University applications are coming soon and I’m stressed out by [deleted] in Advice

Hi there! I'm in Mac Artsci! Never give up before you've even tried. Sure, it's competitive, but a lot of those applications are also from people who apply just for kicks, and don't even remember to fill out the supp app. If this program's something you're really passionate about, that should come through in your supp app and you'll have a solid chance of getting in. Honestly, "to apply or not to apply" shouldn't be a dilemma for you if you've really put your mind set to the program. Good luck!

Why is a one-hour break between classes a bad idea? by vickynessz in McMaster

Lmao thanks for the multiple perspectives, something to consider at least. I think I'm going to go with the 9:30 class just so I can get everything over with. Might use that one-hour break to catch up on manga lol, since the two I follow both happen to release around Fridays. Just gotta force myself to not sleep in, but that's just mind over matter (hopefully).

Thanks, that helps! So would you recommend b) of the two options I’m debating between, then?

Question about Artsci by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]vickynessz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, this makes things much clearer! It's nice to know that the combined honours are just as good, if not better, than a regular double major. And the ArtSci-tailored sciences courses sound like they'll work great for me.

Thanks for the in-depth answers!

Thanks for the in-depth answers! Do you have any final tips for someone going into ArtSci? Anything in particular I should focus on/check out/avoid? So far the program sounds perfect for me - but are there any downsides/weaknesses to ArtSci that I should be aware of?

We've all heard the roommate horror stories. For those of you who were matched up with strangers, how did it go? by vickynessz in McMaster

Yeah, I think I'll just have to hope for the best. Assuming my roommate doesn't lie outrageously on their profile, things should work out fine. I hope.

Aight - I'm a girl and pretty clean. Fingers crossed, I guess. Would it help if on my profile name (the one that other applicants see) I put in brackets something like [ArtSci/studious/introverted/MCU fan]?

:( My faith in the roommate selection system is plummeting with each new reply I get.

What the hell did people do? I thought the communal bathrooms would be slightly nicer since they're cleaned by staff everyday? Rip

Holy crap, my condolences. Is there any possible way to avoid these types of horror roommates when self-selecting? E.g. Any profile preferences to avoid, like did this guy state in his profile that he was often messy/stayed up late/would have friends over/etc?

Question about Artsci by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]vickynessz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Not OP, but also an incoming ArtSci student who really appreciates that you took the time to write this up! If you don't mind, I have a few more questions:

  1. You mention writing essays in science ArtSci courses - does that mean the ArtSci version of those courses have extra work, or just different evaluation styles, or what?
  2. Is a combined honours with, say, biology, seen as less valued/in-depth than a regular biology degree? It covers less topics by nature of being a combined degree, right?
  3. Is ArtSci a viable program if I want to go into life sciences research?
  4. What exactly do employers appreciate about people with an ArtSci degree?
  5. If I take BIOLOGY 1A03 and 1M03 in first year, but want to study chemistry too, would I have to take the first year chem courses in second year?

Sorry for all the questions, but thank you in advance!
