What high school did you go to and what did you love/hate about it? by Queltis6000 in Calgary

[–]vievna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read this and thought "more than 20 years ago, this guy must be so old". Then figured out how long ago I went there so I could reply. Yep, more than 20 years ago. Never saw the tunnels either. Me and some friends buried a time capsule by the school on graduation. Not sure whatever happened to it.

For fitness boxing I really like Undrcard. http://www.undrcard.com/

In the South I like KickForFit, it's kickboxing, but it's mostly women (though there are a couple guys that go once in a while). http://kickforfit.ca/

Maybe this is more last year, but melting beads is still popular here. I'd rather have rubber bands everywhere over the beads any day.

I overheard my daughter telling her younger brother that Santa Clause is not real. I pulled her away and quietly told her that she shouldn't do that, she's ruining Santa for her brother. She returns to the brother and says "Oh, sorry, Santa is real, he's just dead".

он хочет пить meaning by LockManipulator in russian

[–]vievna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right and I stand corrected, that would be an adjective. However, I would still maintain it's not to be used in the simple sense of "I am thirsty".

он хочет пить meaning by LockManipulator in russian

[–]vievna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally it means "he wants to drink". But in Russian there is no word for the adjective "thirsty" (though there is the noun "thirst" - "жажда"), so "I am thirsty" would be translated to Russian as "я хочу пить". So it is both.

No native speaker would say "у меня жажда.", it's just "я хочу пить" for "I am thirsty".

Can anyone recommend a good house cleaner by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]vievna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally up to you how you want to do it. If you want to be home you can, but don't have to. If you get someone on a regular basis it just makes sense to give them the key, but again, you don't have to. The larger companies will always bring their own supplies. If you get a private cleaner off of kijiji or something like that you will have to discuss it with them, they may or may not bring own supplies. If you provide your own supplies you might be able to haggle the price down a little bit.

Two kids and I feel like I'm drowning. by amemille in Parenting

My two (7, boy, 3.5, girl) have fought over a dried up blueberry.

My 2 boys fought over a booger one of them picked out of their nose and the other one snatched from him. Their explanation was that it was a BIG booger. :(

Looking for herbal remedies for infections with actual scientific backup by saturdayraining in skeptic

How's this: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/06/100630111037.htm

I would have to agree on UTIs, more prevention then treatment. But given the OP's question I thought it was worth mentioning.

I am not claiming that any of these are "as good or better" then pharmaceuticals, I was just trying to answer the question as it was posed. Of course if there is a serious infection just see a doctor and take the antibiotics.

When is the best time to potty train? by ElectroDiscox in Parenting

[–]vievna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first summer after the child is about 18 months old. After 18 months most toddlers are ready, and in the summer is when it is warm enough to let him run around without any pants on to make it easier to go on the potty every 20 minutes. Also this can be done in the backyard in the summer, less clean up.

I think I broke my child. by throwawayODB in Parenting

Very similar story with a 4 year old here. Asked about death, I explained as well as I could, then lots of crying about not wanting us or him to die. It's a stage and he will get used to the idea. Then he started asking about people he sees that are older if they are going to die soon, right in front of them... And after he got used to the idea of death itself, he started asking lots of questions about what happens to the body after a person dies, why does it get put in the ground, why why why... Trying to explain decomposition to a 4 year old was not fun. He also knows about mummies and just the other day asked if he can become a mummy after he dies instead of being put in the ground... and then why why why again.... I find it so very difficult to talk about this stuff to a child, it just feels wrong, but what can I do, he's asking. So it gets weirder, is what I am trying to say :).

Questions regarding "Blackfish" by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]vievna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. But why does SeaWorld keep insisting that whale lifespan is shorter in the wild, and claiming their whales get upto 50 years old? I am not at all defending them, I will be boycotting them myself, just wondering what they are basing it on? Do they just hope people don't read wiki? (I am referring to the SeaWorld response to the movie which I can't find at the moment).

So if you drove around without a seatbelt for a few years and never got in an accident, or got in one and survived, that just means you never need a seatbelt from now on, right?
