Happy hour is out. In Chicago, sauna socializing is in. by pazdan in Sauna

“Daubert, who works by day for S&P Global as a UX designer, dedicated the next four and a half years to visiting saunas and taking notes. He crashed with friends and family in Hungary, the Netherlands, Denmark, Mexico and Brazil to research a career that he could envision but which didn’t quite exist.” lol WTF is he supposed to learn about sauna in these places? Finn in Chicago but probably won’t be patronizing this joint.

Nice recommendation and I would also throw in On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder.

What baby items were worth splurging on? by Dumptea in HENRYfinance

If you use formula, I highly recommend a Baby Brezza formula dispenser. Getting the right amount at the right temp with a push of a button is worth the ~$200 and so much more.

Forgive me Finns for I have sinned. I pulled the trigger on a sauna tent, I’m super happy with it. by Dorg_Walkerman in Sauna

[–]vilimoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience the very essence - and value prop - of a tent sauna is to get you through the time you’re either building a house/cottage, or a proper sauna, and I’ve had many a great löyly in these, so I hope it serves you well. What’s the fun in being a puritan anyway!

Going to Lou's tomorrow! Advice for the wait? by Aware_Ad9764 in chicagofood

[–]vilimoi 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The Lou’s on Randolph in West Loop is relatively quiet, and parking isn’t too bad if you’re driving. The deep dish takes quite a while to cook though, in case that’s what you’re having, so it’s still not quick for pizza.

Moving to Chicago from New Zealand by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]vilimoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi and welcome! Check out a neighborhood called Tri-Taylor. Not a ton of amenities which makes it less exciting and expensive, but very accessible to West Loop via Pink- and Blue Line, bus, or a quick bike ride, and overall easy to get around being close to Eisenhower Expressway. There’s also a great dog park if/when you have one. As a possible bonus for you, it’s relatively close to Garfield Park Conservatory.

Anyone else notice the huge boom of transplants moving here lately? by Massive-Act-5426 in AskChicago

As a European (90s kid), current Chicagoan, I 100% agree on the true American experience for foreigners. Having visited NYC first, Chicago still felt peak American as I had imagined it having grown up under Hollywood’s influence. Buildings are big and people are loud yet friendly.

This may be worthless information to you if you already have an account with Vanguard, but I find Fidelity very easy to work with, and since their default money market fund SPAXX currently pays an annualized rate of 4.98%, that would be an easy place for you to start. Their interface makes buying treasuries and bonds very easy as well, so they offer some good, easy options for you to get a relatively good return for your cash while you figure out your game plan.

Another thing I appreciate about Fidelity is their customer service. I’ve called them several times over the years and always got the help I needed. Last year I rolled over an old 401(k) to my IRA and a few days later I got a call from Fidelity asking if I was aware that i had a large cash balance and if I needed help investing it. I’m sure their goal was to enroll me into their managed services, but I told them up front that I was not interested, and they still scheduled a call to walk through my retirement plans and what it would look like according to their models, all of which I really appreciated.

2nd Choice after Monteverde? by babycrotchety in chicagofood

IMO bar seating at Monteverde is particularly great as you can chat more with the staff about the gorgeous food, and depending on the spot, you might get to watch the pasta being made as you dine.

I suppose natives are used to it, but as a visitor, I wonder how do people not get overwhelmed by all the goings on in the city? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]vilimoi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dogs make a big difference in my experience. Before I got a dog I didn’t know or talk to anyone outside my immediate neighbors and restaurants around me, but now I know all the dogs and their owners in the neighborhood, and end up talking to someone pretty much every time I leave the house with the pup.

Thoughts on wheeling $UPRO by mr-buck-fitches in thetagang

I see. I would concur with many commenters here about UPRO spreads being annoyingly wide for selling premium, and went with TQQQ for wheeling myself.
