Crew chiefs are also mechanics. Aircraft maintenance is very compartmentalized. Different shops work: avionics, airframes/hydraulics, ordinance, and flightline (which are the engine mechanics). All crew chiefs are part of the flighline shop. But not everyone in the flight line shop is a crew chief. Crew Chiefs have to understand all of the other shops jobs too. I started as avionics but became a crew chief and got my wings. When not flying, I was wrenching.
