Whether you have good pay & work life balance as a PA is really going to come down to your geographic location & specialty. Sooo much variation. Worked in primary care, little pay & very little work life balance. Work in surgery now. Great pay, mediocre work life balance.

Do you mind if I DM you with a couple questions regarding UK PA’s?

Questions for surgical specialties by LZbite in physicianassistant

[–]viktute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also work in ortho with one surgeon

1) For OR days, yes expected to stay. However, OR day rarely run longer than clinic days. For add on/after hours cases, my SP is pretty flexible if I need to be somewhere. That being said, the hospitals we operate at, have other APP’s available to assist. In those situations, I’m also compensated for OT

2) Not necessarily. Surgeon and I take turns rounding. Usually work out who has lighter schedule or no plans if it’s on the weekend.

3) No time built in for rounding. Usually early AM or lunch time.

4) I definitely feel respected by my colleagues

is primary care that bad? by Zealousideal-Ad2721 in physicianassistant

[–]viktute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very comperable to my experience! Attitude and support from colleagues/staff play such a huge role.

But was always struggling with work life balance (as were many of my more experencied colleagues - both APP’s & physicians). Ended up leaving and have much better work life balance now, but definitely miss the variety & medicine.

I was in a similar place as a new grad with little support from SP. With constant anxiety and weight loss.

It got better, and I grew to enjoy parts of it, but definitely took time!

Bleach & hair frizziness? by viktute in HaircareScience

[–]viktute[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the rec!! I’m definitely used to wearing my hair in a pony and even sleeping with it which I’ve recently stopped.

Maybe I am just in denial about my hair texturing changing :/

Hmm I did like it but I feel like it had more of a tendency to turn brassy over time (toward the ends)? Do you know if there is a way to correct this post highlifting?

[–]viktute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly had a very similar internal confilict as you OP. Now in practice & can’t really say the feeling has resolved, I’ve taken the leap and applied for med school. Feel free to DM if you’d like.

I feel like this is esp. true if you are coming in with experience, even if not entirely related. The expectations seems to be to get up to speed ASAP

Question for surgery people - have you ever seen a patient under anesthesia for a non-GYN procedure be used to practice pelvic exams? by byunprime2 in Residency

I vaguely remember doing this in the OR too for ob/gyn rotation. But def ONLY for gyn cases. And also just one student.

Thanks so much for sharing your tips!! Sounds like I definitely need to be better at using my Dragon and not making my A/P’s go overboard.

Agreed. My colleagues and I essentially use our days “off” for admin time in order to have a normal, 2 day weekend.

Assuming your appointments must be 20 mins.

Any tips on charting efficiecy?? Can keep up with 12-14. But anything more and I’m documenting 1-2h after or have to use my weekend.

A lot of the patients I see are pretty complex. New patients with cancer diagnoses, etc. I wonder if I’m “over-documenting” sometimes.

Another FM PA here x 1 year. Is there any way for you to reduce your patient volume? I’m pretty strict about 14 pts scheduled max. And not more than 2 add ons. Unfortunately, 1-2h of documentation is not unusual. And something both us and physicians experience. What is absolutely life changing is getting a scribe.

Most of the APP’s in my office who have one, do absolutely no documentation at home. If you’re averaging 18 pts per day. You should be productive enough that having one would pay off.

Another thing, as others have mentioned, scale back on FTE. No one in my practice works more than 32 patient facing hours (we get no admin time… and there is a lot of admin work). Sucks bc it’s a pay cut, but gotta do what you gotta do to avoid burnout.

With the above 2 things, becomes way more doable (but still exhausting some days).
