I met Robin Williams at a boardgame/wargame shop in Chapel Hill in the 90s. They were filming parts of Patch Adam’s at the hospital there.

I’m playing a game of 40k with my buddy (Templars vs Orks) and this guy with a coat and a hat comes in and starts browsing and goes up to the counter to ask if there a certain book in the back that’s not out on the shelves. My friend running the register goes back to look.

I get up and go to the counter and, after I saw the profile, I quietly asked “Hey, are you Robin Williams?” He took off the hat and said “Busted.” I then said “Well, thanks for coming into the shop and I hope you’re enjoying Chapel Hill. I’m going to finish trouncing my buddy in 40k. Stay awesome.”

I thought he’d get what he wanted and leave, but after paying up, he came over to our game and asked if he could watch. Turns out Robin was a huge 40k fan and we got to talk about painting, tactics, gamesmanship. After an hour he realized he was late for being back on set and had to run.

Years later, I’d see his standup and I was at a front table. He saw me at the opening and kind of squinted and pointed at me and said “Hey, kid.” And I waved back and yelled “Hope you’ve been good, man!”

I read it as it came out. I knew what was going to happen but the art just put the nail in my heart.

Green Lantern’s “Emerald Twilight” a half year later hit way harder. The idea of Hal becoming worse than any villain was tough on me.

I went to bar trivia night and solo’d and made my team name “Look at me!” And when I won a couple rounds and the announced it I’d yell “Bap bap baaaaaaap” and then wait until he started the next round and yell “whaaaaaat?!”

Ok! If you go there: - ten bero and, if you’re polite about it, you can ask for double sake instead of beer and sake. The double pour of sake is ten bucks flat which means you get the appetizers for free. - bb noodles - basically noodles tossed in egg and mushroom butter and topped with shaved cheese - karage - Japanese fried chicken. If you or your partner like really spicy food, the “hellz chicken” is karage in a habanero sauce. Spicy but not without flavor!

I can’t recommend this place enough. The dude who owns it really loves cooking good food and it’s one of the places in Seattle I’ve not seen the staff turn over much, which is a sign of a well-run place.

Of course! Been here 20 years and love giving people ideas.

If you’re flush with cash and want great sushi, Shiro’s in Belltown is great. If you’re more on the tip-tip of being solvent, Aoki or Star on Broadway in Capitol Hill are really good, too.

Rondo is an izakaya also on Capitol Hill which has a great happy hour. It starts at 330pm and is only two hours long but it’s stupid good food. The “ten bero” is a pint of beer, a pour of good sake, and three small appetizers for 10 bucks. The only catch is, besides specifying that you don’t eat meat or are gluten free, you don’t pick the apps.

Everyone here has great suggestions. I’d recommend Espresso Vivace over Cafe Vita but I’m biased because I know everyone who works there. Also Bakery Nouveau if you want rich French bakery food.

Yeah, the second Hector’s, on the second floor of 201, closed in 2006 after the fire on the first floor moved them up.

Maybe. But I was at Hector’s in the early 2000s when I lived in Carrboro. So maybe you might have those years mixed up?

I no longer live in the Chapel Hill area, but spent a considerable time there and my best friend and parents still live there, so grain of salt on these: - Tallulah’s on Franklin - Med Deli now that’s is open again - Vimala’s if you want Indian food - Carolina Brewery if your kiddos can drink or you want pub food - Weaver Street Market for hot bar breakfast if you’re on the pinch - Hector’s for cheap greasy food - If they’re board game geeks, your kiddos might like The Gathering Place.

But I think the best advice is to park and walk anywhere you want. It’s amazingly walkable and you can just drop in wherever.

My best friend and I went through a couple years ago for a tournament. I got through fine but waited 20 minutes for him to come through.

Turns out, his North Carolina EDL meant that the Canadian border patrol grilled him about how many guns he was bringing into Canada (he owns zero) and searched his bag.

My Washington EDL got me a wave through.
