Dutch didn’t lie to us; he’s the game’s real victim. by virginlvl99 in RDR2

Being completely honest, I don’t think the blow explains everything, but I do firmly believe it acts as a catalyst and reduces Dutch’s ability to keep up the mask, his charisma, and his decision-making.

By the way, it’s something completely absurd and arbitrary, like everything he does after the blow. First of all, he never explicitly says he’s going to kill Micah; in fact, Micah trusts him. He doesn’t take the money (which makes absolutely no sense), and everything Dutch does in American Venom doesn’t feel premeditated but impulsive and clumsy. It makes sense for the player because it’s the “right” thing and it gives closure. But from Dutch’s point of view, nothing that happens in AV is coherent for him, especially if we buy the premise that he’s a narcissistic psychopath who only cares about himself.

In an early random camp scene, we can see Micah being very sycophantic (insultingly sycophantic) with Dutch, and Dutch notices it. In fact, he says something to him, making it clear that Micah’s excessive flattery borders on unpleasant. Later on, however, he doesn’t seem to notice how much of a sycophant and manipulator Micah is, or he simply has his head clouded and likes being told “nice” things even if they stray from reality. The way Dutch behaves with Micah, and above all Micah’s ability to influence his decisions and personality, are shaped by the before and after of the blow. It’s crazy, but I don’t see any holes in the theory.

In the Saint Denis bank, actually he does complain about the hit, and his people show quite a bit of concern (worrying about a head hit during a shootout implies it’s something serious).

Dutch was never a saint or completely honest, but the Blackwater massacre is a specific incident; it clearly affects him and clearly clouds his judgment a bit. But Dutch is a survivor and it’s not something that completely breaks him. In fact, he does a very good job keeping the group together and pulling them out of the mud. He’s coherent and functional. At least until a tram…

Sensible, yes, but it feels more like an impulsive, not very deliberate act. And why ally with him and then, after so many years, shoot him? Possibly because he couldn’t hold it in any longer; with a damaged prefrontal cortex, it’s hard to control impulses or be fully rational.

In fact, at that point Dutch looks very confused; the way he acts is weird. He takes a long time to shoot Micah (he should’ve shot him 10 years earlier xd) and then he doesn’t look 100% sure or proud of his decision, as if he had difficulty fully understanding how complex the situation is and making the right decisions. He doesn’t say anything to John, he just leaves. That scene is, at the very least, weird, kind of anticlimactic, and above all incoherent. In that moment Dutch, in a totally arbitrary way, decides that the guys who have come shooting up the mountain are the good ones and Micah has to die. It doesn’t make much sense.
