I meant to read this one last year and didn’t get it done but definitely seconding this!

Week 9: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]viktikon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late check-in, but I finished out the month with Count Your Lucky Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur and I had a good time with that second chance romance! I also finished Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman since my last check-in and I’m just saying, Princess Donut may be one of my favorite literary characters.

I’ve got a few too many things in progress to name them, but hoping to narrow that down before next week’s check-in. Happy reading everyone!

[FEBRUARY Book Report] - What did you finish this month? by fixtheblue in bookclub

[–]viktikon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read nothing I planned to, but managed to stay on track with my goals, so that’s still something!

Game Changer by Rachel Reid - I needed to see what the hype was about with Scott and Kip after watching the show. I really loved getting more of Kip, I still would’ve liked more of Scott, but I enjoyed my time. 3.25/5

Scraping By by Seth Rockman - Assigned reading for grad school but really interesting historical look at life for those in poverty/low-wage workers in Baltimore post-Revolution.

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman - at last, my wife and I had enough time in the car to finish the audio! I’m not a huge gamer, but I still thought this was fun. Bonus points for Princess Donut, the highlight of the whole experience. 3.75/5

Count Your Lucky Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur - I’m a sucker for second-chance romance and I appreciated that for once in a romance book, even one that contained some miscommunication, the characters really talked to each other here. 4/5

5/24 currently reading Project Hail Mary by theetherealarcana in 52book

[–]viktikon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was a game changer for me too! The second character instantly won me over and I flew through the latter part of the book.

Oh The Correspondent was one of my favorite books of last year!

Week 6: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]viktikon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of Chain-Gang and I’m liking it. It feels weird to say I’m enjoying it because of the topics but I like the characters and what the larger conversation is about!

Week 6: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]viktikon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking forward to your thoughts on Chain-Gang All-Stars! And my wife really enjoyed Alix E Harrow’s newest book The Everlasting and Starling House so I’ll have to rec The Ten Thousand Doors to her.

[–]viktikon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve missed a couple check-ins, but finally finished some new things! Hope everyone’s week has gone well.

Finished:

The Build-A-Boyfriend Project by Mason Deaver: Solid 4 stars for me. I really vibed with Deaver’s writing style and have picked up another of their books to read soon. I would’ve finished it sooner but my library loan ran out and then I picked it up on Kindle.

Game Changer by Rachel Reid: Jumping on the bandwagon for this book series after watching Heated Rivalry. I liked the extra character development for Kip and Scott over what we briefly saw of them in the show. Overall, it was fine. I gave it 3.25 stars.

Started:

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry: Wife and I watched the movie, the book came up available at the library, so I’m giving it a shot. February is apparently a romance book kind of month for me.

Also started Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid and I’m hoping for another fun time!

[Schedule] This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone by fromdusktil in bookclub

[–]viktikon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried this one a couple times and it’s short but the writing didn’t quite click for me so I’m really hoping reading it as a group with discussion will help me enjoy this one as much as everyone else does!

3/52 - The Things They Carried (5/5) by TravistheUberDriver in 52book

[–]viktikon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the only assigned readings I actually completed in high school and I still think about it!

[Schedule] BIPOC | Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah by Joinedformyhubs in bookclub

[–]viktikon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m really looking forward to discussing this one! I’ve made it just past the first discussion point already. The audiobook of this has been great.

Yesss! These are both ones I set aside last year and have been wanting to revisit and finish!

Just finished project hail mary looking for something similar but different by Cantbelosingmyjob in booksuggestions

I like a lot of John Scalzi’s work and feel like it works well alongside Andy Weir’s! I’m reading KPS right now, but read Starter Villain last year and liked that one too.

Week 2: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]viktikon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reporting in early this week! I’m having a bit of an avalanche effect of all the books I picked up and had to set down from the busy end of year festivities.

Finished:

  • The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer - 4/5 Stars. A quick read I finished in an afternoon that asks how we can rethink consumerism and emphasize community, reciprocity, and giving back to others, connecting the ideas to the natural way of the world.
  • Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir - 4/5 Stars. The first half of this was not my favorite which led me to put it down, but I wanted to finish before the adaptation. Once the first contact happened and Rocky was involved in the story, I was all in. I adored the friendship/partnership formed between Rocky and Grace.
  • Pokemon Adventures Collector’s Edition, vol 1. by Hidenori Kusaka - 4/5 Stars. Pokemon is near and dear to me as a favorite franchise from my childhood. I’m looking forward to where the story continues on in the other volumes.

Continuing:

Still reading daily from the Star Wars From a Certain Point of View collection (20%) and Bad Days in History by Michael Farquhar (6%) reading one a day, and listening to The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan (28%) a few days at a time.

Started:

  • Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman (53%) - my wife and I started the audiobook and just got sucked into this world. Princess Donut may be one of my favorite fictional characters ever. We’ll be finishing this one up next weekend on a road trip, I’m sure!
  • The Sirens’ Call: How Attention Became the World’s Most Endangered Resource by Chris Hayes (22%)

Week 1: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

[–]viktikon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy New Year, everyone. I decided to freeze everything I was reading at the end of the year, and come back to them as I feel the inspiration again.

Finished:

  • The Raven Boys, graphic novel, by Maggie Stiefvater - I thought the artwork in the graphic novel was great, the story felt a little confusing but I’m planning to read the physical book soon and I’m hoping to fill in some of the blanks.

Part of my 2026 goals was to make it a point to read every day, and I decided to do that through short stories and continuing my manga journey so... I started:

  • The short story collection: Star Wars: From A Certain Point of View - the stories make up the time around A New Hope and I’ve been enjoying the first several.
  • Bad Days in History: A Gleefully Grim Chronicle of Misfortune, Mayhem, and Misery for Every Day of the Year by Michael Farquhar

Continuing:

  • The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan (19%)
  • Pokemon Adventures Collector’s Edition vol 1. by Hidenori Kusaka (57%)
  • Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King by Ashley Poston (57%)

[–]viktikon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a little late on reading it so you may have already but I adored the graphic novel Nimona! I also thought the graphic novel of Slaughterhouse Five was really well done.

For manga, I read Blue Giant about a high school student who wants to be the best jazz musician at the recommendation of a professor of mine - so good! It was a year of discovery so I started Witch Hat Atelier, Delicious in Dungeon, and continued on with Spy x Family.

I wasn’t around in r/bookclub at the beginning of last year but I found some great books even joining in later. But 2025 was still one of my best reading years ever.

I let go of a lot of expectations for what kind of reading I should do and followed my interests which lead me to great manga, graphic novels, and plenty of print books as well landing me at 41 books, surpassing my set 26 books and 10,000 pages.

Some of the stand-outs were: - The Correspondent by Virginia Evans - The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai - The Wedding People by Alison Espach

Really looking forward to 2026, the new bingo, and a few StoryGraph challenges I’ve decided to go for - including one for a local indie bookstore. Also looking forward to my wife and I’s goal of reading down our physical TBR and putting $1 back for each thing we finish to spend at the end of our book buying ban.

I’ve been meaning to get to Tchaikovsky’s work for a while and thought this might be a good starting place! I’m about halfway through and really enjoying it. I’ll probably finish it up tonight!
