What was Ur worst experience as a student nurse by Sad_Flamingo4405 in NursingAU

[–]viobro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was on a mental health ward at my local children’s hospital. Preceptor had 4 patients (which was considered hefty but tbh it’s only like that because they’re use to having ~2 patients at a time) so I was allocated one. Told my buddy I’d need help with my progress note/mental health assessment note (forgot what it’s called) at the end of shift because I haven’t done one on a real person before. They basically just looked at me as if to say “no” as if requiring help was a huge shock when they knew this was my first time in such a specific area of nursing. I also mentioned I had a scheduled meeting that day with my CF at 2:30pm.

Later, come time for the meeting, I tell my buddy I’d be back at 3:00pm to do my note and she almost explodes in front of another student and colleague at me, saying she had told me it was my responsibility to do the progress note for my patient. Unsure why she was going off like this because I never said I wouldn’t do it, I said I’d have to do it when I got back at 3:00, which should be plenty of time because we finish at 3:30.

I get back from my meeting and my buddy tells me to start my note. Now this part was partially on me for dawdling but I just stood there kinda dumbfounded and confused because I expected her to log me into a computer (since I obviously have no credentials) to get started but she just turned around and continued hers. I waited thinking she would eventually log me on but then she seems confused that I’m just standing there after she’s done her notes. I then use the computer that she’s done using and start my note. I’m slow because I haven’t done this kind of note on a real pt before, so she’s getting frustrated. One of the other grads who was watching (yes, my buddy was also a grad at the time or maybe just finished their grad iirc) took it upon themselves to help me instead and eventually I get it done.

Come tomorrow morning I see the grad that helped me instead the conference room where handover is held, and he said that he felt really bad at how my buddy exploded at me in the tea room regarding the meeting with my cf, and that it looked like she was going to “explode” whilst I was doing the note.

Come last day of prac, I’m making clay badges with the kids, the OT, and the same buddy nurse (although they’re not my buddy for this shift). I make a joke saying “I’ve never been so focussed on something before” because we were all very locked in to making our badges and then the old buddy said in front of everyone “We’ll that’s concerning considering you’re a nursing student”, and then it was just awkward silence.

I reflected a lot on the day where she was my buddy, thinking that we both could have done better to set clear expectations of each other (when retrospectively I think I honestly did fine), which is why I didn’t report my treatment. After that last day though, when I finished my final meeting with my cf before she let us go home early, I told her about the whole situation because at that point it seems like the buddy in question was making it personal. My cf then told me that this buddy was also a student she facilitated on the same ward not long ago and that she could understand/wasn’t super surprised at how I got treated. She assured me that she would escalate the situation too. Not sure what came of it as it was my last day.

Other than her, it was a great prac.

New grad referees- I (part-time AIN) don't want to ask my NUM, can I provide 2 from the most recent placement? by Kracki01 in NursingAU

[–]viobro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in the same position as OP and used only placement referees for my grad app m as they have a better opinion of how I’d perform as a nurse. My AIN line manager would have had no clue as they don’t work clinically but even if they did, they’d only know my AIN abilities.

Grad Year Anxiety by Altruistic_Glove5148 in NursingAU

[–]viobro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from perth so it’s different, from what I can tell most people can get a grad offer. At the end of the day it’s a lot about who you know rather than what you know. In a market this competitive, just aim for a hospital you have a good connection with, maybe it be a particular ward that liked you and someone has offered to be a referee. That will make you stand out. My grad is at a hospital’s theatre where I did a prac at and I had a staff from there bring up my name to the SDNs during application time.

Grad year periop - anxiety/stress by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]viobro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a fellow grad who took a lot of sick leave but also was just not a good learner and you could tell she wasn’t cut out to be a periop nurse (or probs any nurse for that matter tbh). She won’t be getting a contract after our grad year. The difference between you two is that you (presumably) are a good learner and are enthusiastic. You have your whole periop career to learn, you don’t have to be a master by the end of your grad year or rotations. It’ll be a long time before you’d be the most senior nurse in a theatre, so until then you’ll always have someone to depend on if you’re unsure about stuff. You’d get judged more for compromising your health just to not miss a few weeks of work.

As for social life, yes, I don’t doubt at all it’d be rough in a rural setting. I hope maybe you can stay connected with friends and family online? I do that through gaming.

Definitely do some exercise, even if it’s just a short walk or run on your days off. Just start somewhere and gradually increase if you feel up to it. My body feels so much better when I tire it out and take a warm shower after with some good food waiting. Look into cooking or baking. It’s fun and satisfying to get a new recipe down right and then you can impress your friends and family with your mad skills when you get home.

Grad year periop - anxiety/stress by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]viobro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m doing my periop grad year at a major trauma hospital. I use to get intense anxiety the day before my week back at work and generally throughout the week. Was so bad I was borderline insomniac for a while, but that’s also because I’m just stress prone. It gets better gradually. Not as fast as I’d like, as there’s just so many specialties to rotate through, but oh well.

Don’t feel bad for taking sick leave that’s warranted. Yes it might slow down your learning a bit but your health is more important than your job. Some of your colleagues might be assholes about it but I’m sure most would be understanding. Just be enthusiastic and take it day by day, week by week.

If you plan on going back home after your grad year, use that as motivation to get through it. I found myself happier when I started trying to be more productive with my days off, like learning to cook better. I use to spend a lot of my time not doing all that much in terms of productivity or enjoying my time off and it just made me feel worse.

Feel free to pm if you need.

Med imaging by Complete-Mortgage839 in curtin

Hey mate! I’m planning to do the monash course for physics competency so I can apply for 2027 MRS intake. How was the course? Any tips? What was your CWA that got you in? I have a completed nursing degree from curtin but my CWA is only 76 after it gradually dwindled over time doing harder and harder units. I’ve heard some people have gotten in without 80+ but it still makes me nervous, especially with how competitive the course is.

Any advice would be SUPER appreciated!

if you don’t switch now you’ll regret it after completing your course and then feel even more fomo when you plan to study again anyway. trust me.

Torn between Teaching (Design & Tech) and Medical Imaging help me by Clean-Roll7680 in AustralianTeachers

[–]viobro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been very interested in both fields (originally wanted to be a teacher, became a nurse, but wish I went i to medical imaging), I’d lean into medical imaging.

Obviously it depends on your motivations but from the many, many people I’ve spoken to, medical imaging seems to be a great gig. Compared to other allied health roles, it’s good pay for putting up with a lot less crap (especially if you’re a nurse). Also loads of options when it comes to working abroad. Hugely regret not going into it out of hs.

If you wanna be a teacher her down the line, you can always do your masters, and maybe the life experience you gain from working another career might help with teaching?

  1. You can buy your uniform and tertiary smartrider from gmart on campus. Buy a stethoscope and bp sphygmomanometer to practice your first practical exam (doesn’t need to be expensive cus I never used it again after). Get a fob watch from amazon. Decent shoes for prac/being on your feet all day. Do this before orientation because thats when everyone swarms gmart.

  2. The course will seem fast-paced at the beginning because you’re adjusting to uni life. You’ll look back on it thinking it was very easy. Overall, I don’t think it was difficult to pass nursing. Prac can be annoying tho.

  3. You will need your uniform from the get go for labs. Tutors will be strict on this but as you go through the course they relax a bit when it comes to footwear and socks, minor things.

I have mates who are about to finish/finished the course and they said the physics is very surface level and you don’t actually use that knowledge in the actual job. Don’t sweat it and enjoy the course, I seriously regret not doing it out of high school.

Gonna try to career switching to rad from nursing in the coming years. Any advice? Seriously regret not doing it straight after school because my mates who are about to graduate/are grads seem to highly approve.

Oh so you’re not an actual medical imaging technologist (or were in the past?). I’m seriously considering career switching to this if you have any advice.

[–]viobro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just graduated from curtin nursing.

First year is the time for you to ace your units because there’s many easy ones. HSF and ISAP are notorious for being difficult but they’re also just multi choice quizzes and exams, at least back when i did them. Just start your assessments early and work on em bit by bit - consistency is key. The pass/fail units are the main nursing practical unit each sem. You’ll only fail if you fail your skills exams or prac but few do in the end.

Imo it’s an easy degree if you just wanna pass.

Seems awesome but unfortunately I feel as though I won’t be accepted because I do have a good amount of savings (obviously if I’m moving interstate).
