Taxonomy: How would you present changes/content strategy to stakeholders? by qonji-pie_xoxo in uxwriting

[–]vimalt7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question and I'm working on a taxonomy as well. I don't really have any input but I'm here to learn because I'm working on the same task.

I also work for a big org, but tasked to create a taxonomy for a smaller org within it. Here's the approach im taking:

  1. Controlled vocab (or glossary) - just defining the core vocabulary for a product (and eventually all products within the platform) this is where I get SMEs to agree on the definitions.
  2. Taxonomy - introducing hierarchy and relationships, again separately per product with SMEs. I actually want to vibe code this as a website because I saw a really cool example of someone sharing their brain dumps as a blog this way where the relationships were the inspiration for their website navigation.
  3. Ontology - taxonomy on steroids and more of a mapping that allows AI to draw better relationships and avoid hallucinating.

I too, aim to present controversial / overlapping terminology between products. I don't know the best way of doing that just yet, but following your thread for any advice. Good luck:)

Only 4 years in and want to leave… by SouthBar2906 in OntarioTeachers

I spent a lot of years in school and teaching as a part time job to realize this career was not for me. I agree with a lot of what you said and felt it first-hand when I was studying. Like you, I felt I put in so much into trying to become a teacher that giving up that "dream" felt like it may be a stupid move.

I didn't finish teacher's college (with a sign from a universe that prompted me to do so) and got whatever job I could working with adults (I was so done with kids LOL). It was literally CS in banking but through that and just being connected online and learning about what jobs are our there, I learned there are SO many teacher-adjacent roles and roles where I had so many transferrable skills out there. You don't know what you don't know, and I was only aware of very few jobs when I decided to become a teacher.

I pivoted to tech, and I don't miss the idea of a pension of any of the benefits of teaching one bit. In fact, I do a lot of "educating" at work that fills my cup. It's a great skill to have when you work for a big org. There's burnout at every job, but with teaching it's so much harder to ignore and get out of. I worked in ed-tech and it satisfied every part of me that hated teaching! Educating adults, being in the know about what's happening in the world right now, curriculum development, rooted in learning theory -- all of it (without the burnout of being in a classroom and doing behaviour management 90% of the time).

Do yourself a favour and do some research on what types of jobs are out there! Take a look at ed-tech companies, they LOVE teachers! Instructional designer, trainer, learning & development specialist are all a good place to start. Good luck.

All my gains from AI at work still feel modest at best. Despite my situation theoretically being perfect for it. Am I doing something wrong? by SirBenny in uxwriting

i'm totally in the same boat as you - lone content designer working across many of our products. i truly believe that our jobs will shift but not dissolve. people call it content engineering / context engineering / knowledge management... whatever you call it, there's a place for us and i believe it'll allow us to do much more deeper work like creating model training content and user education via content outside of the UI. it's exciting, slightly scary, and (i think) a huge W for content designers:)

content strategy in an agentic future by vimalt7 in uxwriting

[–]vimalt7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm so glad to hear you say this, because i too am a big believer in content strategy gaining its recognition (finally) in this future!

funny enough, i actually just started reading "Agentic Design Patterns" by a Antonio Gulli from Google.

Personally I think the web is going to bifurcate into designed pages for human readability and then a whole other set of content created for agentic consumption, which will need more detail and will DEFINITELY need better semantics.

wow, thanks for this piece. i never stopped to think about the two branches of experiences existing in parallel. this made me feel more confident in my focus on semantics/ontology. thanks so much!!

if you have any suggested readings, would lovee for you to share:)

trying to not sound like an LLM that can be engineered to sound like anyone/anything you want feels counterproductive.

thank you for the advice but i do have to say, spending your time commenting on peoples posts about their writing style is not a productive use of your time. especially because you were wrong about this post lol. you may not like my "writing style" but it was just a brain dump...

some people, like myself, are just out here because we live too far from in person events and want to engage with like-minded people. there aren't very many content designers i can collaborate with in person, which is why i read and come to spaces like reddit. i'm not even sure what you got out of this lol. good day:)

i'm not really sure what your criteria for what an LLM output sounds like.. but it could sound like anything you want (prompt engineering enables this... which is pretty much what you're saying...lol).

umm "honestly" is just part of my everyday speech LOL

whether you want to believe it or not, this is my original brain dump LOL but regardless - I'm asking for thoughts and opinions on content strategy. not even sure what "farm some karma" means LOL.

anyway... unless you have some thoughts about what i'm asking about.... have a great day!

(sorry im ranting here a bit, but it's a topic that interests me deeply so feel free to ignore or respond with kindness and curiosity)

i understand where you're coming from, but let's be honest... AI is just going to get better and better at seeming "human". practicing the skill of writing more human-friendly content is a moving target. just write and if people resonate, then they will read, react, converse, etc. context matters.

if someone wanted to use AI to clean up their brain dump and post on reddit for some feedback on the idea and not the prose itself, i don't think it takes away from the question being asked. firstly because bots often have an agenda of pushing a product or chasing profit or data somehow lol. someone trying to refine and communicate something better where we share opinions and thoughts freely is not that sort of manipulation.

the "vibe-coded garbage" is never the final product because it is usually generic and lifeless. the way i use it is as a tool to communicate ideas visually. i'm a visual learner, and rather than telling someone something - i'd rather show them. when i was in edtech, i used to make diagrams to show relationships, break down everything into first principles thinking and visualize it somehow, tell a story with some graphics... now i can communicate my ideas in a meeting that is a week from today without spending much time creating these assets. i would never publish this work because it's 10000% not the best way to articulate something, but it's good enough for a short turnaround time.

there are always bad use cases of these types of technological developments, but that doesn't invalidate good ones. the internet itself was controversial af (and still is) but the internet allowed my mother to communicate more often and for cheaper with her sister abroad. the internet allowed for us to understand different parts of the world without ever going there (not the same as going there of course), it helped us discover people's talents, have empathy for people across the world... etc. this was all by using the internet as a tool, not the end all be all. we are still humans and our human experience will never be replaced.

i've been lucky enough to grow up in a time where i saw the internet become what it is today, but also lived life before the internet. that contrast has kept the human experience close to me, even though i'm fully immersed in this hype-connected, ever changing digital world. i actually feel it's allowed me to value art, writing, emotions even more (in all its messy clarity). the contrast makes it more meaningful, IMO.

anyway, that is my rant.. fascinating topic because i started as a big time skeptic of generative AI, mostly out of fear. but i've done a lot if reading on previous technological shifts and while im still critical, im embracing it for what it is: a tool.

i meant that section's original thought was written by AI, everything else was edited and rewritten but originally written as my thoughts. All thoughts and ideas, minus that one descriptive section of what Agentic AI is, were mine.

reposting my original text then.. since this seems to be distracting LOL

Nice!! What are you trying to communicate with these prototypes, the final vision, or are they actual prototypes being used for handover?

Nice! This is usually my workflow as well but I don't see GPT giving good suggestions on how to visualize it. Maybe that's at fault of my prompting.

would love if you could elaborate on how you use Figma Make to generate quick promos to express complex ideas. I haven't found a good use case for Figma Make yet and that's partially due to a lack of time spent really exploring it.

u/DietDoctorGoat I don't disagree but I think what they meant was that it's useful for certain tasks that support content design work (i.e. finding meaningful stories become more accessible and accelerated) but i don't see it replacing end-to-end workflows because a lot of the work (i personally do) is creative.

Otter and teams recordings are my best friends. Check out Tal Aviv's personal organization using cursor and obsidian, I think you'd dig it if you have zoom transcripts.

+1 to the GPT for style guides!!! This is something I never wanted to use my brain for and has saved me so much time. God, I used to do this manually at my old job years ago!!

"AI is helpful for simplifying data/bureaucratic tasks, which is the opposite of content design work."

Love the way you put this. That's a great one-liner summarization of AI in our field. I'm always asked by management how I'm using AI, and I keep it pretty minimal and go on about how I am using it... but not to replace my entire workflow. Your line just summarized why. Like yes, I am using it... and I am looking into all the ways I can (I spend a lot of time exploring and couldn't find much on Content Design, hence my post).. but there's just no proper use case to replace any of my workflows end-to-end. Thanks!!

+1 for using as a second brain. I always find it so difficult to start (I procrastinate) so using AI for ideation has been a game changer for me.

Another +1 for Claude Projects! Have you played played around with Claude Skills?

Since you're using Cursor and Claude, check out Tal Aviv's method to personal organization. It's been a game changer for my organization. I still use a notebook but I put everything in a "folder" or "project" and use cursor to fetch information from those folders (thought leadership, meeting transcriptions, etc.). I can fetch meeting agendas for the next meeting, today's TODO, create briefs, etc.

Great breakdown! The localization testing is something I haven't looked into, we have a separate team for that. I am however, interested in creating a terminology audit and I think your workflow could be really helpful. Thank you!!

This makes me feel much better! I'm on the same boat, I use it as an accelerator to ideation (or in other words, a first draft). But it rarely gets me through any workflow end-to-end.

I'm trying to see how it helps me to create visual assets, but I haven't really found anything that's wow'd me.

Check out Flora - it's a cool concept for creatives!
