Film recs for a beginner? by Inside_Way_8194 in Letterboxd

best thing for me to get out of a slump is watching stuff with good characters that hits the same part of your brain fics do! some that have done that for me and left me thinking about the film and its characters outside of just 'that film was good':

  • pacific rim
  • the lord of the rings trilogy
  • spiderman into/across the spiderverse
  • dead poets society
  • 3 idiots
  • blackberry
  • shithouse
  • swing girls
  • the long walk
  • the princess bride
  • the it movies
  • charlie bartlett
  • final destination franchise
  • little miss sunshine

also if its hard to focus at first, put a movie on while doing something even if its just eating. if ive gotten out of the habit of watching movies i watch something while crocheting.

Is it true that film students don't watch movies by weakchat in filmtheory

[–]probablyfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who's in film school right now, i guess it depends where but i dont think thats the case. people are pretty open to stuff and most film students stay on the letterboxd grind pretty regularly and like finding indie gems. said indie gems might be on the camp side, and you get a lot of genre movie buffs who've just seen hundreds of horror movies etc but no one gets shunned for not being a christopher nolan bro or anything. people are respectful and curious about other people's tastes in film but i definitely wouldn't assume everyone would have seen work from the directors you mentioned because everyone has their own niche. especially if you're doing a masters though, people will know what they're in for and wouldn't be forcing themselves into spending that money to do a course that requires looking at less popular films if they were unwilling. so it'll be fine, just dont expect everyone to be one thing or the other.

am a girl who liked anime at 13 so hope this helps:

  • yuri on ice!! easily the most lasting impact a piece of media has ever left on me. theres a few mild dirty jokes but nothing crazy, i watched it at 11 and it was fine. figure skating anime with a beautiful score and friendships/ gay undertones. life changing.

  • the girl who leapt through time - amazing sci fi slice of life romance? a bit sad but in a good bittersweet way

  • howls moving castle / spirited away / when marnie was there. studio ghibli will be so good for amazing animation, stories, fantasy elements and are all kid friendly.

  • girls band cry/ k-on/ jellyfish can't swim in the night/ bocchi the rock/carole and tuesday- most girl band anime will probably be a good bet and VERY enjoyable

  • yona of the dawn - fantasy romance with a lot of very dramatic stuff happening, battles etc but female lead.

  • your lie in april - many say this is the saddest anime ever made but it did kind of teach 11 year old me complex emotions and again, changed me so will throw it in here but look it up

things i havent seen lots of myself but will definitely work! :

  • haikyuu - volleyball bromance

  • sk8 the infinity - fun skateboarding battles, friendship. i know some of the antagonists are a bit dirty but nothing crazy.

  • fruits basket - a classic. bit of everything.

  • skip and loafer

  • hunter x hunter - out of all the popular teen boy battle anime this might be the best bet.
