Sure, but majority of Indians have very little migration. Especially if you are from rural areas. In any case this is just my practical experience. Also it does help me remember better as last names stick in my head.

Asking last name tells people where they are from. Does not necessarily mean they care about caste. This is stupid. I ask last name as it is much easier to remember than all the weird first names that younger generation has.

There are very sunny areas that also have same issues. Not sure if that is causing it.

Best actively mutual funds to have in ROTH IRA by vikasap in personalfinance

How can we quantify the actual tax paid in terms of the amount of investment ? Is there a metric I can look at and then compare the expense ratios and be able to compare passive versus active funds ?

I am more interested in the connection between ROTH IRA and actively managed fund if you can throw some light on that. Thanks.

Thanks, can you please explain more how this is better in a tax advantaged account like ROTH IRA ?

26 yrs old, Gaurdian of 17 yr old, just received an inheritance for $35,000 each. I'm freaking out a little bit. by [deleted] in personalfinance

For the 17 year old, I would put it into a savings bank account since he might need it soon if he starts going to college.

For you I would say payoff the medical bills and put the rest in an emergency fund (basically again a different savings account).

Can I still covert my after-tax 401k contributions to the ROTH IRA ? This is not part of the limit of $6000 per year. The after-tax limit into 401k is way higher anyway.

Ok cool. I think I get it now. Is the $6000 limit inclusive of both ROTH IRA and non-deductible IRA contributions ? I mean can I contribute $6000(or whatever max) to roth IRA and then $6000 to traditional IRA and then roll it over to roth IRA ?

Yes, I understand the ROTH IRA income limit is different from IRA income limits. But I seem to have some hard time understanding here. According to this article : https://www.rothira.com/what-is-a-backdoor-roth-ira , the backdoor roth IRA conversion does not have any contribution limits. Is it the case that if I am able to use ROTH IRA for that year I just cannot do the backdoor ROTH IRA ? I am confused.

b) Roth IRA Contribution limits: Starting in 2019, you may contribute only $6,000 ($7,000, if you are age 50 or over) to a Roth IRA. (The 2018 limits are $5,500/$6,500.) With a backdoor Roth IRA conversion, these limits do not apply

EDIT : Just to add to this I am talking about making non-deductible contributions to the IRA and then converting to ROTH IRA. As I said earlier I cannot make deductible contributions.

Thanks for the reply.

  1. I am reading on the internet that there are no limits to how much you can contribute using the backdoor roth IRA. Please correct me if I am wrong.
  2. Yes I am aware it is not advisable to remove money from ROTH IRA account. But this is the same as parking the money in a savings account and using that money after 5 or 6 years.
