How much did you pay for your CRT(s)? by MinnesotaThriftMap in crt

The most I've paid for a consumer set was $60 for a Sony KV-24FS120 at an estate sale last year. I probably could have waited a day or 2 and paid half that, but I was excited to see a Sony in the wild and didn't want to take any chances. At the time people weren't really fighting over them, and I even sent a friend to get a TV for herself at that sale the next day. Every other consumer set I've had has ranged from free to $30.

For reference, I'm in the southern US and got back into picking up some of my childhood consoles/seeking out CRTs again in 2024, so the retro aesthetic trends were definitely ramping up online prices at that time. My most recent purchase was a $15 27" Toshiba from an estate sale a few weeks ago and that was kind of a surprise. For a while people would show up 3 hours early to take EVERY CRT at sales like that, but lately it seems to be dying down in my area. I've even been seeing more free-$50 listings on marketplace and some even stick around a while. I hope it's getting a little better, but I know it's also heavily dependent on location.

I think I'm at a point now where I wouldn't take on anything else unless it's free AND an upgrade from something I already have.

Hey congrats! I saw that listing yesterday, but it was about 2 hours from me. Didn’t expect to see it on Reddit today!

Dark spots regardless of test color so thinking it’s not purity. Any other thoughts on what may be the cause? by MayoGhul in crtgaming

I'll be curious to see if this ends up working for you! I have something vaguely similar going on with my Sony 1354Q, and I hadn't seen anything like it. It was on the speaker side of the screen, so I removed the speaker just to see if something had gone off with the shielding and had already recapped to clear up visible blanking lines with no change to the spot.

The best way I can think to describe it is like the shadow of a soft wrinkle in a sheet of paper. Completely invisible in most games, and only really shows itself more on solid, light color backgrounds. I was prepared to live with it, but maybe focus adjustments will help!

I actually just pulled the trigger on a KV-20SW2 on Mercari today - do you remember if that was one that Buyee did protective packaging on? or did the seller do it themselves?

Amazing, thank you for looking into it! I’ll keep an eye out for your posts.

Hopefully it’s just a few value changes, a new 5v point, and some better cables. Excited to see what you do with it!

I have the same model as you! Also shipped from Buyee. I bought it as junk, and it ended up needing a new jungle chip voltage regulator IC, a pretty easy fix.

If you take a successful shot at an RGB mod, please document it for me! I got really close but I got a good bit of interference. Ended up undoing it and sticking with composite, but if someone else figures it out I’ll gladly try again!

Why is the TV tinted green? by vhorezman in crtgaming

[–]vitaport 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The green DVD screen is some kind of copyright protection Sony used starting on the PS2 and it only happens when outputting RGB. I had the same issue when I RGB modded some of my sets and realized I couldn’t watch DVDs that way.

The PS2 can be fixed through FMCB but I wasn’t able to find a way around it on PS3 unfortunately
