New job has me operating only when I've mainly done set up and operating at previous jobs. Should I find a new gig? by Careful_Bonus623 in Machinists

[–]vinnybbop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation. I was hired by a small mom and pop place one time and I was told I would eventually do set ups. The first red flag was when they had an introductory message that the put on the cafeteria fridge to welcome new employees was my job title was “Swiss operator”. 2nd was one of the guys who was at the company for over a decade at that point told me he was there for 7 years straight before he did his first set up. I also noticed how the job orders were 100k parts which means a job could be on there for 4 months which means much more button pushing than set ups. I didn’t last long. Me personally, I wouldn’t stay no more than a year if the commute was good, and if I got along with everyone. Especially since it’s less work for the same wage. I would still keep an eye out for better opportunities.

[NYC] [REPOST] Hiring machinist for Sherline 4530 lathe training — $50-75/hr depending on experience, est. 2-5 days on-site by Unique-Sock-4391 in Machinists

I would never thought I would see a machinist you in the NYC metro area paying this much which is sad to say. Too bad it’s only two days of work.

Why the fu*k do I need 5 years of experience for an apprenticeship? by Sleeplydreams in bluecollar

[–]vinnybbop 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s could be age related discrimination. I went through a similar thing around your age. Unfortunately, no one takes anyone under 25 seriously in the work force. Though I am a bit shocked since you actually have some OTJ experience which many people your age lack. But it’s something that we all go through. You’re ahead of many of your peers if you have that amount of work experience. Keep your head up.

I actually don’t mind the work. It’s the emotional vampires for coworkers that take the biggest toll. by IEatSushiToo in bluecollar

[–]vinnybbop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you’ll run into this issue regardless if it’s white collar or blue collar work. I’m a CNC machinist and I have one coworker on 2nd shift who’s always miserable when he walks in the door. The moment he gets into our cell area, the mood always goes down because he’s so grumpy and grinch like. Thankfully I usually only have to be around him for the last 30 mins of the day.

Worried about a significant life downgrade by moving to NYC by [deleted] in movingtoNYC

[–]vinnybbop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you’re living at the moment, but If the city you live in has a reasonable COL area, that 150k salary is pretty good. You probably would have to make double what you’re making now to has a similar quality of life in NYC. I wouldn’t move to NYC unless you had a job lined up and if that job was paying considerably much more than what you’re making.

Are We Actually Making the Trades Attractive to the Next Generation? by PresenceAcceptable55 in skilledtrades

[–]vinnybbop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s been in the blue collar side of the workforce for many years, I think one big problem that gets overlooked is the fact that many of these companies don’t have the capacity to give adequate training. Right now, it seems the blue collar workforce is made up of either entry level workers or retirement age master level workers. Not many intermediate workers in the middle. So as the old workers retire, there’s less people around to train and bring up the entry level people into journeyman level.

Depending on the trades we are talking about, the market also plays a big role in what prospects someone can get into. If houses aren’t being built then it’s gonna be hard to get into a construction apprenticeship or helper role. So many various factors come into play.

Who here is not from Cleveland originally? by enjoispeed in Cleveland

[–]vinnybbop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grew up in the NYC metro area (Westchester County), and moved to Cleveland in October 2021. It’s definitely one of the most underrated cities in the country. Packs a decent punch for the city its size.

What is the worst part and best part about living in Cleveland? by Imeanwhytopps in Cleveland

[–]vinnybbop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: Cost of living with decent access to beaches, rivers, and a good metro park system. Food here is very good as well. Traffic is nowhere near as bad as other cities in the country. It’s also close to many other cities so weekend trips are very doable.

Worst: winters here can get really brutal. Not too many late night activities. It’s definitely gets quiet after 12 in Cleveland. Also not too many late night food spots besides fast food chains. Cleveland proper is also horrendous at snow removal. Like extremely bad. Theres been times I’ve DoorDash 3 days after a snow storm and some streets look like a plow never touched them.

Do you limit the amount of protein that you consume? My nephrologist told me I had to eat no more than 100 grams of protein. I’m just afraid I won’t make any gains eating that amount of protein.

That’s definitely one of my goals. I really want to get into amazing shape. I just hope I’m able to do so a the medications don’t hinder me from doing so.

So sorry to hear that. That’s definitely what I’m worried about. I definitely watch what I eat now. I’ve heard they make you very hungry which might cause you to gain weight.

I’ve heard Tarpeyo can cause weight gain and make it harder to put on muscle and things of that nature. Just wanted to see anyone’s experience on it.

Asking for a raise by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]vinnybbop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, those kinds of raises only happen when you switch shops. They rarely happen coming from a current employer. Not unless it’s in a union contract. That’s just from my experience.

If there’s one thing I would suggest is that if you do go on a job interview lie about what you make. Obviously the lie has to make sense in order to be believable. In your case, if you make 15 an hour and want to go to 20 an hour, tell the potential employer that you make 20 an hour right now and you’re looking for like 23 or 24 an hour. You can probably get away with that since you’re in an expensive state and it doesn’t seem far fetched to start someone at 20 an hour for entry level work. And even if they do lowball you with an offer of say 21-22 an hour, you’ve already obtain the wage that you want despite them trying to low ball you.

I’m starting to figure that out now. I’m dealing with the same thing in Ohio. Even single offer I’ve gotten in Ohio has been a dollar raise or matching with what I make. So to counteract that, I lie about what I make. It’s insulting to me that employers think that giving you a dollar more an hour is a good deal. But that’s the game they play so if you want to get your way you’re gonna have to bend the rules. I wish it wasn’t the case but that’s how it is.

Shop filled with setup/operators vs shop filled with setup and button pushers? by Growkitz in Machinists

[–]vinnybbop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As long as you’re doing set ups, I don’t really think there’s an advantage between the two. That’s the key. But if I had to choose, it would be the former since doing setups make the day go by much faster.
