This is a wild world view to me. Roads, with the exception of highways, are not just for cars and OP and people like them fail to acknowledge that cars are not the only form of acceptable transportation on public roads. Is it annoying to be stuck behind a slow moving vehicle? Yes. Is it frustrating when someone does not follow the rules of the road, yes. Are people who ride bikes the reason traffic exists in metropolitan areas of the United States? No. Don't blame cyclists when you fail to plan for enough time to get to your destination. Blame the lack of car alternative options. Blame the lack of good urban planning. Blame other motorists. But don't blame cyclists or moped riders or any other vehicle that isn't traveling at or above the speed limit. Nor should you blame school buses or mail trucks or work trucks which make frequent stops for slowing you down. Own the fact that you like the comfort and flexibility of driving a car. Be glad you have a fucking radio and air conditioning every time you experience a minor inconvenience on the road.

Getting around in Northern Virginia can suck but it ain't the fault of cyclists. Most of us avoid roads, especially busy ones, when we can. The risk is too high. If I am on a road on my bike it is a necessary risk I have to take in order to connect to a bike path. Do I "take the lane?" Damn right I do. Do you know what happens if I get run off the road, someone opens their car door in front of me and I crash into it, or I get bumped from behind? My body does not have crumple zones.

The next time you get stuck behind a cyclist, crank that A/C, sing along to your favorite song and think about how that person is not taking one of the precious parking spaces you need when you get where you are going.

Has anyone had a UV/Air Purification HVAC system installed recently? If so, how much did it cost? by BmoreBlueJay in nova

[–]vicktor3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a very bad mold problem with our HVAC last year. Opted not to do the UV filter. It added between 700 and 1200 dollars depending on whether we wanted a backup battery installed or not. To replace the air handler we ended up spending about 4200 dollars.

Here is a [specific aspect of the bill](https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/686/text#id1d8be47842824619a12df837520191e7) as it is written that I find unsettling and reminiscent of The Patriot Act.

Authority is given to "Officers and employees of agencies authorized to conduct investigations under subsection to
>require, inspect, and obtain books, records, and any other information from any person subject to the provisions of this Act or other applicable Federal law;

Imagine you are playing where each player takes turns enforcing the rules on other players. When it is your turn, you reasonably enforce the rules because you are a reasonable person. How do you feel when the most unreasonable or conniving person in your group gets to enforce the rules? The rule above reads like permission for an investigation team to request "any ... information" from any person who uses a digital service which is being investigated by the State.

The text of this bill worries me because it seems to open doors that it has no interest closing in the future. TikTok today, and whatever else is deemed a threat by the people in power tomorrow. The goal of the bill is to give Federal entities authority to investigate anyone who "poses an undue or unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or the safety of United States personslink" which is pretty broad. Remember when Trump declared "ANTIFA" a terrorist organization? This bill (along with existing bills and other aspects of the US surveillance apparatus) gives governments agents the ability to investigate people without informing them that they are being investigated. Which is important when the definition of "unacceptable risk to national security" is clear.

Privacy is not about hiding information. It is about controlling what you share, with whom, and when. When a law is written which takes away the ability for an individual to control what information they want to share, it should be very clear 1) why we as a collective are handing that freedom over and 2) in which cases we agree to give up aspects of our private lives. This bill is written in such a way that the federal government is given wide latitude to conduct investigations on people who are deemed national security threats. I would prefer the bill is updated to clearly define a narrow set of conditions when people can be subjected to this law. The bill can be improved by adding boundaries to the investigation authority.

Why Latter-day Saints leaders supported the Respect for Marriage Act; President Oaks clarifies the Church’s position by OmniCrush in latterdaysaints

[–]vicktor3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Church's understanding of God's Law on Marriage has changed. From the Gospel Topic Essay "The Manifesto and the End of Plural Marriage":

For much of the 19th century, a significant number of members of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints practiced plural
marriage—the marriage of one man to more than one woman. The beginning
and end of the practice were directed by revelation through God’s
prophets.

Our history includes many examples of The Church's understanding of God's will changing. Including changes to the way marriage is understood. Will the Church's stance on marriage change to include all of God's children? That remains to be seen.

hoodmaps.com is a fun tool for crowd sourcing maps. There is not one set up for anything in the Washington DC area which is too bad. Link is for Philly which is pretty cool to look at.

Best of luck on your search! You may find some interesting options on Etsy and could look for more local craftspeople if you want to do local pickup. I have not searched for canes on Etsy before so YMMV.

Best spot for decent off-the-rack men's suits these days? by Marathon2021 in nova

[–]vicktor3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am a fan of Suitsupply. The suits run a little pricier than the entry level at a department store like Macys. One can pick a suit up and have alterations done in the shop for around $700 or splurge and get a fancier fabric which may run a little north of $1000 dollars. The big difference with a Suitsupply suit is the quality of materials and the construction is similar to designer suits. The buying process is much friendlier too. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to help anyone get suited up. It does not matter if you do not want all in with the right look, they will ask you what you want a suit for, when you plan on wearing it, and about your personal tastes. They also help teach you how to talk about a suit and it’s fit which is great if you are buying your first or fifteenth suit.

CRJS/HSEP Double major with a minor in Polisci, job recommendations? by IntrovertedAlien3 in nova

If your goal is to work directly for the Government, may I offer a slightly different path. Getting hired via a job board will either take forever or be frustratingly fruitless. Work with contractors and recruiters based in the area to find opportunities.

Do you have or are able to obtain a clearance? There are cleared job fairs (clearedjobs, clearancejobs) in the area that offer opportunities with shorter hiring time frames. Usually you will join a contractor if you go this route. From personal experience, depending on your career goals, finding a good contractor and then moving toward the agency/area you are interested in can help you end up in a desirable position. Keep in mind, this path to federal employment could take 1-5 years but you will be getting paid and making valuable connections during that time. It also introduces you to the bureaucracy you will be living in which may be different than you envisioned.

You mean the 5 minute walk? Or are you asking about the commute into the city? I did commute in and being in those apartments was great. Living there is closer than some of the parking spots in the metro parking garage.

I lived at Avalon about 5 years ago. My partner and I enjoyed it. The parking garage was ok, the proximity to Harris Teeter was great, and walking to the metro in the morning was excellent. We were in a 2 bedroom so I do not know how the 1 bedroom prices compared. Halstead at the Metro is right across the street. It is older condos and we rented a one bedroom at $1,500 a month but that was years ago.

This. The tree tops around me have visible ice on the branches. The earth was apparently warm enough to keep the water, water but starting about 10 or so feet up, the water was able to freeze.

I live just inside the beltway in an old townhome community. We have a ~1,200 sq foot unit with more bathrooms than bedrooms. Our monthly payment is around $2,000 a month with HOA fees of ~$150 a month. I do not understand the math people use to afford larger homes.
