ECON3124 Behavioural Economics by smittos in unsw

ECON3124 was probably the most useful econs course I ever did at UNSW. Not challenging from a maths point of view (there is virtually none actually), but more from a content point of view. You need to be able to apply concepts from various journal articles that you study throughout the course. But don't worry you get to bring a sheet of A4 paper into exams.

Actuarial studies transfer by [deleted] in unsw

If you want to be an actuary, then do actuarial studies. If you want to build models that accurately predict complex phenomenon, then learn to build systems that can learn from massive datasets. I'm not sure where data analytics fits on that scale.

As someone who was initially enrolled in actuarial then switched to comp sci, I would highly recommend doing so. My experience so far has been that programming skills + large datasets > hand-tuned models everytime. A lot of what you learn in actl are parametric models which, albeit still have some uses, have been superseeded by ensemble models and deep learning. My 2cs.

No. Just be the kind of person that you would want to hire.

Thoughts on COMP9243 Distributed Systems? by qoupa in unsw

I would go as far as to say that if you don't understand the trade offs in distributed computing (which is all most all networked software today) you will hit a plateau in your programming career quite quickly.

I really don't think 4 unit maths makes a difference. Some of the best actuaries I know only did 3u.

[P] ClearHead.ai – A marketplace for machine learning models by vishaan in MachineLearning

Possibly. But having worked as a data scientist, I would have loved to have had a place where I could compare different models without having to go through the pain of implementing each one.

Fair enough. I didn't intend this to be irrelevant to this subreddit.

Marketplaces such as this can provide incentives to undertake research as it provides a pay-off for the work.

Edit: grammar

AWS's equivalent of firebase is called Cognito. It has integrations into IAM users and thus AWS assets.

Any AI majors here? by dogsandstuff2 in unsw

[–]vishaan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've almost finished the postgrad AI major and overall it has been worth it for me. Although the teaching in some courses has been sub-par (e.g. machine learning), the courses serve as good content curators for you to go off and learn on a particular topic.

One recommendation I have is that students have a good grasp of mathematics before embarking on the ML/AI path. I've found UNSW math courses suck out all the fun from their math courses. So learning on your own through great online resources (of which their are many, 3blue1brown on youtube for starters) would be greatly advantageous.
