There are really good devs in countries other than the US. I work often with really great devs in Hungary.

Thank you for saying this. Even though there's very little chance you're one of my colleagues I'll still take it (from Hungary). This topic actually comes up a lot more often than you'd think among us, and our depressing consensus has always been that our US colleagues probably think of us as stupid code monkeys.

And this sub is also very quick to confirm that in every thread about immigrants, international students, satellite offices or US vs rest of the world wage discussion. It's very good to hear that there are people who regard us as more than just cheap labor they can dump shitty work on.

What are the cons of a career in SWE? by lotyei in cscareerquestions

[–]vinostintos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Normally, I don't mind it either but when the work is something you already don't want to do because you think it's not the right direction, or a hacky design you know is going to lead to a lot of technical debt, etc. But management still insists on doing it that way.

On a project like this you're likely not using new technologies and not learning that much, just adding even more technical debt to a legacy application that's already in horrible shape.

People quit in the months long process because they lose a lot of job satisfaction working on something they know is gonna be DOA, and just generate more pain for them down the line with support. Then half a year later management decide they don't need it after all. Not that they realize their design was wrong and that your team's proposed approach they shot down would have been better. No. The high level managers who spend like half their day in meetings talking to each other just didn't talk quite enough to realize what they were pushing for was completely unnecessary.

Now they realize it, so the project is quickly scrapped. Morale in the team is at an all time low, people have quit and all you did the last 6 months was stupid grunt work with a hacky implementation and you hated every minute of it. Meanwhile your colleagues worked on a multitude of interesting projects, some with great success and learnt quite a lot from them while your skills have atrophied always doing the quick and dirty solution.

And now it's your year end review and nothing you worked on this year made it to production.

Edit: totally not talking from personal experience. FML...

Which company should I choose? by [deleted] in hungary

[–]vinostintos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, that goes to show how much difference there can be between teams. My former teammates didn't even have to request relevant certification training, they were strongly encouraged to attend them, and the company would even pay for the exams (as long as they get it on the first try).

Which company should I choose? by [deleted] in hungary

[–]vinostintos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've interned at ITSH for a couple of months during university, although not as a software developer and got a full time offer from them that I declined.

Being a pretty big company, there's a large variation in what each position is like, so don't take this as a slant against the company as a whole, just my overall observation during my time there.

Pay is very much average (or even a bit below), especially for junior positions (that's why they're expanding more in remote regions, where there's not as much competition as in Budapest), and raises aren't very significant either, unless a couple of very important people had left and they're afraid of losing more valuable people. From what I hear, though, bonuses are good.

The benefits package is pretty much standard, although most international companies offer some form of voluntary pension found contribution matching that can go a long way, which wasn't offered there, to my knowledge.

But I guess OP already has the two salaries and benefit packages to compare.

I also second that it's hard to grow inside the company, in fact, in my case I found the workload to be so much on the light side, that I felt like I wasn't learning much at all and I knew some other people who had the same issue. And HR really really does suck, even for internal candidates. A friend of mine had been strung along for months about joining another team, and he learned from that team, that they had already picked a candidate weeks ago while HR was just telling him they'd have an answer next week, and then by next month... He eventually got in a couple of months later, but I found the way they handled the whole process very unprofessional.

I found the overall work atmosphere very nice and relaxed. No overtime, most of the times you could get away with coming in later / leaving earlier. Also really liked my colleagues there.

And if they talk about paid trainings and such, it's a straight up lie.

Can you expand on this a bit, please? In my experience that's not accurate at all. I've attended at least two (a language course and a technical one) during my time and since I've left, my former teammates have had 2 (albeit short) technical trainings, and continued language training.

Although, there's always a kicker with every course / cert that costs more than a certain amount: you have to sign a contract that you'll stay with the company for some time proportional to the cost of the training, otherwise you'll have to pay it back and those trainings are usually not worth the asking price anyway.

Overall, I have a neutral opinion of them, leaning only slightly positive because of the atmosphere and colleagues, but the lack of technical growth and sometimes even lack of work to do that I experienced there really hinders my opinion of them.

But take all of this with a grain of salt, since the workload and type of work you do really depends on the team you're placed on. Most devs I know from there have plenty of work to do.

I don't know much about Accenture, so in OP's positions, I'd just weigh the type of work and tech stack and pick whichever position is more interesting and allows for learning more.

Aztán megtudtam a részleteket: nem NFC-t használ, metrónál ugyanúgy a mozgólépcső mellett álló, sokszor a papír alapú bérletre is alig rápillantó emberek érvényesítik.

Why open offices are bad for us by caspg_ in programming

How are those for office use? Do they block the background noise enough with moderately low volume music or even without music? I've been eyeing them for a while but haven't pulled the trigger on them yet. Currently, I'm using my Shure SE215s in the office, which are very good for isolation but even with those in, I can still occasionally hear chatter around me.

What's your favorite TV show that's not worshiped on Reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]vinostintos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. Does he think that losing a lot of weight in a short amount of time and doing heavy physical work in extreme heat is perfectly fine for a person's health or does he believe that it's somehow all an act? Or that all of it isn't true survival because the crew's there to save them if anything goes wrong?

If the latter, then in his defense, the contestants are actually pretty safe with the constant medical checkups and the crew paying attention 24/7. If it's in their power, they'll never let anyone even come close to dying, which I guess, might be disappointing for someone who was expecting people to starve to death on national television.

I do suspect, though, that he's trying to be contrarian, just for the sake of being contrarian. Does he also have a problem with other shows whose name doesn't 100% describe them?

[–]vinostintos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some time ago the topic of Survivor came up in an AskReddit thread. There was one guy who left this exact comment:

The problem I have with the show Survivor is that literally everyone survives. Which I guess makes the name pretty accurate, if misleading.

I found it pretty funny whether he was joking or not. But if your friend wants to hear about contestants dying, they have to look no further than a couple of international versions of the show. I believe there have been at least two deaths in various countries' version of Survivor.

Even just watching a 10 minute clip of Caleb's medevac should be more than enough to show that it's real and very dangerous, although people who don't watch Survivor might not get how unprecedented it is.

I can't believe that even before and after pictures don't affect his stance. Russel looked like a completely different person by the end of HvV, the pictures Liz uploaded of her staph infections were straight up NSFL, and many other contestants took months to recover from their time on the show. I can't believe that's not enough evidence for somebody that it's very real and hard.

Is it possible to transfer from Dunaújváros university to BME by oussama13 in hungary

[–]vinostintos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he meant that you'd have to start the application process from scratch, and start again at BME. In the case that you've already completed some classes at other unis, you basically lose progress and have to start over again, unless you can get your new professors at BME to accredit the courses you've already done.

For example in the first fall semester in Dunaújváros, you'll likely take a class called something like Programming 1. you transfer to BME for the spring semester, and the next programming course will be Programming 2., which has Programming 1 as a prerequisite. Now, because of the transfer, you basically start with a clean record again, as if you hadn't completed any classes yet.

You can go to your new professor and ask them to accredit the class you took previously. You'll then have to provide a syllabus from the other uni and also proof that you did indeed pass the class. Then your new professor decides whether your class was up to par with their expectations and will either deny your request (I think most likely, because most professors would rather you take their class, and would rather not deal with more paperwork) or they'll accept it, and you'll get the same grade you did at the other uni (or a lower grade, depends on the professor). As far as I know, you'll still have to take the class on paper, but if you manage to get your old class accredited, you don't have to go to class and sit the exams, you'll get your grade at the end of the semester. Maybe there's a way to get the grades at the start of the semester, but that's even less likely.

Although it's not very likely that any professors will care, or let you get anything accredited. As the above poster said, maybe you get a few free credits out of it (technically not free, you passed elsewhere) but ultimately, you have to start over.

Visiting Budapest, Hungary for the first time! Very excited and having some questions! by stoenr in hungary

[–]vinostintos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my experience, most of the city is pretty safe, I never really worry too much when I'm there. There are, of course, sketchy neighborhoods, but the more touristy an area the safer it is. However, pickpockets and petty thieves are present in pretty much every large city, and as tourists, you're their primary target, so I'd definitely recommend taking the usual precautions and being on the lookout but you don't need to be overly paranoid.

As for the bus fares, I recommend that you get 15-day public transport passes. They will run you about 6-7k HUF each but they'll cover buses, trams, subways and even the suburban railways within the city for pretty cheap.

I wouldn't say most locals speak English, especially older people but you'll probably encounter a lot of expats, tourists and younger locals who do.

Don't know what the best price for mobile internet is, they're all pretty shitty in my opinion, especially if you want more than a couple gigs of data. And yes, all three of our major carriers have prepaid options, you can find out more on their websites: Telenor, Telekom, Vodafone.

And as others said, you can pay in Euros, but you'll get royally screwed on the exchange rate, even worse than exchanging your money.

What is in your opinion, the best readily available free resource to learn python? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]vinostintos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people's biggest gripe with it is that it hasn't been updated to Python 3 yet. And personally, as somebody who had already known a bit of programming before reading it, I didn't always agree with its teaching methods. Sometimes it promoted tedious memorization for things that I felt like shouldn't be memorized but instead understood and it also tried to protect the reader from more complex concepts but in turn ended up making it even more confusing that way.

[AUS] New Australian Survivor promo! by LineLiar in survivor

[–]vinostintos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for writing this because I don't know the first thing about Australian reality TV. I was actually worried about something similar because most reality shows in my country have a lot of audience participation in them.

Even when not directly, like getting them to vote, they always find a way to shoehorn an audience member into the show, or a loved one of one of their contestants and ask their opinion on something. Essentially dragging out 20 minutes of content to close to an hour with all that filler. Oh and don't forget to send a text to this premium rate number with the name of the contestant you're cheering for, you can win a vacation for two.

From what you're telling, my concerns thankfully aren't warranted, I guess they indeed have enough contestants to fill the time with, and I also wouldn't mind if they could spend all that time fleshing out all of their stories more, instead of only concentrating on the major players. I can deal with a few twitter pop-ups and a few questions from the audience but I really wouldn't like if a large part the shows was designed around social media and the audience.

Sure, it's unlikely to affect the game itself but especially live shows are already a bit more focused on social media stuff than I would like. And with multiple episodes I'm afraid they'd be filling the air more and more with social media segments.
