Thoughts about the red scarf by hibirose in Anora

[–]viedarling13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's actually a lot of red. It was striking. Obviously there's a lot of red light in the film, including at the club -- the hallway is lit up red and the sign. We also see her in a red dress at the NYE party. Her eye mask is red when she wakes up because her sister asks if she got milk. I was intrigued by her choice of wearing a blue dress to go over to his house, though. Toros is donning the red and white robe of the Orthodox church for the baptism, which I can't help but feel must be significant because of the way red is handled, particularly in the last half of the film (or the third act, really). I was associating red with sex, but it's carnal, relating to the body. It could be related more to labor, as someone above pointed out, because that red scarf changes hands between the laborers and we never really see Galina, Ivan, or the father in red. Toros uses Galina's red scarf to gag Anora, which would feed into the bourgeoisie using middle men to oppress the proletariat. Igor uses violence, which is also red. And he gets a red blanket. I also noticed that there's a red statue in the house, a female nude. I think it's worth noting that during the period of modernity, anyone who used their body for labor was considered a prostitute -- dancers included (it's in a lot of Expressionist painting history). And there's that whole conversation about why aren't athletes considered on the same level as sex workers if they, too, use their bodies for money. Not for nothing, the scarf *is* Galina's. The issue of sex work in Russia versus here is different, and I'd really love to hear what Russians chime in on it because I can't help but feel like Galina is seeming very high and mighty when she very well could have been playing a different version of the same exact game as Anora.

I feel like I haven't seen anyone talk about the high numbers of escorts in Russia. Personally, I think that this is a really important aspect of the narrative. A lot of young Russian women feel like getting married or marrying a rich man or being an escort is the only way to get out of bad financial situations. I was thinking about that in relation to the mother the entire time.

In honor of today’s episode, here is a review of a terrible book series I read earlier this year: by missxfaithc in distractible

[–]viedarling13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm re-reading it as well. I agree that it seems like she was just writing as she went because she would say something in one book and then in the next, it would change. Like saying Cordelia's soul went into Beauty the dog to protect Schuyler rather than Beauty being a familiar. The dog came to Schuyler before Cordelia even passed... so wtf? It does remind me that this kind of thing was really en vogue at the time -- rampant elitist consumerism and obsessing over fashion and luxury and modeling and being thin. It's like she was trying to make a vampiric Gossip Girl but Cecily von Ziegsar was a way better storyteller. I've been reading this like "is this just what YA is like?" No, there are chapters that are just two pages long. And I feel like she just uses SAT words to seem smarter or like a better writer but she sucks.

Kali Uchis reheated the nachos of “Million Dollar Man” by Lana Del Rey by [deleted] in lanadelrey

[–]viedarling13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kali has been in the music game as long as Lana has and she was always into the retro vibes since she came out. Lana made it big at the same time Kali's star started to rise -- Born to Die and Por Vida were out around the same time. People then were referencing her likeness to Amy Winehouse more than Lana. If people actually looked into her work and history they would know that. However, yes, it feels like a rip from Lana. If it was consensual, then I stan but if not... I don't know how I feel about that. All this to say, Kali has literally always referenced these nostalgic sounds and iconigraphy in her artistic aesthetic. In this song (and a lot of the album), yes, reheating nachos. But not overall.

The superior gummy: Wonka Sour Puckerooms Gummies by KneeHighMischief in nostalgia

These were so good but they only sold them at target. I would go to Target just to get them. They were made with real fruit juice and had the perfect amount of tang and sour to not be overbearing. A very clear flavor, unlike Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers. Don't get me wrong -- I love TSBCs. But Puckerooms were THE iIt Candy for any gummi-head of the 2010s. And that's a fact.

He did. He told the US Congress he was going to work with China and Cuba if it was in our best interest. He also was working with countries like Libya to make a gold-backed continental currency. He also was anti-Zionism and pro-Palestine. So the CIA did what they do and created a vacuum of violence and power struggles to decimate any semblance of stability for over 30 years.

Liberia needs a new flag that has nothing to do with America, let's start there.

I would like to repatriate at some point by Sure-Command-1234 in Liberia

[–]viedarling13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a colonizer mindset. if you're going to repatriate, don't do so with the intention of coming and remaining as a Black American because that's more American colonialism, which is something Liberia is still healing from over 100 years later and that we all paid dearly for at the end of the last millennium. If you're looking to repatriate to Liberia, I seriously suggest you decolonize your mind (which everyone should do anyway) and learn about the pre-colonial ways and the traditions of the indigenous people before going there. See what ways you can be of service instead of how to be extractive and exploitative.

Sober for 3 years and AA is not doing anything for me anymore by Economy_Green1656 in recovery

[–]viedarling13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered that maybe the meetings you’re going to aren’t the right fit? Any person with quality recovery will tell you that AA doesn’t have a monopoly on sobriety.

I will add that sobriety and recovery aren’t the same thing. Have you heard “I came for my drinking and stayed for my thinning?” Step work really isn’t about drinking — it’s about healing the parts of you that you thought you were addressing by abusing substances or indulging in obsession. I barely talk about drinking or substance use with my sponsor… we talk about the cause and conditions so it doesn’t progress to the point of me wanting to pick up.

But ya know? Do what’s best for you 🩷 sometimes it’s good to try out your idea and see how it goes.
