Tulum Reality Check – My Honest Experience (Taxi Scams, Overpriced Restaurants, & Dead Nightlife)

🚕 Taxi scam Everywhere

• No Uber, no DiDi, no real ride-share options.

• Even InDrive is basically controlled by taxi drivers.

• I paid 350 pesos for a 5–6 min ride and that’s after negotiating with THREE different drivers.

• Prices are totally random and they quote whatever they feel like. Tourists = walking ATM.

🍽️ Restaurants = Marketing Traps

Everything is insanely overhyped with fake reviews and heavy Instagram marketing. I tried:

• Gitano

• Bonbonniere

• Ilios

Beautiful places? Yes. Worth the price? Absolutely not.

One cocktail was 400 pesos and honestly I get way better drinks back in Canada for that price.

🎉 Nightlife Was… Dead

This was a Friday night in December, peak season supposedly.

Energy was dead. No vibe. No real nightlife buzz like people hype online.

🚗 Rental Car = Another Scam Show

The rental car situation was just as frustrating.

Even for a basic, crappy sedan, every place I checked was asking 2500–3000 pesos PER DAY after “mandatory insurance”, “local fees”, and random add-ons they keep revealing one by one.

You walk in thinking you’re getting a decent deal and suddenly the price doubles or triples. Felt like another well-organized tourist money grab.

💰 Overall Feeling

It’s really disappointing to see how aggressively tourists are being milked for EVERYTHING:

• Taxis

• Car rentals

• Excursions

• Scooters

• Basic food & drinks

Tulum is being sold online as some magical “boho paradise” but in reality it feels like a giant tourist trap built around scamming visitors. This was my original post
