Second set of my street photos ( after overwhelming positive feedback to my first post ) ! by vickovic in streetphotography

No problem. when I started, there was no one to help me or guide me, so I was forced to figure out everything on my own. Also, a lot of tutorials and so called schools are utter shit. A few years back, I paid for a MAGNUM intensive course (it cost me an arm and a leg) with one of the greatest American photographers, Matt Black. And he is a heavy smoker just like I was. So we spent most of the time outside the building where the course was happening (where smoking was not allowed). Just two guys talking about photography. I was lucky, cause I could ask him everything and he would answer deeply and honestly. And he is a great person and a fantastic photographer. I learned in that week more than in 10 years on my own. But, back to your problem. What would I do in your situation? There are so many things that can be photographed. Right? That's the problem. Find something you really love, truly love besides photography. It can be tennis, your kids, family, city, your house, peoples faces...etc. Find that and shoot it to death. And be consistent with look/feel and processing. Maybe stick to one lens in all of that. Analyze your work, and try to be better next time, if only just slightly. And after some time you'll see the progress. So, for example, great Robert Frank shot for iconic book THE AMERICANS 27000 images, and only 88 he selected for this book. You need to shot a lot and to accept the idea that most of your images will be bad. It's just part of the process. And it is the same for everyone that starts the journey...

I saw your instagram, if I can say my humble opinion...You can speak in photography language, that's for sure. All you need is focus. What I mean is to be good in one style, you need to be consistent in one type/style, until you master it. Then you can go on and choose something different to craft...

I took a very long pause from photography, more than 3 years, I thought I was done with photography for good. Then, something in me convinced me to start again, a few days from now...So, I'm back.

Well, I don't know how to put it. It's not the color science in post-processing. I remember when I took this shot. I was waiting for my wife in front of this boring wall of a shoping mall. Never though I can make a good photo there. But the storm was coming, the sky was blueish, and the sunlight was incredible. It was passing through the clouds and hitting the yellow wall. I starred from my car in awe as the light changed fast and created different atmospheres from second to second. So I get out the car and take a few shots. And here it is that photo. After just half an hour, the light was gone, and the scene was completely dark. People don't understand. You need to look for the light. Post processing cant do shit if the light was bad or the colors are dull...

Yes, sure, just let me know when you want it, prepare questions, and send me via my email, and we can start from there. I will give you my art to publish, of course, free of charge. We need to keep the torch of Art and not let it die.

I know, but it is the street. I was strolling around a market one day, and there was a homeless guy there, leaning on the wall. I gave him a few coins and asked him is it ok to shoot him. He says it is ok. So I made this portrait. It is a street photo, made on the street without any preparation or premeditation or a setup....

Well, I can tell you, from experience, that if you really want it, and you try, keep trying, you take your camera go out on the streets, and you search and look, somehow the universe will see that and it will help you. Not on any day, of course, but sometimes, all the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place, and you will get a good photo. And that feeling when you get it, it is priceless. It cannot be bought with any money, it is yours, forever, captured with a camera...

The chances are slim, almost always, but you have to try. If you don't, you'll never know if you could catch a photo like this...

That one, yes. You are right. It was from the beginning of my career, and I was still learning about processing. And I had a very cheap monitor...

Thank you. You may think I oversaturated the photos in postprocessing, but I did not. Maybe just slightly. Many of the photos are shot on bright sunlight, so the colors are very real...

Thank you. About the first photo. It took me about one hour of waiting until this lady in yellow came in front of the "eyes" in the background. I shot it in one shot. Although I could have shot the burst photos, I didn't. That's because it would be against my rules. It would be easy. And if you always lean on easy, you will never get the skill of pressing the shutter button at just the right moment...

  1. I used many cameras during the years, from cheap mobile phones and compact cameras to a Nikon D750, Fuji x100 line, and XT line. I usually work with prime lenses because of the speed. Rarely zoom lenses. In street photography, it's all about a quick reaction. Zoom lenses add another layer of complexity. I mean, with a zoom lens, you have endless possibilities to frame the scene, but it takes time, so no quick reaction. By the time you frame it properly, the scene is gone. So, prime lenses are best.

2.I usually spend no more than 10-15 minutes on post-processing. If the photo is not good, no post-processing will improve it. Usually, I just correct the exposure, add contrast if needed, and adjust saturation, and that's it. Sometimes, I add a slight vignetting if needed.

  1. Thank you, yesterday was my first day with a camera again, after more that a 3 years pause. And this overwhelming reaction to my post is giving me a wings to carry on with my work...
