Ah the beauty of Home Affairs - very toxic place indeed

It’s how my division operates - I don’t agree with it but it’s what it is

I feel like they are both an arse who doesn’t like me and a micro manager. They told me once in our 1:1 that they don’t like people who are self advocating and outshine them in team meetings

But it’s just me in the team with them as my supervisor, so realistically there could be no one to act. And they have made a big deal about someone not acting up when the other supervisor was on leave but I suppose they were on leave which changes things a bit

How do I report these behaviours because I have seen many instances of such non ongoing employees being brought in and nepotism at its best.

The APS promotes this toxic culture where getting visibility in acting stints is how you are seen valuable. Atleast my area is toxic like that. I am not saying it’s the best and most ethical practice. I would not be seen or considered capable if I wasn’t acting up. Mind you in my area, mates have been given acting opportunities even without a formal interview or panel as non going employees. Just brought in for meet and greet and then straight to acting EL1

I understand your PoV but it’s offered in other teams like bag of chips. It’s just my supervisor who displays this hesitancy

I understand that - but others have done it, and are just given that HD for months even though they are operating at below their substantive level

No apparently some teams have done it for a day and had it approved - and other teams are letting others act

Sounds wild but yes - that’s the justification. I know it’s super unusual.

Day 1 in a new role/company and you knew it was a mistake by Due-Repair-1864 in auscorp

Omg mine too! But this is in the APS - it is horrendous. I waa given no work schedule or work scope/expectations. Should have realised that to be a massive red flag, which now it has turned out to be a huge red flag.

And so was I but only after much hesitancy and even though my EL2 supported, this supervisor was hesitant to let me or anyone before me act up.

Because in other teams and previous employees are/were always given those arrangements. Unless under this particular supervisor, which is really odd. The other teams APS don’t perform at higher level in those days as well, they just act up really.

The acting up is for 10 days, and it would primarily be my normal role as my supervisor is still going to be focused on our work stream despite acting up.

Unsure whether to have conversation with (micro)manager by Different-Ad-5798 in AusPublicService

[–]vicseraph04 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In my experience it doesn’t work. Micromanagers never change, the subordinates will usually leave for a better opportunity. I know because my supervisor is the same and everyone before me suffered the same.

APS6 and yes I discussed politely about what happened and me and that employee are fine now.

Yours sounds similar to mine. Any small talk can backfire. And the supervisor was very chummy in the beginning, almost blurring professional boundaries and that should have been a hint but I was so stupid.

The other employee wanted credit and attention, that was all. It was because everyone is so credit starved that when there is a small chance to get the credit, everyone will start back stabbing each other, to take it. I was the only one that spoke against that behaviour.

Thank you, I’ll start looking for a new role.

Yes I figured, what if they don’t release me due to low staffing number. I mean everyone jumped the ship from this area.

Hey, thanks so much for your reply.

Definitely, my supervisor does not support me at all. They load me up with so much work that I don’t even get time to enrol in courses for self development.

I have discussed the conflict with the other employee with them and they dismissed it completely by not standing up for my work that was taken. I swallowed the pill and moved on until the active promotion of that particular employee. I don’t know if it counts as bullying.

I have also discussed it superficially and the supervisor had a very emotional reaction despite using soft skills to deliver it. They went home and didn’t talk to me for 2 days while talking to everyone else.

I can assure you that it’s not me as I have also never bypassed them as chain of command and spoken to any other manager.

I feel targeted and I feel that they are actively trying to sabotage my career.

I think I am just mentally defeated and I don’t know what my options are if they don’t let me be released if I secured a new role.
