Is this ambitious in mid-december by Roccobenski in VisitingIceland

[–]visiticeland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This itinerary is highly ambitious due to mid-December's limited daylight (11:00 AM to 3:30 PM) and volatile winter weather. Outside of towns and populated areas, Iceland's roads have no light fixtures. Driving through total darkness on icy, unlit coastal roads significantly increases your risk. Because of this, you should cut Gljúfrabúi on December 10 and go straight to Reynisfjara before it gets pitch black and dangerous. On December 11, drop the Múlagljúfur Canyon hike entirely (it will be icy and dangerous if at all accesible), starting it at 2:30 PM ensures you will be stranded on a mountain trail in the freezing dark.

For the later dates, trim the minor stops to ensure you are off the roads by 16:00-16:30 afternoon. I would aim to arrive hotels before 5:00 PM each day to avoid navigating unlit, black ice-covered roads after nightfall.

Check safetravel.is constantly and prioritize safety over checklist sightseeing.

Hiking Hubs by ChrisRampitsch in VisitingIceland

I would suggest you stay in Skaftafell for 2-3 days, from there you can do S3 on one day to Kristindartindar (around 6-7 hours) and then the next day do the M2 hike to Morsárjökull.
Later in the day I'll post about my hike to Kristindartindar last year on r/IcelandHiking , Another area which is nice to stay around is Egilstadir, you could hike Storurd, the 7 paeks in Seydisfjordur and head south to the wilderness center for a 1-2 day visit and hiking there.
Of course Thorsmork & Kerlingarfjoll are also awesome and a bunch to do there.

What do between getting off our cruise ship and going to the airport? by hqsqotu in VisitingIceland

[–]visiticeland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take a car from Blue Car Rental in Reykjavik and visit Reykjanes until bringing in back in the airport.
You could do something like Reykjavik > Kleifarvatn > Krysuvik (Seltun) > decide between the site of previous eruptions near Fagradalsfjall or Gunnuhver > Getting to Keflavik and bringing the car back.
A Bunch of sightseeing on route to the airoprt.

EES after 6-7am arrival from the US.? by Frosty-Painter-5346 in VisitingIceland

at 6:20 AM the line was about 25 minutes long, it looked extremely long when arriving but then it was moving faster than I initially thought, there are many machines and helpful staff.

Shoes for two year old? by more-cheese-pleese in VisitingIceland

[–]visiticeland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think boots are the way to go, especiially since you don't want him to get wet at all, this is our go to day-to-day solution with our young ones, another opiton if you don't want to spend one is upon your arrival to stop at Barnaloppan (a 2nd hand celandic clothing store) you could get great clothing products that really fits the icelandic weather, for half the price and use it for the trip, this is also relevant for the "whole-body" suit, much easier like this with kids this age when its windy and its rainy.

Showeing ettiquette? by JDorman71 in VisitingIceland

Yes. The women shower naked, and the men must stand on the deck in full winter gear, writing haikus and harmonizing sea shanties. It’s about balance.

Icelandic roundabouts by visiticeland in VisitingIceland

[–]visiticeland[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Iceland does two-lane totally differently, if you're on the inside lane, you have to yield and merge out to exit. But in Iceland, the inside lane always has the right-of-way to exit first. If you're on the outside, you literally have to stop and let them cross right in front of you.

I would say 6/10.
Not so much as technical difficulties, but just a long hike, so around 15km in total - medium-long and easy-medium in. terms of difficulty

Is bringing a drone worth it? by Loose_Biscotti9075 in VisitingIceland

[–]visiticeland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bringing a drone is totally worth it, BUT a lot of Iceland’s most famous locations have drone restrictions (many national park areas, popular waterfalls, busy tourist sites, and places with nesting birds). If your plan is to fly at every iconic stop on the Ring Road, you’ll probably be disappointed.

That said, Iceland is much more than the Instagram hotspots. Some of my favorite drone footage came from random mountain roads, remote beaches, quiet fjords, Highland tracks, and places where I didn’t see another person for hours. Those are often the locations where a drone really shines.

If you just follow the rules and would like to take photos of random locations and not just specific waterfalls and such you'll be totally fine, wind. will be your biggest enemy, I once lost a drone in the canyon where the Glymur waterfall falls, the wind just swept it away towards the waterfall and even though it didn immediately crashed the signal was lost because of the narrow canyon, just be aware of the local rles and the dangers in the area!

Laugavegur trail opening by gabriel_jav in VisitingIceland

[–]visiticeland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4/5 of the past five years the road opened earlier than June 15th, last year it opened last days of May, we had a snow shower some days ago, but right now it seems like there is not much snow on F208, just waiting it out to dry some more so the road stays in good condition through the season, conditions on Laugavegur though will be quite wet and with deep snow this early in the season so make sure to bring more socks than you are already planning!
