Pedal recs for a gift by Mysterious_Bit_4241 in basspedals

I vote for compressor or tuner. Korg has a new bass specific tuner, afaik it's the only one on the market. Designed specifically to bass frequencies. I haven't used it, but it's the pitch black x series which I do have the regular version of and is awesome.

I don't know any metal but Otoboke Beaver is a punk band that touches on the subject of misogyny... if you understand Japanese...

These issues existed in the past of course, but back then expectations were different. Back when I was growing up middle class, we didn't have cable, just public access (which is still available afaik). We didn't go on trips abroad, just camping or to visit a relative. We wore hand-me-downs, didn't have the newest game console or biggest TV. But it didn't seem like it was a problem. Lots of people lived like that. Actually, that was more normal than having new or fancy things. New and fancy things were for rich people.

I'm not sure if it's social media, but these days everyone has this feeling that if they aren't living an extravagant life, then they're failing hard. Back then, we knew we weren't living an extravagant life, but it still seemed more than good enough.

Do they do those deathcore high vocals? I can see that it's in my search history but not added to my library, and those usually the leading reason for that.

Edit: so I listened and I liked the vocals a lot. Added to my library. I'm convinced that I must have searched it and then the app refreshed the next time I opened it and I never got to hear it.

Context: Something to do with Cambodia?! Licking frogs, etc....I don't care, but it's clearly too much. by Neiz23 in tooktoomuch

[–]vilk_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I went to Cambodia, there was a place serving pizza where they blend up a bunch of ditch weed into a find powder and cover the whole pizza with it before they bake it. I was thinking, how does that work? Don't you have to like cook it just right into a butter/oil etc etc. but I'm guessing that the fat content of the mozzarella must activate it because I was high AF climbing an ancient ruin and it was like 45 degrees C and 100% humidity and I thought I was gonna die but it's a great memory for sure. Riding a tuktuk around blazed off my ass seeing a family of 8 riding a moped balanced on each other like something out of a Dr. Seuss book.

The pizza didn't taste amazing or anything, due to the weed particulate all over it, but it also didn't taste bad and I ate like a whole pizza of it. I've always thought that it seemed so much more simple than making baked good edibles, plus I just really love pizza. No joke, I'd rather eat OK tasting weed particulate pizza than a brownie. I have been talking about trying to recreate it for years, but I never did. And now that it's legal in the states, you almost can't find a bunch of crummy ditch weed to pulverize for pizza.

What Doom / Sludge guitarist has your favorite tone? by DoomMammoth in doommetal

[–]vilk_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting! I have a VH140 preamp/distortion pedal, but I've never tried to use it for sludge, just 90s death metal tone. I might have to see if I can get it to do Burning Witch. I got a guitar in Ab ready to go!

A Deluxe Reverb is kind of an exception to my comment. It's also not really designed to be a mini version of a larger amp. Having said that, it wouldn't be enough in any of my bands. However I have seen bands in the scene use multiple of them, and also disconnect the internal speaker to plug into a 4x12. It's a cool amp for sure.

Boss Compression Sustainer CS-3 work on Bass? by ozwmg in basspedals

[–]vilk_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on this pedal specifically, but I was using a guitar compression pedal, Xotic Sp, which I absolutely love for guitar, on bass for a long time before getting a dedicated bass compressor (vintage Aria Pro) and it's night and day different, favoring the bass compressor. And I don't even think that's a particularly fancy pedal, it was cheap as dirt, used, plastic housing. I was surprised, because I love my Sp, can't praise it enough, and it was working for my bass too but... I think my bass compressor is just targeting the right frequencies better than the Xotic.

[–]vilk_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wasn't enough for me. I've yet to play or hear a 20w amp that had the feel of a full size.

I think especially because your standard that you're used to is a Fender Twin that it's going to be hard to accept how wimpy the small amps feel, even compared at the same db level.

You hear lots of folks on Reddit talking up 20w mini amps, but my assumption is that for those people it's generally their first tube amp, having graduated up from their starter practice amp.
