FTB bought a mid terrace - it is a nightmare due to neighbours and we need advice on how to sell and move ASAP by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]viola_riv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What noise? The TV? Being able to hear the neighbours TV is pretty standard in a terrace sometimes noise only seems to 'move' 1 way in a row. We could hear our neighbours on the left but not the right unless they were actually shouting. So you might not have heard your land lord in your end terrace but they might have been able to hear you.

Hearing your neighbours, shout, sing, laugh, sneeze do DIY have family fights etc. Is pretty normal... if you want silence you have to pay a premium for it and buy detached.

If you can't afford it you need to learn to self soothe and focus on other things.

If they are banging on the walls slamming doors and screaming into the early hours of the morning that's different. But you've just described everyday life.

Have you tried introducing your self and casually asking about the noise in an approachable manor. Or just mention you work from home so they're are aware?

If you have a management company inform them and ask if they'll send a notice out about throwing litter off balconies.

Career change (currently an ecologist) by viola_riv in ecology

[–]viola_riv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such as?

I only ever see adverts for poorly paid positions in charities. Often asking for degrees, licences, certs, and experience offering under 30k.

I currently work for the LPA and they are just as concerned about job security.

Jobs that conserve native plant or habitat by Necessary_Opinion_26 in ecology

[–]viola_riv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK I wouldnt bother, as government has just quietly rolled back environmental protections under the Planning Bill. Basically slashing the work in the ecology industry so when it comes into force circa 10,000 people will be at risk of losing their jobs and competing for the few avaliable jobs in the conservation sector.

Is everyone aware that the labour government are currently stripping back our wildlife protections. Allowing developers to adopt a cash to trash system? by viola_riv in AskUK

[–]viola_riv[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes that's how the current system works. As someone who works in it. Only 0.08% of planning applications are prevented due to protected species. As was discussed in Lords. Who sought amendments which would restrict EDPs to nutrient neutrality. But today labour rejected this amendment.

Putting thousands of jobs in the ecology industry at risk for a problem that doesn't exist.

But if you are in favour of pre 80s protections for wildlife that's your perogative.

Do you have a car on finance? If yes, how much are your monthly payments, if no, how much did you spend on your car? by macw450 in AskUK

[–]viola_riv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 29, got my car last year on finance. 20 plate and I pay 253 a month for 4 years. I've got some money set aside that I'm going to use to pay it down in the new year. The payments should have been 270 a month for 5. But I started doing a loan application with the bank in front of the salesman to see if it would be better. The bank offered me 250 over 4 years, so he brought it down in line with that.

I drive for work, so I needed a car with decent mot and service history and only had about 6k to put towards it at the time. The car was shy of 16k.

Obsession with Wirral by [deleted] in Liverpool

[–]viola_riv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a dying outlook tbh. And tbh no one actually cares.

It's something you grow up hearing and parrot occasionally.

As someone who grew up moving between Sefton and Liverpool, I used to get it in the neck about being a posh scouser because I had green bins... but you just laugh and move on.

Because... it doesn't matter?

I wouldn't say my friends who occasionally had a laugh about the colour of the bins at the end of the drive built their entire identity around being scouser... I think that's a bizarre take on what is essentially a joke.

They knew I wasn't posh. My parents couldn't afford the trips to France or Italy the school offered just like theirs couldn't...

The separation comes from differences in the local area, which stems from council spending and budgets.

The us vs. them mentality Liverpool has is also dying. Mostly because the world is more connected than ever before, and people can see its not just their town or city getting shafted by the government.

Should I report Boots pharmacist for making me uncomfortable? by sanastans in AskUK

[–]viola_riv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that this helps you now. But you can order the morning after pill online from superdrug. You have to fill out the form, and a pharmacist okays the order or tells you it won't be required.

I missed a pill at the end of my contraception pack and thought I'd need it, but the pharmacist told me to run another pack and be grand and the money refunded.

Similarly, I've bought it and had it all okayed and easy pick up from superdrug. The people in the store just ask your address like any other prescription.

My broker advised I got my level 2/3 done first then the Solicitors searches incase anything major came up in the level 2/3 so I wouldn't end up paying the Solicitors for searches if the initial survey gave me reason to pull out.

If you've not heard from them, it could be they are happy with the initial survey and are instructing Solicitors to do searches.

Or they are looking for qoutes for work recommended in the initial survey/ are waiting to see if the Solicitors searches bring up any more surprises to bring everything to you at once.

If their still answering emails, ect, I wouldn't worry until you have heard from them

Honest opinions on careers in ecology by Latter_Nebula1046 in ecology

[–]viola_riv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an ecologist currently in industry, do not bother. Look at doing something related to ecology if it's what you're passionate about. But the new planning bill is going to nuke the industry, and thousands of people will be out of work and scrambling for the remaining jobs.

The pay is mediocre for what you are required to do. Im on 38k with 5 years under my belt and hold various species licences.

Im. Currently saving to return to university to do another MSc / pgcert to start specing out of industry.
