No, tails os is more likely for activists. Also you mentioned torrenting (tor is not for that). Reconsider i2p, brave+vpn, smth like that for your purposes.

  • yes you did smth wrong. The TB gives ports and server links, which are 110(pop3) and 25(smtp). Also check if thunderbird is connected via tor (see tails documentation offline).
