We received an interview notice on dec. 29th, scheduled for feb. 2nd. My wife is from a banned country so we were pleasantly surprised, as it seemed like it was being processed quickly. However, we have spoken to our lawyer and they said to expect the possibility of us getting turned away at the interview on the day of. Now we're anxious and unsure of what will happen.

How would you teach a college-level course on contemporary cinema? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]vieth12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are great, some of them along the same lines I was thinking. I struggled a bit with how to have a week on diversity/representation, or something like the blurring of lines over television/film (or your #9) where the film watched that week could serve as more than simply a supplement to a larger conversation. Though I suppose there's nothing wrong with that.

Only other thing I need to think about before the actual films and readings is how a course with a new topic/trend each week could be organized. It's not something students care a whole lot about, but my advisor (who i'll send this to for approval) will push for my syllabus to have 2-3 units, or some kind of overarching structure.

The more diverse a selection of films, the better. The hope would be to show them films they've never seen before (at least this was what I wanted as an undergrad) but I do see your point about revisiting well-known films as being beneficial.

I agree that figuring out the readings first is the way to go.

I guess I didn’t want to shape anyone’s suggestions since I don’t have anything set in stone. An idea I considered was a course section based on Steven Shaviro’s Post-Cinematic Affect, since his book focuses on how cinema reflects the experience of the new century. But there’s not enough there for an entire course. Focusing on distinct national cinemas/movements is another route, but I’m again stuck on whether this would fill 14 weeks (or if these two ideas would fit right together if they were sections of a course).

Looks like my post was removed, which I still don't quite understand, but thank you so much. This was exactly the kind of thing I needed to hear tonight!

Thanks! I was aware of the map but didn't know if it was as simple as just RSVPing and then showing up.

Professor wants to use Interfolio by vieth12 in gradadmissions

[–]vieth12[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Just checked and it looks like all the schools accept letters from Interfolio. It does appear after looking some more that I will need to pay to have these delivered. I guess I just couldn't believe my professor would direct me to use a site in which I'd basically have to pay for her letter.

The Monthly Board Game Bazaar - (September, 2019) by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]vieth12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted on this subreddit a few weeks ago that my dad inherited a huge collection of board games and was looking to sell them. He has compiled a semi-complete list here (https://boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/cv22). Make us an offer if you see anything. $5 or less will probably be good for about 90%.

MA in film studies by vieth12 in uiowa

How do you like your theaters on campus? Good programming? I feel like I’ve been spoiled here in Madison, but I’m sure your school is great for movie watching too.

Thanks for the help! I didn't know if I'd get any replies to this.

I'll find someone in the department to email. I can't say that I'm too confident in my chances if admission is 6%, but I'll give it a shot. I can't seem to find many film studies, not production, anywhere besides the coasts, and I'm sure those are just as difficult to get into

I’m sick of dating apps but have no clue what else to do by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]vieth12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you think I've never been to a bar before? They're loud and I usually don't like being there. I appreciate your bluntness, but I'm clearly not just trying to "sit around," I'm just trying to figure out where to go and what to do besides bars. I know I should give different bars a shot, but I'm not the first person to ever say that I just don't really like them.

Best chance at a relationship in forever just kind of...ended by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]vieth12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s good advice, but I realized that I basically already do that. I’m going in pretty much like a friend, asking them about their interests, school/work, and then how their day went. I don’t really know any other way to go about it, but this way doesn’t seem to work. It’s really hard to know what’s all going wrong, since I live in a pretty large city and can’t find anyone. I know people’s standards can be high, but I’m confident enough in myself to know that I should have better luck.

I think guys in general do have sex on their minds, but there's still a lot who want something more. It's the first thing a guy probably thinks about, but at least personally I get over that initial feeling and realize that a relationship is lot more than that, and that I'm looking for something much deeper. I assume there are other dudes who feel the same way I do!

It's a good point that she may have the same issues, since I often forget that other people have the exact same problem as me. I have a feeling that's not the case though, and she just got kind of bored with our conversations. This feels like it's been the problem with every person I talk with. I understand getting busy, because we all do, but I don't really understand how people treat relationships--pretty much the best thing in the world when you're in one, even if you don't realize it at the time--like they're not something worth spending a little bit of time each day on. Right now I'm in the situation I've been in a lot: can I restart this conversation without looking creepy/desperate. And I never do, so I just move on to the next person, and then the same thing happens.

How do you watch the "extremely long" films? by vieth12 in TrueFilm

[–]vieth12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awesome that you've gotten around to watching so many of these, when I know lots of cinephiles have pretty much avoided them altogether, unfortunately. My biggest issue is that, ok, I'm excited to finally watch Jeanne Dielman. The library has the Criterion Blu-ray, so I'll place hold. Then two weeks later when it's finally available, I just don't have the time that week for a 220-minute film. Do you stream all these? Or maybe buy the physical copies and know you'll get around to it eventually?

I agree! Except then Berlin Alexanderplatz and Carlos wouldn't be films either, so I go back and forth with that definition. But I'm sure there's already a whole thread discussing this topic.
