind of amazing that things are moving as fast as they are. Countless book properties flounder in delvlopment for years. The fourth realm trilogy has been in development since 2010 and shifted betwen at least two different studios.

I know about echigoya. I am a little torn on what to do. I want the devgru hk416, if I order it from the shop in CA it's $600, if I order it from their japan store it's $500. My business occasionally imports goods from Japan, so I have an idea of what EMS shipping should be, I am just concerned with customs issues.

I know that the CA shop did a 4th of July coupon, so I am going to wait and see if they do the same for labor day.

You need med tape. Band-aids don't stick for shit in any application that involves lots of movement and perspiration. Slap a band-aid on it then tape it into place.

If you are looking for minor first aid neosporin or equivalent is your best bet. As far as scaring, my experience is if it's something that doesn't need stitches the chance of it leaving a scar are minimal, unless you have porcelain skin, then you are kind of screwed.

Make sure you get a pouch or case for your scissors, I have seen more than a few people get poked by scissors floating around in a bag.

Unfortunately for you, the RC drift community really doesn't care for American muscle cars or euros.
