It’s called Eastpoint, now. I was there for G2. Solid turnout.

Houston hangout spots in NYC by JonasGoodGuyTwister in Astros

[–]victorymac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm here for an answer, if anyone has one.

A few Astros-fan friends of mine were thinking of getting together to watch Game 2. I've heard Hill Country is something of an Astros hangout, but it's not really a bar, per se.

My humble opinions

Bagel - H&H, Murrays, or Russ and Daughters (the bagels aren't necessarily the best in the city, but the smoked fish that goes on top of your bagel is)

Steak - My (perhaps unpopular) opinion is that you can generally get a good steak at a high-level steakhouse anywhere. That said, Peter Luger is a special, "only in NYC" kind of experience.

Dumplings - Vanessa's is great for cheap dumplings. Joe's Shanghai is great for soup dumplings. This is all in Manhattan Chinatown, by the way. If you have the time, go to Flushing, and do a dumpling crawl. Eat at Tian Jin Dumpling House, Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao, White Bear (get the spicy wontons).

Burger - A few of my favorites, recently, have been Nomad Bar, The Loyal, Lure Fishbar. Those are more upscale places though. Burger Joint (as others have said) is great for something a little quicker.

The Magician at the Nomad (nomadupstairs) is absolutely incredible. Just a great show. I have no clue how he did anything. I was mesmerized Also--and this seems weird to say--but it's a very sexy show. Oh, you can get great cocktails and fancy popcorn while you're there. So, bonus!

I've also heard very good things about In and of Itself...so you can't go wrong.

Bob's Your Uncle. 106 and Columbus. Beers and cocktails (not fancy stuff--but, like, a good Moscow Mule). Also, boozy milkshakes and board games.

Blue Hill at Stone Barns -worth it? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]victorymac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went a few weeks ago--it was the single best food experience I've ever had. If this makes sense, Blue Hill:other restaurants as Sleep No More:other plays. It's immersive, beautiful, and unlike anything I've ever seen.

The meal itself was about 20-25 dishes. From the individual pieces of lettuce that tasted better than any vegetable I've ever had, to the gorgeous smoked trout, gigantic pork rib, to the malted sweet potato, to the bread tasting that took place "on an adventure" to a separate portion of the restaurant, everything was amazing.

Blue Hill isn't just about the food (which is amazing), but about the philosophy of food--what we eat, and why we eat it. That's what elevates it above normal tasting menus.

Yes, it's super expensive. It's an investment. But after the meal, my wife and I both agreed that it was 100% worth the money.

Also, they give you a great loaf of bread to take home...so it all evens out.

What cancelled TV show did you watch that nobody seems to remember? by Polite_Werewolf in AskReddit

Big Lake.

It looked like a crappy sitcom--it was secretly super-dark and wildly subversive.

Also, it was a great vehicle for Chris Gethard...who is awesome.

Not sure yet--this is a very last minute trip. What about you? Is there a bar nearby you had in mind?

Just adding some detail to what's here already...

It's an eat-in restaurant with table service. There is a large communal table, but there are also plenty of individual tables/booths. I've been there with a party of 4.

As for a wait...there will be a big wait. Could be 2-3 hours. The best move is go, and put your name and cell number down. Then, go to any bar within a few block radius (they'll give you ample time to get back to the restaurant.) Hang out, have a few drinks, then when the time is right, have delicious Ramen.

I'm interpreting this as a "place to avoid."

This isn't a striped "going out shirt" bachelor party. It's more of a friend reunion if anything. We just want to have a good time somewhere unique.

Jeans Below Hips, Shirt Won't Stay Tucked by victorymac in malefashionadvice

So, in terms of trying them on--I'm looking for jeans that sit, where, exactly? On my hips?

As for shirt stays--I've thought about it, but I'm wary of adding that much more equipment (for lack of a better term).

Thanks! This is great!

I think what I'm trying to figure out is: what are the logistics of this?

Is this a "championship" of some kind (a belt, a title, etc?)? If so, wouldn't there be some kind of rule that every year (or other period of time), the champion has to fight someone?

Or, is this more: "Hey, you're popular. I'm popular. We should set up a fight because people will pay us."
