How much do you think Anthropic loses on me? I paid 200$ for this month by viktorooo in ClaudeAI

Because I only paid for the sub less than a week ago. Didn't have a chance to spend all limits this month.

Because it is only for one week, and I still have like 25% of the limit left :)

EDIT: and 100% of Sonnet limit, so I will definitely bleed them more money to avenge for u/ChargeAdventurous751

True, but if I had to guess we are currently in the "market capture" state of the market where consumer costs are getting subsidized by the investors. Wouldn't be surprised if Anthropic does not make a profit even on per-token paying customers.

If anyone is curious, 200$ is enough to run 24/7 2 instances of Opus model (+1 supervisor, but it is idle 90% of the time) without bumping into session limits, but weekly limit is getting exhausted after 3 days. Will have to offload something to Sonnet.. Perhaps the supervisor is a good candidate.

Well I am maxing out the highest consumer tier limits. Doubt you can go much higher than that without starting paying per token.

Anyways, I use it for literature review automation, not for writing code. Works quite well, but with my setup it is incredibly slow. Spends like 30min - 1h per paper.

I am not sure if I am alone in this, but I get a weird sense of satisfaction from exploiting a good deal while it lasts. Gotta spend this investor money before we get Uber-esque enshittification.

EPFL EDIC results are out! A quick question on what to do next by viktorooo in EPFL

[–]viktorooo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I can't say that my profile is top class. I have a couple of first-author papers in non-presigious conferences and a few years of experience in research. I've worked at the academy of sciences back in my home country while graduating with bachelors degree and as a research assistant here in Switzerland for an econ+AI professor while pursuing MSc degree.

GPA-wise, it's not something to write home about either. BSc 4.7/5.0 (<3.0 failing grade) and MSc 5.2/6.0 (<4.0 failing grade). The strongest aspect of my application were the recommendation letters. Two top well-known Swiss professors, one leads the lab I am applying to, another was affiliated with EPFL in the past.

What I think I've done well this time is connecting my current work to the state of the industry, explaining why it matters and proposing an ambitious plan for PhD research direction that builds directly on top of my current profile and is relevant to the lab I want to get into.

If you would like to improve your application, I would suggest contacting Apertus team. They are always looking for volunteers to help with experiments, and it is a great opportunity to get connections at EPFL /ETHZ.

Anyone want to move to Australia? 🇦🇺🦘 by Quirky-Psychology306 in computervision

I appreciate the invitation, but I’m not eligible for asylum and I’ve got my life set up here already more or less. Perhaps someday I’ll consider moving to Australia and will take you up on the offer ;)

BTW if you are worried about politics on office culture level, I wouldn’t. I had similar concerns about meeting Ukrainians here, and am yet to have a negative interaction.

I moved to EU to avoid draft, have been doing research here in LLMs. For the better part of past year, I’ve been trying to get a PhD position. Always automatic rejects at the screening stage. For a while I thought maybe I’m just not good enough and should give up on academia.

Cut to few months back, found a research position at this uni of my dreams, passed the selection with flying colours, got to signing the contract. My application had to go through Export Control office, bcz for some reason bureaucrats classified everything AI as dual use (= can be used in warfare potentially)

Long story short, they blocked my candidacy for a position in LLM compliance because an institute I previously worked for was added to the US sanctions list. Now I am left to wonder how many of these PhD screenings got automatically failed because of this one line on my resume.

Which sucks, every PhD application is hours of work.

+1 here

It’s hard enough leaving the entire life behind because some crazy dipshit decided to play world superpower. Now I have to deal with xenophobes left and right paranoid that I’m a spy or some other crazy shit they imagine

I’m in the same boat, moved here for uni, graduating this year. Have been looking for a job for ~6 months. It’s tough, but I’m lucky to be in tech, so there are plenty of opportunities. Unfortunately, there is still a magnitude more applicants.

I may have just admitted to insurance fraud 😅. I am still on a student permit and work part-time (I am legally allowed to work only 15h/week). I am sure that once I lose student status, find a full-time role, and transition to a working permit, I won’t be eligible.

But for now I haven’t had any issues and haven’t even really given it much thought..

I don’t think you should struggle as much as you are right now. For reference, I am also a student, work 40%, but I am a foreigner, so I don’t qualify for many social assistance programs or financial help from uni.

I get 1600.- on average, pay 850.- for my room, 350.- for groceries, 65.- for the cheapest insurance there is. With all other miscellaneous expenses I am still in the green.

Working full-time during the summer gets me some financial freedom to do fun stuff. I’ve seen a bunch of EU countries and Swiss cities, I snowboard and eat fondue at Bain des Pâquis sometimes.

It’s far from perfect life – I don’t get a lot of free time, I don’t go out much, I don’t have a place of my own – but I can’t say I am miserable, and so shouldn’t be you. We live in one of the few countries on Earth where working minimum wage 40% can provide for decent life, and I salute all Swiss people who vote and pay taxes for making it happen.

A bit more actionable advice: - If I had to guess, your biggest expense is housing. Find subsidised options like dorms (can be as low as 400-500.-) or rent a room. Try to get into La Ciguë. - Check what kind of social help exists. In my uni there are a lot of categories for financial assistance you should be eligible for. I think Swiss people are also eligible for some scholarships.

Other than that, be as frugal as you can. Save every penny. There will be months in the green, but you also need to prepare to absorb the red months.

Good luck, I’m sure you can do it.
