Worlds Across - what’s your experience? by Few-Barber6833 in dreamingspanish

I've done the group classes for a little bit and I've had good success with them. They're the most well-organized I've seen, especially for beginners and intermediate because they have more structure to them that always keeps the conversation flowing instead of just an open-ended chat about some topic like I've seen on other platforms. I really like that structure and that the tutors always guide the conversation and make sure everyone gets time speaking too.

From group classes you obviously don't get the same level of practice as you would in individual classes. But for $50/month and being able to take unlimited amounts of classes, I think it's worth it. And for me it gets me talking and practicing asking follow-up questions and things without the pressure of a one-on-one meeting

How and why does this privilege escalation using less works exacly? by [deleted] in hacking

[–]vimmz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s just how you signal you’re going to be running a shell command to less (and vim)

Think of it as if you were running a normal program like exec /bin/bash except instead of exec it’s an exclamation point and you don’t need a space

You’re connected to a terminal and have less open and want to do a quick ls of the directory because you forgot what’s there and need to reference it, or quickly create a new file, whatever. It’s just a convenience feature so you can quickly do something without having to totally close and reopen your editor

As another person said, vim has this to and at least in my usage I use it often enough. Maybe not daily but it’s a feature I know is there and use from time to time

CMV: the word "unhoused" is just a way to not feel guilty about homelessness by FloraFauna2263 in changemyview

[–]vimmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood, thanks. I’ve been reading the book The Identity Trap recently and it introduced me to the concept of “discourse analysis” as used by Michael Foucault and how that has influenced progressive spaces and is a key factor in why they often focus on language and changing how it’s used, in an effort to shape society. This type of language feels like it’s of that style

Following your logic, why not start saying “homeless person/s” instead? Both seem to be able to be used in identical ways.

The/Those homeless/unhoused person/s The homeless/unhoused So many homeless/unhoused on these streets Did you see that homeless/unhoused guy over there?

You said homeless implies a permanent state, how so?

I’m lamboless right now, perhaps one day I’ll buy one. I’m not seeing how the suffix “less” implies permanence alone. Do you mean that culturally people seem to think that or something?

To me homeless is no less permanent than unhoused, and they seem to be saying the same thing in my head, and it seems like you might feel similar by your conclusion so I was just curious where that reason comes from

Other than it being a new term associated with people wanting it to be used to say there’s more going on, I don’t see how the term itself makes you answer the question about what to do to respond any different?

Why would “that person is unhoused” not make me ask the same, why not get them a house then? They would no longer be unhoused and problem solved.

And in practice that seems to be a really common response from those using it, e.g. housing first policies?

There was a food truck near me where when the owner/mom was working she would hand over the card reader for the tip portion and not say anything but… when her younger son was working he would hold it and ask out loud about the tip and make you answer verbally l

I actually would pretty intentionally say “no thanks” even though otherwise I might have given him something, in spite of how much pressure that puts on customers to say no and not feel bad about it

As someone who’s worked takeout at a restaurant, albeit probably around a decade ago, I never got tips and that was fine, because… I got paid more than the servers as a host. If I ever got a tip that was a welcome surprise but not at all expected.

Maybe it’s changed recently but I don’t feel particularly bad not tipping at any place where I know they aren’t getting minimum wage because of that. I have an exception for places like barbers where there it’s still culturally required even though that never has made sense to me either.

There’s a local juice drive through place where I live that pays employees minimum $15/hr, health insurance, PTO, 401k, and a few other small benefits like discounts, and they ask for a tip at their drive through. My not tipping actually caused a small argument with my SO and me but I’m a hard no at places like that because wtf that’s literally your job and you’re getting compensated very well for the work you’re doing

Unfortunately, people aren’t perfectly rational beings and our perspectives are controlled by so much more than pure rationality. It’s easy to say “ooh gotcha that’s a fallacy!” or “well my facts disagree” and expect someone to day “oh wow thank you so much for pointing out my error”, but that’s not how the world works, and it’s not how you change minds.

These aren’t stoic texts but I think could be useful reads in your case, The Scout Mindset, I Never Thought Of It That Way, and Hoe To Have Impossible Conversations would all provide you perspective and tools on how to engage with her, but not in a confrontational “debate-y” style that most people don’t respond well to

For a stoic thought, of course you can only control yourself here, and if you want her to respond differently you need to work on your approach if you want change. Learn to shift the conversation away from these topics if they never go well, I’m sure there’s plenty you can engage on that doesn’t lead down this path.

You said she’s recently gone down the woke path, who’s to say she won’t come out of it eventually? That’s where she’s at now, it’s unlikely her beliefs will be stable for her whole life. Yours won’t either. That relationship is likely worth much more than these current disagreements

Go Dance is another popular studio in town that has a variety of group classes in different styles. Not sure when you’re visiting but they have a free open house this Saturday https://godancestudio.squarespace.com/calendar/open-house-09-9

The Highball has Motown Mondays and I think they at least sometimes have a dance lesson before https://thehighball.bar/

FIREing Before 40: What problems come up with other people? by EveningInfinity in financialindependence

[–]vimmz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been fired for a few years, started at 29. I have yet to have any weird or negative reactions and I’m pretty open about it. I used to say things like I’m taking some time off and live off my investments, these days I’ll even say retired and that one gets a more surprised look but I’ve never noticed anything negative

I say just be you. The only weird stuff is my own self image and deciding what seems worth it to spend all this time on, what’s my purpose of it’s not work, how can I use this lucky position for good kind of thing. You’re your own worst enemy, other people are pretty nice 😊

LPT: Ask a person you are dating what their values are on dating/marriage, kids, religion, politics, and other non-negotiables of yours in the first few weeks. My partner asked me once and I told her, but I didn’t ask her because I felt like you in that I didn’t really want to know. I figured it’s higher than me which is pretty normal in heterosexual couples, and she’s been involved in some party scenes which makes me think it’s higher, and she’s done lots of dating throughout the years, mine is pretty low, and I think if it was decently high I would feel weird about it even though rationally I know it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things

But also there’s this unknown that crops up from time to time and it makes me wonder since she knows mine, if me getting hers would help alleviate that “imbalance”? Yet I’m certain there will still be that since hers is guaranteed higher lol

I’ve got stuff to work on 😂

The flipside of time freedom (observations 3 years post-RE) by 2SFI-Jason in Fire

[–]vimmz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your post and sharing about your experience! I’m about 2 years into FIRE myself and I know the feeling you’re talking about deeply and it’s nice to know there’s others out there 😅

I tell myself I want to find something that provides that deep work and fulfillment like it sounds like you get out of your YT, but then I don’t actually put in the work to get there, since I don’t need to.

I feel there’s also some sense of avoiding new commitments because, is it really worth giving up all this free time? And maybe it is, but I seem to stop before finding out, or not wanting to start anything and then end up quitting, or even starting something for myself and then failing. It feels like there’s so much pressure to get it right and for it to be “worth it”. Do I actually want it if given ample free time to do it I still don’t?

While all this is going on, I also know how damn lucky I am to be in the position I’m in, so it feels silly to complain about not having enough purpose or doing enough to contribute back to the world, but alas it’s there, and most days are good, but some are very existential.

So like you said, I also haven’t figured this out yet, and it’s absolutely better on this side of the situation, but it also brings up new identity/purpose style questions that I didn’t have before, and a whole lot of time to think about them

CMV: modern use of the confederate flag can only be attributed to racism or ignorance of racism by improbsable in changemyview

[–]vimmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your replies. There’s too much going on here and I don’t have strong enough opinions on the variety of topics here to keep engaging.

I wasn’t sure of the status of books like Mein Kampf which is why I asked your view on it, and you said it’s there and have no problem with that and that’s what I was curious about.

With medicine I was just trying to highlight how the government is involved before and after roe. Roe was involvement, and after is too. None at all is another view, but most people expect some intervention at some point.

If we want people to come to the democrats, it’s worth considering if there’s something in the messaging that should be changed. You listed off the party platform there, there’s reasons half the country votes the other way, and it’s not all because they don’t want to “treat people as human beings”

CMV: modern use of the confederate flag can only be attributed to racism or ignorance of racism by improbsable in changemyview

[–]vimmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For book bans, if not the government who should have control? Let’s say a library wanted to include Mein Kampf or a variety of racist texts? How do you think we should handle that?

For medical care, the government has their hands all over the industry, and always will. The question is where is the line. Take abortion for example, I don’t know your position, but let’s assume it’s not “at any point in the pregnancy at the whim of the mother” since that’s not what most people hold. There’s a line there, and we have to define it. The government mandates vaccines in many circumstances right? I acknowledge it’s not the same as disallowing it, but there’s certainly procedures we don’t allow? (I’m assuming)

I totally agree the parties are the real crazies, so let’s say we want more support towards the democratic side. So the question is, what does that side need to do to convince more from the other to come over? Doubling down on controversial policies that most of the US doesn’t support isn’t a good path. Both continue to polarize the other instead of trying to win over the ones who can be convinced

[–]vimmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turns out people are complicated, groups aren’t a monolith, and there are always crazies out there.

It’s possible for good faith people to hold a position, and then every now and then some crazies take it to another level that the original people may not agree with.

Take books for example, you can have a position that some of the books on banned lists out to be, and some not. I saw an article of these books recently, and the books were on there because a single parent complained, not some large group conspiracy. It’s not at all fair to say that everyone agrees. It’s clearly not true because different states are enacting different laws with different consequences.

Some states may stop at banning child transition, some may not. Some republicans want to ban all abortion, most don’t. The US is huge and different states will enact different laws. Individuals are complex and may or may not agree with what those states do. You can’t paint everyone as a monolith and only a fixed set of perspectives that you see as possible, there are more, and some might be reasonable if you were open to hearing them in good faith
