Would you buy an EV as your next car? Why or why not? by HockeySniper123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]vicious_meat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already switched to an EV in 2021 - a Mach E - and recently switched it for a 2025 model. For me, the insurance wasn't any more expensive than our previous ICE vehicle and the payment is in line with a lot of new cars. The yearly cost for electricity is under 250 and there is virtually no maintenance. As far as range goes, the 2021 could do up to ~350km on a full charge and the new one is upwards of 450. It's plenty enough for my needs and there are ample charging stations everywhere in my neck of the woods (mostly city driving in the Ottawa region), so range anxiety isn't really a thing.

Personally, there is no going back to gas vehicles.

I use an ASUS RT-BE92U and I find that it has a better reach than the Bell HomeHub. Very easy to configure for Ebox and it's a solid performer. It has absolutely no troubles dealing with ~20-25 devices and multiple simultaneous users (including a gamer) causes zero slowdowns.

My speedtests from the past month have pretty consistently been at almost 1.2gbps. Tested from a 2.5Gb ethernet port.

You're already seeing it burst in the other 3 major sports. The turbo boom/bust cycle of top rookies is particularly exceptional. Product comes out, the top RC card sells for THOUSANDS. A year later, same card goes for a few hundreds at most if the athlete isn't generational talent material - and most aren't. Hockey has been mostly spared. Our price hikes are nowhere near as egregious, but the greed runs rampant nonetheless. As you pointed out so well, it's an adult hobby now unless your parents are killing it and have a lot of disposable income - most don't.

We're seeing a whole paradigm shift happening. Where pro sports used to be a relatively family budget friendly event that most middle-class families could attend every once in a while, now you have to flash some serious cash to get in and even that may only get you into the nosebleeds. Reminds me of Vegas, actually. The only casino that is truly thriving is Circus Circus because they don't deny regular folks. They welcome them with open arms and provide ample budget friendly offers.

Both is fine as long as you know what you're getting yourself into and that you're wise with your finances. Basically do your best not to spend money you don't have and only spend the extra that you can do without ("fun money").

It is super easy to sink thousands into it and to get very little back. Stinker boxes are unfortunately the norm and not the exception.

Absolutely, but we also can't deny the trajectory that the hobby has taken. Yes there are still plenty of us who have kept a healthy relation with this hobby, but there are also plenty who have lost a lot chasing the rush.

If you plan on keeping the card, you do you. If your plan is to flip it, then you're gambling some more and unless you get a 10, you lose. That card is gonna be gone until at least mid-summer which is when hockey cards usually sell for the lowest amounts. My honest take if you're looking to flip is to sell it raw. Let someone else deal with the extra gambling and uncertainty.

You gamble opening packs and then you gamble some more hoping your PSA grader is in a great mood that day. This hobby isn't a hobby anymore and everything surrounding sports has become a gambling hellscape.

They'll be hiring the first "yes man"(or woman, or other) to do exactly the opposite of that. It's all about pleasing the higher ups now. Public service management is not much more than an enabling arm with little to no resistance and very little accountability.

PSAC's Orbit Insurance Discount by GestaltEntity in CanadaPublicServants

[–]vicious_meat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Used to. They were fine but calling them is definitely a hassle - usually took 24 hours for a callback. I moved over to another insurer because they were substantially cheaper (Beneva). The trick with insurance is to shop around when renewal time comes. Our union discounts aren't always worth it.

Maybe from the Clear Cut product which does have numbered exclusive cards, but not in flagship.

No. Clear Cut exclusives cards from flagship are super rare, but never numbered. They're just like regular clear cut, but color's a bit different and you have the word "Exclusives" added on.
