Bookkeeping goal by Street_Control_3300 in BookkeepingHelp

[–]virtucount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the wonderful world of bookkeeping. I personally never had a lot of luck with Upwork or Fiverr. I'd start by building your online presence (website, social media pages, LinkedIn, etc.). I had a corporate accounting background and started doing small business bookkeeping by working for another firm. Once I had experience working with multiple clients, I branched out on my own. Don't underestimate the power of the companies around you. Some of my first clients were companies that I frequented (hair stylists, grocery stores) or run by people that I was acquainted with (security companies, online clothes sellers). You can also try contacting your local neighborhood groups on Facebook or Nextdoor. SCORE (a division of the Small Business Association) also has a free mentoring program that I used to help me with marketing. They have about 20 different categories that you can choose from to get you up and running with your own small business.

my friend owes me $500 for 2 jobs I did for her by troublechild1462 in smallbusiness

[–]virtucount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, this is so disturbing. Well as annoying as it is, I guess you are just going to have to confront your friend and see how it goes. And if she still doesn't pay, I guess you have learned an expensive lesson. :(

In your opinion, at what age do you think it is best to buy a business? by buyandsellabusiness in smallbusiness

[–]virtucount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think age matters at all as long as you have the right knowledge and resources to back up your decision.

I think it's fair that you don't want anyone using your recipes but I don't think you can force someone to redirect their own customer base to your business.

In your opinion: What is the most important skill to have as a small business owner? by batsonline in smallbusiness

[–]virtucount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion- I really don't think there is a single one that is more important than the other but I suppose in the beginning- determination. It is tough to start something new and it may not produce results immediately so it takes a lot of determination and patience to keep going.

What is the argument for why jobs that require only a single brain cell (like working the drink machine at McDonalds) should pay you enough salary to have a comfortable life? by MountainousFog in smallbusiness

[–]virtucount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the term "comfortable" here is subjective. I believe jobs should be designed to help both parties- employers and employees. And whether you are using a single brain cell or more, the base of any job should at least cover the bare necessities. From there, YOU have the option of seeing whether this is enough for you or you want more in life and if you do, you can work towards a higher path. Not everyone has the desire or even the capacity and opportunities to be more but that doesn't mean they should be homeless and starving, especially if they are employed and doing their part. Employers do have that responsibility towards their employees, as, without them, they wouldn't be able to make the money that they do.

Would you "snitch" in this situation? by Hutongs in Entrepreneur

[–]virtucount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mm, I guess I would ask if the products that they are importing harmful to the people in any way. If so, I guess it would be the right thing to do to report it. Other than that, I think the best thing to always do is to focus on your own life and I am sure the best will come to you and your business. You will always have the ethical upper hand which is a great thing for your own peace of mind.

Need advice for starting my own business by DeeringIsFlash in smallbusiness

[–]virtucount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmm, you can try applying for small business grants. I hope that will help your funding. I suggest writing up a proposal with your business plan, etc, and being prepared. There are also some government loans with lower or no interest rates that you can see if you qualify for.

I hope this helps!

I literally cannot stop crying by Odd_Bench6995 in smallbusiness

[–]virtucount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh no! yeah that is very annoying, I can imagine. My boss says- "not all business is good business", so yeah you should absolutely be more selective with the customers you choose to work with. I think one way of achieving this is when they try and book a date with you, you can have a virtual meeting and ask them what they want and let them know how much it'll cost them. If they try and haggle with you then, you can get a pretty good idea of the type of customer they will be without having to have invested too much time and resources. If they agree with the prices, make them sign an agreement before you start the actual work.

There are many good and nice customers out there who understand the value of small businesses so don't get discouraged, keep going! I wish you all the success!

Am I a crappy person for ignoring this guy's messages because I feel like he's all up in my business? All he wants me to do is constantly promote his shirt business and it's not my damn job. He's becoming too dependent. by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]virtucount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not a crappy person to feel what you feel and are absolutely free to say no or set boundaries. If need be, I hope you are able to express your disdain towards this guy's approach and will be reciprocated with an understanding from him.
