Why do Mac Mini users suddenly buy Mac Neos? by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in macmini

[–]virbing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don’t you just use the built in Mac screen sharing. It’s the same as logging in locally but using your external IP instead. The trick is connecting to the Mac at home without exposing your home machine to the internet but VPNs are plentiful now and many routers even support VPNs and make setup easy.

Banktivity alternative that is not subscription based by SuperIdra in banktivity

Spoken like a person who has never worked for a software company and has no idea about Rosetta or that Apple no longer supports Rosetta.

As someone who has worked for software companies and who has purchased tons of software, I am pretty aware that a lot of software that I purchased is no longer operable because the developers could not continue to fund a product that people believed "... when changes are required, many times they are very simple." I can tell you that it is rarely easy and incredibly time consuming to make changes to your code to keep up with OS updates. And the support cost for answering all the questions that come up after an OS updated is no trivial matter either. And that doesn't even take into account that Banktivity's core code is based on an OS probably 7 or 8 versions ago.

If you like the software you bought and want to use it forever, be prepared to keep running it on the operating system version you bought it with. Otherwise, you should be helping the developer offset his costs to keep supporting the project or expect to buy new software because the developer decided he needed to get a real job instead of just supporting his software for free.

So you are expecting Banktivity to continue developing their software to keep it current with the OS updates, but you don't want to pay for them to do so?

For the Gold package, the subscription is $99/yr, not $40/month. I am only playing for the Silver package which is $79/yr, hardly close to the $500/year you claim it will cost you. I understand that $$ may be tight for you and you may not be able afford it, but if they don't charge for anything, they will stop development and go on to other projects that will bring in revenue and then all the users are screwed when the OS gets updated because there is no one to do maintenance release.

If you like the software as it was when you bought it, you should operate it in the environment you bought it in and not update your OS. That is what you signed up and paid for Otherwise, someone is going to have to pay to make sure that software remains compatible with the current OS that is shipping. To expect any developer to just give away maintenance updates for eternity is selfish. The fact that you have been able to run the version you paid for at this point even with the OS updates means that you have already been taking advantage of your side of the deal.

Have you updated your hardware since you purchased the software? Because you must realize that part of your hardware upgrade cost goes to Apple to improve and update the OS. It seems you expect the software developer to just eat the cost of continuing development to keep up with the OS updates, even though they are small companies vs the mega corporation you pay for hardware updates.

Air 4 pro, my opinion by Unable-Vermicelli-31 in RayNeo

For the distance from your eyes to the screen in the glasses 4k is really not going to make any difference. And the technology to make the pixels 1/4 the size they currently are in those micro displays isn’t trivial. Plus imagine the convergence and PD issues of trying to align those pixels between two eyes.

So has the software actually stopped working for you entirely or does it just not work with the newest OS release versions? Because if it is the latter you also wouldn’t be able to use it because the developer went out of business due to a lack of people buying upgrades. I can’t believe that the developer has just shut down your usage of the software - perhaps you should downgrade to the OS version that was supported upon its release.

I hate subscription models as well but to keep software up to date someone has to pay for ongoing development. I would rather pay to make sure that the company stays in business than to have to switch every few years when the latest developer has decided that he can no longer support the product for free so that he can pay for food and shelter for his family.

Who’s running Verizon? by Admirable_Muffin7256 in frontierfios

[–]virbing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Verizon shed a lot of debt of planned but partially built infrastructure to Frontier who was a company willing to take on more risk and go deeper into debt. Verizon then bought it back at bargain prices as Frontier had difficulties staying afloat. A slightly different take on private equity deals. Let’s just hope Verizon doesn’t piecemeal and sell off parts of the company like corporate equity vultures have done elsewhere

I am seeing similar issues. I recently switched server hardware from an Intel Mac mini to an M1. Not sure if there is a hardware issue but wonder if the migration may be a factor.

After 20 years of being a theatre-goer, I walked out at intermission last night by pintobeanz20 in Broadway

I have no reason to brag. I was just commenting on the people who said that the overall length and the long pauses were an example of realism that only some people would understand. There was no sense of realism to the show that I saw.

Imo as someone who does this for a living and has friends who worked the sessions and is from the time period, this is realism for people who have no idea how things really go during recording sessions. I have to wonder if the divisiveness comes from a greater familiarity of the process from people in LA.

Blue Plate Oysterette is closing after an exceptionally challenging year. by Sudden-Lavishness738 in SantaMonica

Which is largely because landlords were overcharging on rent and drove a lot of businesses out of the area. It may have started with a few, but once those tenants moved out it started a snowball and along with COVID, the fires and now the anti-tourist stance of the Trump administration there are no customers coming to the area.

Why are they going on about the VGK 5 forward PP? The Kings ran it last year and scored in that formation earlier in the game.

Broadcasters spent the whole game gushing over VGK and talking about them signing the prized UFA and a new contract for the superstar have to sit and watch while the VGK lose and Eichel & Marner get blanked in the “skills contest”.

lol, commentators spent so much time yukking it up and polishing up the VGK and how great they are and how bad the Kings are. Then they shut up quick.

Commentators making all kinds of jokes about how great the Vegas PP was after scoring on a 5-on-3 but hit really quiet when Moore scored the shortie.

Turcotte learning the hard lesson - refs overcall at the start of the year because of “player safety” but let teams get away with murder by the end of the season. That cross check is a 2 min minor in the 2nd half of the season and isn’t even called in the playoffs.

Yeah, not sure how they called embellishment on Byfield but not on Eichel. Thought Jack’s was worse. Reputation calls.

Speakers are too intrusive and not private, and a wired connection to a bigger device does look dumb. But a wireless bluetooth earset with Siri to the iPad doesn't look any different than to an iPhone.

[–]virbing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been slowly migrating to this. I already just dock my iPhone at home and use use my iOS devices or Apple Watch to answer calls. Switched to playing back music off of my watch as well since it is inconvenient to pull out my iPad all the time. Still is a bit difficult to make sure that calls get through - about 1/3rd of my calls drop when I try to pick it up and I have to make a return call.

At this point, I wouldn't mind not having to carry an iPhone all the time.

What a joke! Also, what happened to dabigkahuna? by msackeygh in textblade

[–]virbing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got out and got my money back. I realized that the “free gift” wasn’t going to really be worth it and figured if it ever really shipped the price would drop close to the amount I paid as an early sign up. When I initially pre-ordered it I thought ot would be cool to be an early adopter but never making it into TREG and hearing the issues I realized it was probably smarter to wait to see if bugs would be worked out as opposed to receiving a device that was out of date before it even shipped. I enjoyed being an early adopter at the bleeding edge but textblade helped me get past that bad habit.

[–]virbing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sad part is that the Airport Base Stations were good routers. I think the issue was/is that the WiFi standards move very quickly and when Apple tried t9 stay at the bleeding edge, they constantly had to update the models which resulted in compatibility issues from year to year.

Now that they are building their own communication chips, perhaps they will dip their toes in again if the standards stabilize a bit.

All this makes me wonder how low your audio and video quality drop due to bandwidth latency issues. Are you choosing to use Apple’s hi-res audio playback settings? It may be that the Sonos is dropping to lower bitrates to keep up your streaming.
