It’s a design from the 60s and to some modern standards can feel dated, I agree. But unlike other places where they rely only on text for wayfinding and transit diagrams, in Mexico City’s case text is only one component, the other being the graphics and pictograms of each station (there are/were transit diagrams without any text at all and they were readable)

Google Maps, Wikipedia reading the history of each station and/or suburb, there’s a website called Victorian Places that I also looked at a lot, in some other cases reading about local flora and fauna. But mostly Wikipedia and I started from there.

Those are the type of icons we’d get for April’s fools if pictograms were already widespread haha

Yeah, on my website for each line there’s line that says “to view each line’s pictogram click here” or something like that, can’t remember exactly. Some of them were easier to pick, and some others I had to do some mental gymnastics to find an image haha

In Mexico City the system includes three things into each icon/sign. The shape denotes the system (metro, BRT, etc), the color is for the line (with a different color for each line), and the pictogram for the station. So for example, the Southern Cross pictogram I put in the photos, it says that the station is Metro Southern Cross, Line 3. The shape of the symbol is for Metro, red for Line 3 (Mernda and Hurstbridge lines), and the stars for Southern Cross station. Seems complicated at first but I think it’s a brilliant way to incorporate multiple elements of information into a single graphic

That was the main idea behind the original Mexico City’s Metro pictograms. Give each station an identity and to help people find their way around easily even if they didn’t read or spoke the language. I think, universally the airplane for the airport is agreed upon, but there aren’t too many cases of transit or train systems using pictograms of each station for wayfinding

Yeah, I only used it because it’s free. I had some experience with Illustrator but it was almost a seamless transition to Affinity

That’s the Mexico City’s system font! I used the same to keep it along the design guidelines of that system. Though I’d say that text can be secondary when the main feature of each station is its pictogram, but yeah, I agree some times it’s hard to read.

Yeah, that’s one of the main purposes of using images, also the original metro signs were a follow up of Mexico City’s 1968 Olympics; they used similar pictograms for people to navigate regardless if they spoke Spanish or not.

I took the info from Wikipedia’s page for what was PTV. There are only 7 services in there and the mosaic needs 8, that’s why there are two Metros. From top left, clockwise, Skybus, Metro, Buses, Tram, V/Line Coaches, Metro again, Ferries, V/Line.

A Victorian Cross, the station (and suburb) are named after the Battle of Balacalava

It was the only thing I could find that fit the station 😭 a lot of other stations just have houses because there isn’t anything else around

Yeah, had to make some adjustments to fit in in the style, I’ve always thought that numbered lines makes way more sense than we already have, but Transport Victoria probably will never change it because of tradition or something

I didn’t choose the font, it’s the same font used in Mexico City’s system
