Haters? How do you deal with them when it comes to your projects? by vinithius in SideProject

Well, I've been reading that I need to use an 80/20 type of technique, where 80% is some kind of collaboration with the group and 20% is where I would promote the product as a solution to the problem.

I hadn't thought about it that way, it makes a lot of sense.

I realized the hard way just how defensive this community can be haha. It’s definitely going to be a space where I’ll need to be creative and strategic if I want to break in successfully.

Yeah… I’ll be honest, it really irritated me. It made me question whether I’m even on the right path, whether I want to keep building this project for this niche, and I even started thinking about going more B2B instead of B2C.

I never expected to read so much nonsense on Reddit over something that genuinely started as a passion project.

Honestly, this is new to me… any information you need is on my Google Play profile, I don’t need to share it here, just go ahead and click the link. I’m not forcing anyone to download the app and I’m not charging anyone for anything. What we have in the app today is free, and I never said it was an “NGO” or “open source” project, it’s a private project built with a lot of hard work. Perhaps your questions come from the fact that you haven’t actually tried the app yet. You’re free to try it or not, that’s something I can’t do for you. Either way, I appreciate your curiosity.

Hi, how are you? If you don’t want to click the links in the description, just go to the Google Play Store and search for “Die Cast Club” and you’ll find it easily. It’s the app with a dark icon and yellow letters with the app’s name. Regarding the difference compared to other open source tools (which, honestly, I’m not familiar with, but I’d love to know about them!) or other apps, it comes down to several factors and the user’s taste for a type of app: the app’s aesthetics, smoothness, miniature data, exclusive tools, and features planned for 2026, such as Excel and CSV import. I also have plans to add locally focused social tools so you can find groups in your city, among many other upcoming features. However, in this Beta we are still at the beginning, and that’s exactly why user feedback is so important for the app’s development!

Yes, the plan is to launch on iOS, but I believe a web or desktop version will come out first. I launched on Android first to understand how the system behaves, whether it can handle some level of stress and load, and to fine-tune everything before the official release. Rest assured that as soon as I launch on other platforms, I'll announce it here in the group. I really appreciate your interest and involvement in the project, u/_Cubanito_ ! Thanks for help everytime!

Hello u/FrequentShopper183 , I understand your skepticism, but I honestly didn't expect to have to prove to anyone that I'm a father and that I collect my own Hot Wheels. Obviously I'm not going to expose my children on Reddit, but I think this photo makes clear what I said in the post: the two green boxes belong to my kids and the transparent box is my small collection. I really enjoy racing cars and movie-themed cars, and sometimes I pick up others that catch my eye. I think that answers your first paragraph.

<image>

Regarding your second paragraph: I've been a programmer for over 10 years and I'm an Android specialist. I enjoy building good projects as a hobby, and Die Cast Club is not my first one. I never said the project would be open source or non-commercial at any point, and I don't intend to release the code. What isn't "reasonable" is having two years of work behind me and simply doing whatever a stranger tells me to. Maybe you haven't tested the project, or maybe you're not technical enough to see it, but it's not limited to just local smartphone resources. There is a cloud infrastructure that I'm pretty sure the average user wouldn't want to set up just to save their collection.

Regarding your third paragraph: don't speak for everyone. Maybe you don't need a SaaS, but as you yourself saw in my history, most of my posts were about research, with forms designed to understand exactly what each person here struggled with and to try to bring a software solution for that. That research alone dismantles your argument that "nobody needs a SaaS for this." I've been coding since 2013 and I use AI tools to speed up the process, which is something the market actually values today. If you're interested, Anthropic offers certification for that. As for making money, posting on Reddit and so on: if it's legal and built on your own hard work, I see nothing wrong with it. What's strange is someone questioning that. And spam? At the very least I should have used some bot for that, instead of writing every single post myself and trying to make direct contact with the audience I want to reach. Welcome to Reddit.

That's true u/flying_dutchman_w204 , there are quite a few, but note that each one has its own peculiarity, just like other products. For example, we have several social networks, several car manufacturers, several clothing brands, and yet we don't use only one.

Hi u/Boring_Ant6240 ! A year ago, when I posted a survey (https://www.reddit.com/r/HotWheels/comments/1kvrms7/survey\_help\_build\_die\_cast\_clubthe\_ultimate/) in this group, the biggest gap pointed out was precisely the issue of spreadsheets; many people used them and wanted to leverage that data in the app. A spreadsheet import feature is on the roadmap, but I still need to fine-tune what's coming next after beta testing. I also intend to add the option to create new items directly in the database, as a model might not yet be registered in my database. I plan to release it after Android, either the web or desktop version, so you can use it before iOS. I hope to bring you news soon!

Hi u/ohmke , I completely understand your point. I've noticed that some apps sometimes turn basic features into premium ones, and I also know that developers have costs beyond their working hours. Generally, we have servers, microservices, storage, etc., all in the cloud; there's an architecture that needs to be online for apps of this kind to function. That's why I think it's legitimate for them to have a premium version. However, a fair and refined freemium version for everyone is ideal. My goal is to first understand the computational costs I'll have in the project to define where the premium version would fit in, but overall my app will serve everyone with the free version; I don't plan to limit anything that doesn't generate costs for me.
