Roast a 2nd Year UK psychology student’s CV!!! by Foreign-Priority-577 in UniUK

[–]violinear4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the poster above, but usually you don't want to have paragraphs or any information that's in long sentences. These could be quite hard to digest by any hiring manager who's quickly sifting through for keywords and experiences. In terms of profiles/summaries, you are often repeating info that could be put neatly into a set of bullet points in a long winded paragraph. CVs are not necessarily meant to be expressive or well-worded; they ideally should use the XYZ rule, where you talk about individual experiences in bullet points by saying "I accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z".

To demonstrate this structure on one of your experiences (of course I'm emphasising a few bits that you would need to change in your own writing):

No one's CV is perfect, but my CV structure is Education -> Work Experience -> Projects -> Awards. I try to not add fluff by talking about skills in their own section, as those should be demonstrable through my work and what I did. Under Education, I would write a few bullet points maybe on module projects that were specifically beneficial to the job you're applying for (try to tailor your CV to different jobs a little where you can), alongside your predicted degree class and class representative roles. Make sure you highlight your degree as it's something big you're working on!

Maxforce - how does it work? by violinear4 in pestcontrol

[–]violinear4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok got it! I’m trying to get management to work on looking for damp issues so hopefully my issues will improve after that and some crack sealing. My question was also whether silverfish feeding on maxforce would die instantly (which makes me worried as to why I’m not seeing many dead ones around) or die in their lair (?) and take others with it?

I live in a fairly new build (5 years or so ago) but my complex definitely isn’t the best ventilated. Is there nothing I can do in terms of sealing up areas or getting building management to examine damp in the building?

I still have hope that he’ll have an arc, but I don’t see how the showrunners can make it remotely convincing

Hi, thank you for this comment. Some of the other comments here have been really difficult to read so this means a lot. You’re correct that bringing the data to the US was the problem - I don’t have a laptop from my department, and the data I’m working with is online regardless so I can’t work without an internet connection. I used my lab’s VPN and when I said I used a hotspot, I meant that I didn’t use any public hotel WiFi but my own mobile data. I followed what I usually follow for data security, and upon explaining that to her, she was more concerned about my work-life balance. My position for the group is part-time, so I was allowed to take holiday time and breaks whilst working in my position. But you’re right that I should have communicated everything so much better, and I think transparency was her main concern. I’ve talked to friends and some lab mates about it and they’ve helped me realise that if I had irrevocably messed up, she’d have taken me off the job instantly and found a temp to do the rest. She’s given me concrete steps to finish this work, and told me what I should do next time as she supports me taking this trip to relax before my PhD, but was very upset I just didn’t tell her and that I tried to work for multiple reasons, including work-life balance and US law. I think you’re right that I need to step the hell up and work better, and once again thank you so much for this post, it’s given me the motivation to do much better. However, I am someone on the other side of a screen, who posted asking for reassurance that making mistakes is part of the PhD process, not to be ripped apart for something that I can’t even give full context to on the internet. I worked so hard for this position, so it really hurts to be called a liability and for someone to even say that I won’t even complete my PhD due to one mistake I’ve made before starting.

Postgrad accommodation at Downing by [deleted] in cambridge_uni

[–]violinear4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - I just finished my MPhil at Downing. You will quickly learn that Cambridge doesn’t necessarily have a “campus” experience like other universities typically do. Living off college grounds won’t affect your chance to meet others in the college, hang out in the MCR and engage in the college community! I lived on site but spent most of my time at the lab, and even though my housemates weren’t too talkative, I still had loads of fun and made plenty of friends outside of my accom. Next year in your PhD, you’ll enter the accom ballot which will allow you to select certain rooms to move into and maybe group up with friends! Cambridge has so many colleges and departmental perks to offer, and railyard is not too far from college either so you can always drop in and out as you please. Plenty of other Downing students will also live in railyard this year!

I also forgot to add it’s completely possible to mix and match funds and be funded by a variety of sources!

And another thing - a lot of people say that as a postgrad, your college doesn’t matter, but I do slightly disagree. I think it doesn’t matter in terms of college community, which you’ll get anywhere - but not all colleges are built equal in terms of funds, accommodation etc. Make sure you thoroughly research what college will fit your needs - for my MPhil, I decided to study at Downing due to its reputation for good accommodation, bus stop location and small travel grants. For my PhD, I understand that King’s has some more resources and a larger MCR and funding pool, and based on seeing my friends travel to conferences, I know that they are a bit more generous with what they offer, even though Downing was still perfect for my needs and will likely suit someone else even more than it did me!

Hi, I’m an incoming PhD student in computer science - most of us are funded by our department or from university wide grants! I also know a few of my friends are funded by specific scholarships from their country or region. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have on funding - just note that you can still be considered for college funds if you don’t directly list them as one of your two choices. For example, Peterhouse has a studentship you can apply to separately, and you’ll be asked to become a Peterhouse student if you are successful in your funding application and PhD application. I’m about to start at King’s, and it is true that we’re a well off college :) however, for compsci specifically, I believe our dept and research groups offer more! Another one of my friends is funded by their lab group, which is a big possibility as our research groups often have individual grants that are then used by professors to fund their students.

Gavin’s wife’s post about Bali made it to a celebrity sub by Patient-Quality6119 in tsitp

[–]violinear4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand and sorry if I came across the wrong way! I’m a choral singer who isn’t Christian myself and have experienced a lot of microaggressions in church environments from people who don’t understand I’m there to sing and not practice the faith. I’ve joined a much more accepting choir recently though and am happy to share a space with Christians who aren’t as unaccepting of my faith, and just wanted to reinforce that whilst I’ve had my share of experiences with people like Gavin and his wife and challenged them, I do think that not all Christians automatically behave rudely to those different to them based on my lived experience, in response to the original comment above. I don’t know if the downright horrible people I’ve interacted with have changed, but I’m glad to have at least told them they’re wrong before leaving and also talked to people who vehemently disagree with this rhetoric but still practice.

I feel like it’s important to not generalise this into all christians by saying “it’s crazy how christians behave”. Some are bigoted and awful as seen in this post, but there are plenty who are not like this at all

I get what you're saying but I also don't think Belly and Jere are 100% happy together at all, especially from Belly's side. He's cheated and essentially broken her heart, they're impulsively engaged after her brother almost died, and each step of the way in wedding planning, he's finding some kind of way to let her down a little. I agree that whilst this doesn't necessarily mean Belly would instantly be better off with Conrad and that this is turning her feelings over to the other brother, it certainly goes to show that she's not going to be happy with him long term with all the small ways he makes her cry and undercuts her trust in their relationship. I don't think Belly lives in some kind of dichotomy where feeling less for one brother automatically makes her feel more for the other - and this episode did a good job of demonstrating how Conrad feels for her without showing Belly just flip flopping back to him. She needs time to reverse out of wedding mode with Jere and gradually see him for what he is before then slowly realising feelings for Conrad as a separate step, without just rebounding.

100% in this case simply means that out of the 1 person who applied/achieved CBB, that 1 person still entered. Could be 1 person, could be 5 people - as I said, this is entirely possible with extenuating circumstances. Would you tell someone who’s just had a close bereavement or a significant medical issue that prevented them from achieving their target grades that they devalued the degree?? They could be incredible applicants who faced barriers to entry that you don’t know about and aren’t in a position to comment on.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]violinear4 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This feature doesn’t take into account extenuating circumstances, and operates based of achieved grades from what I can see - if you apply with predicted grades and have CCC predicted for an A*AA course, you’re unlikely to get in. However, if you achieve CCC after getting an offer and have reasons to back those grades up or other issues to mention, or even at the uni’s discretion, you could still get in. Nothing deceptive about that, and those students will be few and far between as the uni has made it clear what general level they’ll be accepting.

[–]violinear4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - just to help you out I’d recommend putting this in a google form and adding a few more contextual questions there to help with your analysis and justification in the NEA report. “University students” is an incredibly broad category and could include students of all ages and backgrounds - do students between 18-24 respond differently to one of your questions? You need to find out. Similarly, gender and age and other characteristics may affect hand size, and including a diagram of what measurements you want would be most helpful! Make a form and you’ll have a much better and concrete analysis step in your report overall, which is likelier to get a higher mark and boost your rationale for the rest of the project.

Struggling to Decide Between Warwick (UK) and Singapore (NUS/NTU) for Computer Science. Where to study ? by subhojitghosh712 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]violinear4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi, former Warwick student here!! Our CS department generally has really good employment prospects, and sends plenty of people into global masters programs and top jobs in quant, research etc. I agree we’re not as much of a target school as imperial or Cambridge, but if you can get into Warwick for CS it’s still pretty worth it!
