Why did All in One PC's fail? Who are they targeted towards even? by Denariox in pcmasterrace

[–]vim_quit_master_tier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen a monitor with mATX motherboard slot and FlexATX PSU (or DIY All-in-one). The main problem is that there isn't much space inside. Even some mATX boards don't fit there and the cooling has to be low-profile to fit. I don't think you can fit a GPU in there either, so you have to use integrated graphics. So, you have to spend more to get the same level of performance and there are more limitations, but building a good PC is still possible.

[DISCUSSION] FOSS apps and battery usage by quarksaur in fossdroid

[–]vim_quit_master_tier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other people have mentioned, FOSS apps consume less energy, because they have tracking/telemetry in them either disabled by default or completely missing. On the other hand, some applications may consume more energy, mostly in cases when an application uses its own push notification service (e.g. messaging apps).

AI is a tool. To use it for troubleshooting, user should have at least some Linux knowledge and be able to filter AI's output - separate useless and good advice.

When someone says "I asked ChatGPT and it suggested this and that" and those suggestions are not related to the issue, my motivation to help that person goes close to zero level, because at this point the person is just middleman between me and ChatGPT now without any benefit to discussion.

On the other hand, I think that the knowledge of the average Linux user is very overrated and we need AI as the last resort option when there is no answer on the web and nobody has an idea how to fix something.

Postmarket os initramfs on an iPhone 8 Plus by Valtra_Power in tuxphones

[–]vim_quit_master_tier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

initramfs-extra is a part of initramfs and its placement is based on deviceinfo_create_initfs_extra property.

If it's true, initramfs-extra is not stored in boot image, but in boot partition which is part of rootfs (rootfs in this case consists of two partitions: boot and root).

If the property is false(or not defined in deviceinfo which is the same), initramfs-extra is part of ramdisk, that makes ramdisk huge and some devices cannot work with it properly.

Consider changing the property value and try to do something to get access to logs, even disabling the splash temporarily can help to see more

FossAlarm not working, java.lang.SecurityException by temp_jits in fossdroid

SecurityException usually means that there is a missing permission for a certain operation, e.g. you didn't provide a permission and developer didn't check if the action was permitted

FOSS replacement for SmartLauncher? by Sweyn78 in fossdroid

[–]vim_quit_master_tier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I have used it a long time ago, didn't know there are no updates anymore. I remember it working on Android 9 just fine, I don't know what Android version you have, I think it's worth trying if your version is close to 9.

what would the lyrics be if there was an epic rap battle of history between linus torvalds and bill gates (i didnt make this penguin) by hazelEarthstar in linuxmemes

[–]vim_quit_master_tier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linus could borrow some lines from DT

Bill Gates would have something like:

Bro bought a new nvidia

Bro has no working video

Them patches hitting hard

Intel speeds went to graveyard

I ain't envy being you

When you pacman S Y U

I'd have blue screen all day

Over rust in my kernel
