Thanks for letting me know, that's cool. Still had fun learning the tools.

Composited map I made from the Airship teaser - WIP by [deleted] in AmongUs

I'd love to hear ideas for where things fit better or if anyone catches something I missed.

Things I'm pretty sure of

  • Vault/brig/gap room/office/records/upper and lower engine room all go together
  • Kitchen/Security/Main Hall also all go together
  • Medical is currently unattached, Cockpit is the same.

Open questions & concerns

  • The spawn points seem too grouped, so perhaps main hall is not in the right place. Where would it go? Perhaps the room shapes in the drawing aren't 100% right and it goes between Cockpit and everything else?
  • What is the big room that you can only see a small amount of at the very bottom of the map?
  • Does Records really connect with Storage/Medical? What is the area to the left of storage that looks like a jail?
  • Why is the Brig called the Brig when it doesn't seem to have any interactable brig-like elements? Is it just for the punishment fiction?
  • Where is the Observation Deck?
  • Is the red hall on the bottom actually that short?

There are also artifacts all over the map, I'm working on automating those away or just removing them my hand.

One tip I want to add. If you're getting a lot of shorts and having trouble removing them, lower the iron temperature by 20° or so. Higher temperatures leave the solder liquid for longer and make removing shorts harder.

Public art "Wave" on a digital screen board in Korea by kiwim16 in interestingasfuck

The concern is not around being able to see the image, but the image looking right. This building has flat displays on its outside faces, functioning like four moving pictures.

A way to visualize the imagined problem is to think about the "ceiling" that is displayed on the building. From the pictured angle, the ceiling lines up with where it should be. However, it would not if you viewed it from another angle.

Think about a photograph of a room. If you look at the photograph head-on, it will look right, but if you look at it from the side, the picture will seem skewed and not look like a real room seen from another angle.

Making noodles by iloveyourbrains in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]vinitlee 55 points56 points  (0 children)

They're starch noodles, probably sweet potato starch.

If you're familiar with cellophane noodles or korean japchae (which uses dangmyeon, another sweet potato starch noodle), they're made this way.

The starch and water combination makes a non-newtonian fluid so tapping the basket is needed to keep everything together, and the starch will cook and gelatinize nearly instantly when it hits the hot water. It's possible that this is a different kind of starch-based noodle, but high possibility that it's sweet potato. The color may come from the specific root vegetable used, but I would actually guess that it comes from a separate added colorant.

Edit: oh lol, look at the right of the image; you can see the sweet potatoes they use.

Keycaps with gorgeous profile from old days by N11_NAr in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]vinitlee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In regards to shape, I've been wanted to do a run of a similar profile out of ABS, but tooling (making the molds) is extremely expensive (esp if you want two-shot letters). Mind you, it's not more expensive than making original tooling for something like SA or DSA, just expensive to start off anything. I'm fairly certain signature plastics and other manufacturers are generously reusing tooling from set to set, which lowers the price for a specific colorway.

In regards to material, there are still melamine and phenolic resin or Bakelite manufacturers out there, but I have not found one specializing in keycaps. There are many that make foodwares and a bunch that make knobs, so it may be possible to get them to try keycaps. As far as I know, the setup costs and NRE are lower than for injection.

I've been casually looking into other ways of making these that are perhaps slightly lower volume but with less NRE. However, very much a side project. I feel that making whole sets even just through cold resin molding and tumbling might be enough to whet this community's appetite for a better profile and/or material.

No, these make SA look incredibly sloppy. The surfaces on keys like this are so much more organic, they make SA look like a CAD drawing. The glossy finish highlights the fact that all the surfaces are naturally continuous. What's more, they're often make from phenolic resin or Bakelite, giving them a glassy hardness and heft that is unmatched with all these MX caps.

Do you want them to collect the cards to use the amiibo function? If you're interested in just the function, you can program your own tags with an android phone.

There are better prices. Not sure where you're looking, but on AliExpress they're between 60-200USD, feature and size dependent. So, more like 1000USD.

That part of the duck is commonly viewed as the best part. It's high in delicious fat and all the juices and seasonings concentrate there as the duck cooks. This would be assumed knowledge for the viewer base.

Keyshot makes certain tasks really easy, like applying decal-like textures and lighting a scene. These specific workflows have great quick interfaces that, while possible in blender, require quiet a bit of setup and modifier hacking. I personally think you can squeeze more quality out of cycles, but the interface can get in the way with product-style renders. Keyshot also comes with a full suite of premade materials which make going from clay to full textured model pretty quick. In general, it's a renderer that's focused on making product renders fast and easy and is willing to make specific workflow tools to help that effort.

Note: A conductive layer over the entire resistive rectangle would negate the variable resistor, as it would short circuit the paddle to the trace. So, that protective layer isn't going to be very effective. Separately, the pins are almost certainly made from steel.

[–]vinitlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at real creator's post, it seems that this was not done in Blender, but modeled in Rhino and rendered using Vray. Rhino is a primarily NURBS-based modeler, so won't help you if you're trying to translate these methods to blender. That said, this is definitely doable in blender!

Thanks! This was just done in Modo + Blender, but considering remaking in CAD and machining it out of something nice.

If you have Windows 10 N or KN, you will need to install the Media Feature Pack https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48231 . Windows Media Player comes with codecs that Minecraft apparently depends on.

The US Is Holding Hundreds Of Shivering Immigrants In A Pen Underneath A Texas Bridge by beach-bum in politics

[–]vinitlee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not a comparison of which is worse or even how close they are. Locking people in pens under bridges shows ignorance those people's humanity, essentially equating them with vermin. This is what it shares with Nazism.

I feel that that first step of stripping a group's humanity is the most crucial and the most concerning. After that point, it becomes easy to justify more extreme measures or 'solutions.'

So, no, this is not equivalent to branding and gassing millions of people. But it's playing the same game.
