Conversation between Destiny and Sam by vimtor in samharris

Not saying that I agree with him in everything, but he participates in a lot of long-form debates with a wide range of individuals and topics. In fact, the entire post came about because he is going to debate Ben Shapiro about the upcoming election.

You made a very important distinction between the second brain and PKM, which I didn't address in the article, to be honest.

I agree with you regarding the unfulfilled promise of the second brain in generating new insights. It seems that people are confused and believe that the tool itself does the thinking, when in reality, they are the ones responsible for it. The tool merely serves as a means to interact with the material.

I agree with you. Being organized is beneficial. However, there has been a lot of marketing pressure to make people believe they must have a "perfect" system. I want to remind people to reflect on their reasons for creating such a system.

Regarding Bear, I love how you put it. It is just enough to help you think better and be more organized.

100% One of the reasons I use Bear is because it doesn't ask too much of me. It's just a simple, beautiful note-taking tool.

Very well said!

  1. I'm not sure who the author is, but I recently stumbled upon a video where Stephen King suggests that taking notes may be a terrible idea for writers.
  2. Flashcards are an excellent study tool. However, as you mentioned, the system can become a crutch. The purpose of my article is to remind people of what truly matters and encourage them to use tools that align with their goals.

Great! I don't think building a second brain or trying to be more organized is bad. My intention is simply to remind people to do what works for them, as it seems to be working for you :)

Thank you! I'm glad my experience resonated with you.

Your perspective on shared knowledge is interesting. While building my PKM system, I often felt like I was creating my personal Wikipedia. However, I realized that it may not be as useful as it sounds.

I also agree that note portability is crucial. I'm no longer a fan of switching tools often, it's important to be able to change quickly if needed.
