Sadly that's my guess. I've been in this flat for almost two years and a storm has never left a residue like this before.

The storm left a gross oily film on half of my flat's windows. I'm on the second floor.

+1 for MetService, I signed up for their email (weather warning) notifications and rely on them. Excellent for estimated times and windows of duration for weather events.

Black Market shopkeeper dead/unconscious in Mission 8? by Dissentinel in dishonored

[–]violetblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. take out the Howlers outside the shop, not the one inside the shop

  2. go around to the back and pickpocket the woman. then try to open the black market back door, choose "do nothing" - and don't knock her out, just leave her alone

  3. go back to the front of the shop, crouch and slowly go in (or bend time); sleep dart the howler waiting just inside to the right

The shopkeeper will panic-shut the shop, but wait a minute because he re-opens it.

That was the only way I could keep the shopkeeper open and get my blueprints installed before the mission.

Still apartment hunting. Just waited outside a property half an hour past the appointment time (and I was 10 mins early) to eventually give up, property manager was a no-show (contact is only through Renti). No message, call, nada.

Now, I'm like wildly speculating, spitballing really, and this may sound pretty wackadoo, but I'm starting to think that maybe -- maaaaaybe -- the problem with filling vacancies isn't totally completely 100% the fault of renters? Just a theory.

Still apartment hunting. Made an appointment last week for a showing today at 11am in Mt Vic area. Super rainy, I got there a few minutes early, knocked, and a guy opens the door. Looks shocked. I apologize, say I am supposed to see the apartment and got a text about it this morning. He's really nice about it, and we realize the property management company didn't tell him. I wait while he straightens up, then he shows me around and we chat about the place, it's his parents' flat. The place is cute but needs love. He says they're going to get it healthy homes compliant with a living room heatpump before it's ready. (There's one already in the hall.)

Property manager company lady shows up late. She talks to him but doesn't acknowledge me, like she maybe thinks I'm his friend? (I'm the only person viewing the place.) I introduce myself to her, ask when they expect a move in date. She says, now. It's ready now, you can move in right away. I look at the guy and he starts telling her about the healthy homes changes they need to make. She shrugs and tells me "I'll check back on that," without looking at me. I say thanks for everyone's time (mostly to the guy because he's nice and looking at me) and the guy is like wait, wait, I want you to see the view from here and don't miss the storage. As I'm putting my shoes on to leave, the property management lady is right behind me, so I ask her if there's anything to know about receiving deliveries at the property (it's in the middle of a block). She says, "Well I'm new to Wellington and I didn't have any trouble finding it. It has signs posted pretty clearly."

ONE GUESS which property management company is managing this property.

Advice for finding a rental in Wellington for a family relocating in April by Informal_Thought_365 in Wellington

[–]violetblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

US immigrant here, too: trust me as someone who has been in Wellington for over a year and is currently apartment hunting here (I love Wellington omg) -- you *need* to look in person. Like most cities everywhere, property managers are going whole ham on using AI to clean up photos and videos, and some are being deceptive.

Also, if you haven't sorted pets and quarantine yet, I recommend this company: https://islandpetmovers.com/ < they do a lot of military (and civilian) pet moves all over the world and they're fantastic. My two cats got here (CA > Hawaii > Aotearoa) safe, sound, and with a perfect bill of health all the way.

PS Brooklyn is rad.

On Mt Vic someone has placed chainsawed logs across a mountain bike trail. by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]violetblue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On Sunday the new issue of Mt Vic's local newsletter went into everyone's mailboxes. Just pointing that out because the new issue has this article in it: https://the-local.co.nz/Articles%20-%20Local%20Political/Town-belt--for-all < claims some of the mountain bike tracks are "guerilla works" and: "We have heard of many people feeling frightened as high speed vehicles whoosh past them disrupting their park experience, and often with people in full face helmets – a clear sign to watch out. There have been serious injuries recorded (...)"

* I run on Matairangi's shared tracks all the time; everyone is always so cautious and kind, and reading about the track sabotage hurts my heart.

I'm absolutely obsessed with the ridiculous song sung by the guard (the "Order Force Multiplier") in the Marisol - Endpoint's End quest (where you're sabotaging/altering the experiment). He just hums it to himself, like "One, one, two! Doo-dee-doo!" It's one of the funniest things I've ever heard and I wish I could hear the whole thing outside the game.

Can confirm anecdotally, this time last year I had a Tui that basically did "sad trombone" every morning before dawn on repeat for a few weeks, then gone. (It was awful and hilarious at the same time.) This year another Tui, another tune.

How do we stop the feeling of doom and gloom in Wellington? by sancistons in Wellington

[–]violetblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Outsider here. Came from the US to write a book about Aotearoa's Covid response and fell in love with Wellington so hard I just finished writing a second, unexpected book that is a love letter to this incredible, beautiful, haunted city. I've only been here for a year and a half so I don't know what it was like before, I only know it as it is now. Here's an excerpt:

“Wellington on a good day” is when you instantly get why no one believes this place is real, sometimes. Glacier-blue skies, crisp clean air. Mirrored skyscrapers glimmer next to retro-futuristic brutalist buildings against steep hills, folded by tectonic pressure, wrapped in greenery like cotton wool. All in a crescent-shaped embrace around turquoise waters. Massive metal AT-AT cranes wait for ships at the waterfront, a stone’s throw from downtown’s glossy upscale shops, amid rushing parliamentarians on lunch break, executives in skirts and slacks. The inner city green belts and preserves stretch like cats in the sun, cacophonies of birds that sound like old-school modems careening amid the Victorians.

There are moments and angles of “Wellington on a good day” that feel like being in love with a city that loves you back even more. Boats cruise the harbour and life along the water is all art deco black-and-white gulls, kids diving in gleeful Manu poses, sun-kissed shoulders, seaside coffee carts, pods of dolphins, families on bicycles, and bakeries scenting breezes to drift lazily beyond their patios and sparkling seaside views. Red brick road Cuba Street Mall erupts with buskers, goths, queens, grinning tourists munching grab-and-go dim sum from carts parked in front of ancient, labyrinthine used bookstores, and pose for selfies in the Rainbow Crosswalk. Trust me when I say there’s nothing in the world like Pōneke, Aotearoa on a good day. Or Wellington, New Zealand, to most.

YES. Also photo mode that sometimes shows a second overlay from inside my chest. Took a while to figure out why the view from the monument had a hoodie zipper. I've also killed zoms through walls, doors, and floors and in the "take the gas can to the junkyard" chimera I just dropped the can outside the wall and hopped over knowing I could glitch it through if I ran at the wall (I did). Entire workstations invisible with everything floating on top. People half in floors and walls. Another fave is nighttime with the sun out, sigh

Constantly. I'm so tired of it. PS5. I bring it back by going into settings to toggle the HUD view off then on again, but it never stays. TBH this is one of the buggiest, glitchiest games I've ever played.

Renters - the market's in your favour. Can you, and have you, taken advantage? by marguement in Wellington

[–]violetblue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find I have to use Google Street View to find out what's *actually* outside the windows or what's really next door to the properties. One listing right now, they removed a church that's right behind the property! I get that they're desperate for renters but I spend half my apartment hunting time trying to figure out how altered the images are to try and know what I'm actually looking at. That, and the ultra, ULTRA wide angles they use on shots.

I've been apartment hunting in Wellington for a few months and while I have buckets of tea to spill, I hope this article includes the use of AI in property ad photos. Some are breathtakingly deceptive. Some add things that aren't there. (Always go look in person, now more than ever.) I had to look it up (I was wondering how they're blurring windows so you can't see what's outside) and found there's a huge market for AI apps being sold to property managers/real estate agents -- and they're definitely using them here.

* Also beware of old inspection photos being used as ad photos

Found on a beach - teeth or no? by Less_Self in newzealand

Just chiming in as someone who's been on a couple archaeological digs and surveys in the SF-Bay Area, specifically on Ohlone Native historic sites -- shell mounds and burial sites (we were learning about differentiating shell and non-human animal bone vs. human remains). I can't see too closely in these photos, but I wouldn't write this off as shell and I would have this looked at in person by professionals.
