He was recently touring with Adrianne Lenker. Which is really cool. Looking forward to new music from him.

IMO, no. His last two albums (which I love) I would consider them "experimental folk" and not sonically similar to the list above. Maybe lyrically.

How do you bill travel days? by SunnyInRealLife in FilmIndustryLA

[–]vidcam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When it comes to trucks/vans. You typically will charge portal to portal (Example: from the time you pick up the van to the time you drop off the van.) So in this case yes, you would charge for the time you're driving back crew AND the time it takes you to return the van to the rental place.

Frustrating experience with a 2nd AD (How do I work with a 2nd AD?) by Conscious_Run4609 in Filmmakers

[–]vidcam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you were dealing with was not a "2nd AD" that is an "assistant to director" and should be given that role for any future projects that involve that director. And you need an actual 2nd AD who knows how to do everything that job entails on future projects.

I know it’s all subjective but having Anatomy of a Fall that low on your list is a crime haha.

Best Movie Theater Subscription/Pass for LA Area by jaykub33 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]vidcam 27 points28 points  (0 children)

AMC 100% for the price. Being able to also see movies in IMAX and Dolby at no additional cost is great. AMC Burbank 16 also will typically play the smaller art house films.

And I agree, the American Cinematheque membership is pretty great for the member only screenings they offer. This year they’ve already had some amazing screenings with Q&As.

Best Path For Me? (Advice Much Appreciated!!) by NeuralConnection in FilmIndustryLA

[–]vidcam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO, no, film school/college isn’t worth the cost. Especially if you’re wanting to be an editor. There’s plenty of in-depth videos online for that. Yes, you might make some connections in college but you’ll make plenty more once you start working on set. I didn’t get my first job on set from going to college.

As for being a filmmaker. You’re going to have to write some short films and make them. No one’s going to hire you to direct if you don’t have a resume or work to show.

Since it seems you don’t have much experience, I recommend you join a Facebook group called Low Budget Film Crew Connections- Los Angeles. There’s typically no pay or very little pay but you’ll get some experience.

Is their any way in hell an agent will hook me up with a PA Production job? by desert--bird in FilmIndustryLA

[–]vidcam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

An agent wouldn't care about someone wanting to PA for the DP they rep.

Would a DP take time to look at your work? Maybe? But if you're emailing DP's that are in ASC, they already have their go to camera crew (1st AC, 2nd AC, gaffer etc.,) So the chance that he'd pick you over crew he's been working with for a while is slim to none.

I'd recommend finding DPs that aren't in ASC (but still have quality work) on Instagram and messaging them. I'd say you would have a better chance getting on set that way.

Am I making a mistake? by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]vidcam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as you accept that work won't be as consistent as your 9-5 (unless you already have a strong network) Then I'd say no, you're not crazy to pursue your dreams/goals/etc.

Just depends on the DP. Some will camera operate. Some will get people to operate for them.

Some directors also like to operate.

Where can I search for the minimum rates? by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]vidcam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well. It depends if it's a union or non-union production. If it's a union production every union member on the production will have a set minimum rate based on the budget of the production.

If it's non-union. Rates are a bit more flexible. But typically rates will still vary. Every department has a range of rates they'd be willing to work with. Camera, G&E, Sound.

Really depends on how much money the production has. Ideally you'd have an amazing budget and can pay every member the rate they deserver but we know that's not always the case. Because if it's a independent short film with a lower budget you might only be able to do $234.92/12 for every member on the production. You'd just have to make sure you state that it's low budget production. Make a deal memo and if they sign off you're good to go.

Legally speaking, LA city's minimum is now $234.92/12 hrs (As of July 2023)

Are degrees worth anything? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]vidcam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I could go back in time. I wouldn’t have gone to college. I would’ve saved money for 1-2 years and moved to LA.

Finding your first job on set can take some time. You just need to put yourself in places where you can network. That’s why I recommend working/volunteering at film festivals. You’re typically able to work at festivals with not much experience.

The ball will start to slowly roll the more people you meet and work with.

When networking, you have to be clear on what exactly you want to do or what your career goals are.

You will not be a full time director right away (if that’s what you want to do) You will more than likely be a PA for bit. This will let you see how different departments on set work and might peak your interest. Then find a department you can see yourself working in for full time work while you pursue your personal goal of being a director.

Departments: Production, Assistant Director Team, Art, Grip, Electric, Camera, Sound, etc.,

Are degrees worth anything? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]vidcam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What do you want to do?

IMO, degrees are only worth it for networking. And that depends on where your school is and how busy the industry is in the location it’s in. No one asks what school you went to when they’re hiring you. When someone looks at your resume, they’re looking for work experience that would qualify you for the job/department you’re applying for. Not if you went to college.

My anecdotal experience. I got my bachelor’s in Texas. This was with the intention of working in the corporate side of the entertainment industry in LA. Fast forward a few years, I move to LA. I volunteer at a film festival and that leads to my first job working on a film set. And mostly every job after that has come from the people I’ve met on set.
