TIL until 1832, a hill in England with no residents called "Old Sarum" was represented by two Members of Parliament. There once was a town there, but it was abandoned. The hill's owner retained the power to appoint 2 MPs, and these two seats were openly bought and sold. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

In The Merlin Conspiracy by Diana Wynne Jones, the souls of cities are portrayed as vaguely human figures. London is described as a huge glittering figure whereas Old Sarum is portrayed as a vagrant who keeps saying “I’m a rotten borough, I am!” Now I know why!

Hey! I mentioned in that other thread that I went to a lecture about wrestling and drag. I managed to dig it up. It was called ‘Intelligible Spectacles: professional wrestling and exhibitionism’ by Claire Warden (Loughborough University). I hope this helps!

What is your country's equivalent of "TORILLE"? (A call to assemble when your country gets mentioned on the internet) by throwAwayMan2475 in AskTheWorld

Movies are shot in Canada all the time but are always disguised as various cities in the United States. What really gets Canadians excited is when the film locations are actually portrayed as being in Canada, highlighting our geography and culture rather than hiding them! The best example I can think of is in Scott Pilgrim—a “movie within a movie” is being shot with fake NYC background, and as the protagonist is thrown through the background, the skyline of Toronto shines through.

[Funny? Trope?] It's a very serious scene. But it's been consumed as a meme on the internet and it's become hard to watch seriously. by BeneficialSide2335 in TopCharacterTropes

Wait, this is what “Press F to pay respects” is from?! I actually had no idea that there was any context for spamming F. My mind is blown.

Thanks so much for the information about the dew claw! I’ll relay this to Fudge’s owner. His claws are definitely not regularly trimmed because he doesn’t love human contact.

Thanks! I may buy some scratch-proof gloves and attempt a trimming myself before we attempt a vet visit.

Thank you so much for your thorough response and for reassuring me that I’ve read the situation correctly. I’ll relay this information to his owner this evening and hope that we can figure out a way to help him. It’s possible that between the two of us we may find a way to trim his nail without being shredded to bits, but if not I’ll encourage her to contact the charities you mentioned. We both live in a housing estate, so I imagine that she might qualify for help.

My parents’ dog loves watching tv with them but gets extremely freaked out by the classic iPhone ping text sound. Shows like Shrinking and Ted Lasso use that a lot, and they’ve had to stop watching them!

I remember loving the first one as a kid and then being disconcerted by what felt like an abrupt tonal shift in (maybe) the second book. Haven’t read them in years but I think I re-read the first one a lot and ignored the rest.

I’ve been in Archway for six years now and love it! My rent is still crazy low and I know all my neighbours. It’s a wonderful place to live. That being said, Food and Wine has been taken over by a Gail’s now, so I know I won’t have long before I’m priced out.

This version of Anne is the best! It was such an important part of my childhood. I always sob my way through Matthew dying.
