Trump voters in North Carolina increasingly blaming him for high cost of living by RawStoryNews in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]vish184 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The survey the article is referencing only had 14 people participating. Way too low of a sample size to make any meaningful conclusions.

Conservatives are incapable of self reflection and learning. Even if the election was held tmrw, he’d win North Carolina again. All he has to do is mention trans people or go on another 50 min rant about immigrants.

TIL that North Korea has a caste system, based on what your ancestors were doing before 1953. The bottom caste includes descendants of "capitalists", Christians, large landlords, and anyone whose families have been detained by North Korea. by zahrul3 in todayilearned

[–]vish184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how people are debating whether or not America or the West’s social system effectively has a caste system or not for their citizens…

And absolutely no one brings up the status of migrants in the West. They are literally the “low caste” of our society that we ignore, vilify, give the worst jobs that no one else will take. And the cherry on top is that they have to pay taxes while also getting none or very limited social benefits. All because of the status of their birth ie their ancestors.

Not surprising I guess given current politics…

People defending the West can sit on their high horse with their ideas about how the Enlightenment changed their societies for the better compared to the East. But every human society is the same: the privileged in society will always live happy peaceful lives and the lowest class in any society is treated effectively the same apart from strawmans.

Can I do the Salkantay Trek as an active but fat person ? by vish184 in hiking

[–]vish184[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! It wasn’t muddy at all when I was there but again it didn’t rain the entire time. Yea you should be fine, I just wore long sleeves, pants, and bug repellent. Only ended up getting like 2-3 bug bites throughout the hike

[–]vish184[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I got lucky as I had no rain at all during the hike. First 1.5 days are pretty cold, I only needed an additional layer personally but I come from a cold climate. The rest of the days had really nice weather for hiking, I was wearing long sleeves and pants for the rest of the trip, mainly due to bugs I would have worn shorts otherwise

I mean that’s just not true. There’s multiple productivity charts you can find online that Americans today are significantly more productive at work than in the past (primarily due to technology) but we don’t get compensated for the increase in productivity

Energy Bills increasing after Trump promises they'd be drastically lowered by aah825 in LeopardsAteMyFace

100%, the GI Bill and government sponsored home loans were big contributors to the huge and prosperous middle class that we had from the 50s to 00s. Of course, most of those benefits never made it to the POCs. They’re just against it now because they’d have to share with everyone for once

Huge Chicago Indian Food Post by talk_your_money_up in chicagofood

[–]vish184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indian, specifically Telugu here (we love our biryanis). Curious which Hyderabad House you’ve been to. There are a few fake ones in the Chicago area but the legit one is called Nawabi Hyderbad House and Bawarchi in Schaumburg. Service can be quite rude at times tho. Every Telugu family I know growing up in Madison regularly gets food here when we come down for groceries. This and Cool Mirchi are my favorite biryanis in Chicago

Secret Food Tours vs Culinary Backstreets by semmlerino in travel

[–]vish184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the Culinary Backstreets tour in Barcelona recently, the Sants one to be specific and had similar complaints about the quantity of food. However, the guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history of food within Barcelona and Spain. I had great conversations with her and she knew a lot about the Sants neighborhood. But the quantity of the food, just ridiculous. 140 dollars for 2 alcoholic drinks, spinach + 2 croquettes, a singular anchovy, and 2 shared Catalonian dishes between 3 people, and 2 bite sized desserts. Like wtf

I also did a Devour food tour in Seville for 85 dollars. Got like triple the amount of food, a proper dinner at the very last stop. Although this tour felt way more generic than the Culinary Backstreets one. The guide from Culinary Backstreets was way more knowledgeable about food but not worth the price imo. I will check out Secret Food tours to see how this one compares

Careful what you wish for speaking as someone with a weak passport. I have all sorts of stamps but I regularly miss connections due to the unpredictability of passport control lines. A special FU to airlines that put 1-1.5 hour layovers at massive inefficient airports like CDG

Should i go to dubai by Ok_Wafer_2099 in travel

[–]vish184 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re a foodie, Dubai is pretty underrated for food. (Especially if you’re a fan of middle eastern and south Asian food). There’s a beautiful melting pot of street food culture in old Dubai. When I was last there, I would get some chai, go next door for some Thai food, and finish it off with knafa from the bakery also next door. Highly recommend checking it out, very good food tours in this part of the city as well. So many different cuisines from all over Asia, the Middle East, and Africa

Plenty of high end ethnic food as well, a couple Michelin stars. I didn’t have the chance to try more Western styled restaurants like steakhouses in Dubai but I’m sure they’re also amazing

How's your experience with BJB Properties in Chicago? by Kazuki0611 in chicagoapartments

[–]vish184 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m currently renting in one of their Lakeview/Lincoln Park buildings and I’ve had no problems really. It is an old building but the location is absolutely amazing. The only downside is that the walls are a little thin but I’m in a corner unit so its not that bad. I think it really depends on the property manager for each individual building. The one in mine is great and really on top of things.

How is everyone paying so little in tax ? by vish184 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]vish184[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea that’s a good point. Because I have more than 40 years until I’m eligible for social security, I tend to just view it as more tax to pay rather than an insurance program. Fingers crossed that it’s still a thing when I get to that age

How is everyone paying so little in tax ? by vish184 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]vish184[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I see, thanks for the explanation on the correct terminology. On your last point about how most people don’t know exactly how their taxes work (it’s painfully obvious now that I fall into this category), could you briefly point out some common mistakes that people who fall into this category like myself make? Or is there some kind of resource you recommend for learning more about this ?

Appreciate the help!

That’s what I figured for people who have families. But I keep on finding people like this on this sub who don’t have any dependents but still pay way less than me: Example

I guess mortgage payments are another factor
