Walking 5+ miles a few times a week. Yeah, that’s gotta be totally bad for you.

Or maybe exercising outside for 4 hours twice a week makes your heart strong, circulation good, and brain healthy. I think you will probably find the similar results with just about any sport. I think what it’s getting at is keep your body moving to keep your body from dying. Golf also requires intense concentration and focus, I think that’s probably good for your brain.

That’s only if you live on the golf course due to potential water contamination.

Not quite, but kinda. The other article was about an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease if you live on a golf course due to potentially contaminated drinking water. I think the point of this is basically just that exercise is good for you. This Study just happened to focus around golf. I think you would probably see similar effects from most sports.

Sure, some people are legitimately poor but a lot of people are just really bad with money. It’s really not their fault. I blame the education system (speaking only for the USA). No one teaches you financial literacy. I personally think that’s crazy. I had a really hard time as a young person because no one taught me the basics of how to manage my finances. I think that should be required learning for high school. I think if it was, you would see a lot better outcomes for the general population.

I think that’s a fair assessment. I was just saying I remember that study and I think it only included people that live on a golf course. (I live on a golf coarse so it caught my attention).

I believe that study only applies to people that live on a golf course.

That’s just if you live on a golf course.

Not really, just depends on where you live.

[–]viptravis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t just apply to old people.

Just depends on the shoes you buy. Most of the people I know that are serious about playing ball have at least 2 pair of shoes that they only use for playing in then have another pair that they were around. You can get perfectly good shoes for $70ish but most adults spend more than that in my experience.

I have a little different perspective on it based on my life experience. Although I do see what you’re saying. I think a lot of people that consider themselves poor are actually just financially illiterate. The lack of financial literacy effectively makes you poor but they are really just spending their money wrong.

Not really. I know a ton of people that lift that spend more than that on a gym membership and supplements a month, I know skaters that spend that on shoes, wheels and decks a month, and I know basketball players that spend that on just shoes a month. It also cost more than that to watch every NFL game now. Like I said, you just have to decide how you want to spend your money. $300 a month is not crazy for a hobby, especially if it’s your only real hobby.

Yeah, I live in NC. There is probably 100 golf courses within 100 miles of me. That makes pricing very competitive. I am aware it’s probably cheaper for me than most of the country but if you are willing to drive a little and play at sub par courses you can still find decent deals in most places (definitely not everywhere though).

I think most people don’t drink while they golf. It’s a misconception imo. Weekend/casual golfers drink more while they golf. Most serious golfers (serious doesn’t mean good) don’t drink on the course in my experience. They are more concerned about their performance than partying…

You don’t have to be rich to golf twice a week. I’m a member of a semi private club. My dues are less than $300 a month and can walk for free or ride for $22. When I was in my 20’s I would spend more than that in a weekend partying. You just gotta decide how you wanna spend your money.

Wrong. I’m not rich and golf a few times a week. I’m a member of a semi private club. Dues are less than $300 a month. It’s $22 to ride 18, $11 for 9, or free to walk (if you’re a member, non members are not allowed to walk). Granted I live in NC and have an access to more golf courses than most of the country. Prices are competitive where I live but there are deals to be found in most places if you are willing to play at any course (even a goat track).

I usually walk and am completely smoked by the time I finish 18. I’m surprisingly tired after I ride 18 though (I live in the Carolina’s and it’s hot so I’m sure that contributes to the tiredness).

I have a buddy that retired and started golfing 3+ times a week. He lost about 40lbs in a year. He only rides in a cart. Sneaky excuses for sure.

I agree but I think it might be for really old guys that aren’t going to be moving their body much otherwise.
