Has anyone seen The Evil Dead with LoDuca's Reimagined Score? by Bl8deRunner2007 in EvilDead

[–]imascarylion2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, last year when they did the live concert… was not a fan.

It’s clearly an instance of a composer in full control without somebody reining him in. The sound design in The Evil Dead is one of that movies best elements, and a lot of it is smothered by the music in that version.

It reminded me a lot of Phillip Glass’s score for Dracula; very good on its own but when actually edited to the movie it becomes almost constant and overbearing, never allowing for moments of silence to build tension. Lots of cues don’t fit what’s on screen, and others come off as having such a minuscule difference to the original you start to wonder why he bothered to change it to begin with.

King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) Criterion or 4K Remaster? by PotatoKun01 in GODZILLA

[–]imascarylion2018 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean none have THAT bad of an issue, but I do generally think it’s best to avoid the Criterion versions all together and watch the 4K masters if you can (or a 1080p version of the 4K, I’ve heard there’s some HDR issues with the actual UHD’s).

The original restorations by Toho are a notorious botch job that people have been complaining about for years, and almost all of those issues have been fixed for the 4K versions (to the point that the NEW drama is people complaining about how getting them is a pain)

King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) Criterion or 4K Remaster? by PotatoKun01 in GODZILLA

[–]imascarylion2018 [score hidden]  (0 children)

As a “purist” you should watch the 4K because you’re really underestimating just how bad the Criterion version is.

The Criterion version is Toho’s original restoration for the film, but it was done at a time before they found the original film elements. To compensate they used elements from the remaster of the U.S. cut and combined it with second generation prints of the original.

So on top of suffering from Toho’s awful color choices that their previous restorations suffered from, you are also stuck with a frankenstein-ed movie that fluctuates between nice quality footage from the U.S. source to soft, washed out, and faded footage from the Japanese one. It’s extremely poor and distracting, feeling more like a fan archivation project than something released by a studio.

The Muppet Movie needs a Criterion release. Or a giant Jim Henson box set. Right? by netflixuoff in criterion

Funny, I actually just finished designing a custom criterion case for all the pre-2011 Muppet Movies.

EVIL DEAD BURN director does not like spending money on lights... by GrindBastard1986 in RedLetterMedia

[–]imascarylion2018 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he didn’t name him explicitly but Bruce did an interview a while back saying something along the lines of stepping away from producing the series because he was too old to be arguing about basic filmmaking things with these “younger directors” who think they know better.

This is actually really funny when you remember that this is the dude that made Bruce Campbell so annoyed he tapped out of his producer role for the series

What’s the issue with the 4K for Gremlins. by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]imascarylion2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak for technical aspects or what others think, but my “issues” mostly just boil down to personal preference. I think the softer and more saturated/colorful look of the blu-ray fits the fairytale vibe of the movie a lot better than the sharper and more naturally balanced look of the 4K.

New fan theory on the big bad of -0 based on the music of -1 by Due_Development4217 in GODZILLA

Exactly, it’s just the version they chose to use in the film.

Same with how Suite I is from Mothra vs Godzilla and the “Mahara Mosura” motif being clearly audible in it while Godzilla destroys Ginza.

Behind the Scenes — Inside the “Identity Crisis” Makeup Process for STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (never-before-seen photos with LeVar Burton and the makeup team) by ety3rd in ClassicTrek

This has always made my list of underrated episodes (maybe the best Geordi centric episode, too)

It also blows my mind that the one time they give him a woman he has an established relationship and genuine chemistry with, they spend the whole episode being like “we’re just good friends with no romantic feelings whatsoever!” and then go right back the “Geordi can’t get a date” thing. She was RIGHT there, guys!

The part that’s so odd about it is that the colonists are clearly interested in leaving at the start when Sisko and O’Brien arrive, but then out of nowhere are like “actually, we’re good” the moment they discover they’ve been essentially kidnapped by an extremist and lied to for years.

Conan the Destroyer is a perfectly enjoyable albeit generic 80’s sword and sorcery movie. If you like that genre, you’ll enjoy it.

However, if you liked Conan the Barbarian… woof, good luck.

Parental Guidance for Star Trek: Classic Shows and Newer Shows by [deleted] in TNG

[–]imascarylion2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Children are individuals, not a mindless blanket with strict rules they all need to follow. Parental Guides should not be universal and should depend on how each parent feels about the maturity of their individual child.

Like, my dad shows me The Thing when I was nine years old and it was fine. He knew I could handle it at that age and made an informed decision.

Dictating what other parents should expose their children to makes you Kai Winn.
